“I love you. And I’m not going to lose you too!” – Jenna Ryan
There are times when a military romance story makes you swoon and takes you through an amazing adventure. And then, there are times – albeit, few and far between – that you find something missing from the book – but you still wish to see the rest of the series, because you’re intrigued.
This is one of those very rare cases.
Jenna Ryan is a woman who tries really hard not to get in bed with her dead brother’s best friend after he comes back from enlistment. Mick Fury is a playboy, and she’s not going to be another of his conquests. But danger puts them together in close proximity soon and often – and they will have to trust each other in order to make it out alive.
OK, first, let me just say, the plot and the concept were pretty good. We had to do with corrupt people in authority positions, and while that’s nothing new, the interesting part was that both Mick and Jenna’s brother were not exactly innocent, just had a change of heart. The pace was a bit slow at first, but thankfully started picking up speed after the first half of the book.
What really bummed me in this story was the female lead – wow, what a surprise that such a line comes from me… I know, I know, I’m biased, I’m rarely satisfied with most female leads – but, hear me out.
Jenna had the audacity to use Mick, and play with his feelings, and then actually accused him! Like, what happened between them was him taking advantage and it was his fault! Never mind the fact the guy was so glaringly obvious in his attraction towards her. I’m dense, but even I would have figured it out, especially with all these years of history! And, not to be the anti-feminist here, but why do women insist that just because a man hasn’t had a steady relationship yet – which could be due to a million of reasons, none of them necessarily being that the guy is a born heartbreaker, as proven in Mick’s case – he won’t mind having his heart broken? Ladies, they, too, have feelings, unless they have personally cheated on you and have deliberately hurt you, taking your womanly issues out on a guy is NOT. OKAY!
Also, Tara was annoying as hell! I mean, really, sweetheart? How stupid can you be? OK, sure, it worked out in the end, but what would she have done if Collin didn’t end up falling in love with her?
The only characters that I liked – again, what a surprise – were Mick – and Dan! Since Dan is in the next book, I’m not gonna get further into my fangirling, but Mick… Phew, the guy was awesome! He had his flaws – and believe me, he had lots of those, he was no perfect prince – but it was hard to judge him for that. One, he was working to make up for his mistakes. Two, he was desperately trying to respect the woldwide-famous, non-spoken rule: “No fraternizing with my bestie’s sister” – even if he was head over heels for her. And three, he was willing to risk his life, career, and anything really, as long as those he loved were safe and happy. Case in point, all those things he did for Jenna no matter how many times she used him and threw him aside (or that “let’s seduce Mick to get info out him” scene that sealed the deal for me hating her), and the fact he gave up his dream, so that his little brother could have his own. I totally got the man – I’m like that with my own little brothers – and it made me respect him so much more as a person.
That being said, I can’t wait to keep up with this series. Sure, Jenna was not a personal favorite, and the pace needed a little work, but the characters that are sure to follow in the next books seem promising, and the concept is, again, not that bad.
