This little story is packed with humor, charm, and an intelligent protagonist who finds themselves caught up in an implausible yet strangely logical adventure. The writing style is witty, with a delightful under-statedness that adds to the absurdity of the story, making it all the more endearing. Jules is a sharp and slightly skeptical protagonist that navigates the bizarre events with a dry sense of humor, creating a delightful balance between the silliness of the plot and the sharpness of her observations. It's a fun, unexpected journey that proves sometimes the most ridiculous adventures are the most entertaining.

This was a strange little book. I did not care for Pinkwater's writing style - it's quite choppy, and almost sarcastic. The girl, Jules, is quite sure of what she wants, and accepts the magical without question. and is aided by her like-minded aunt. The mystery they have to solve is simple and is taken care of with little need for much perseverance or growth.
I wanted to love the book because of the collie...but I wouldn't recommend it.

Quick quick read and so much fun. I learned about roosters and that they don't know consonants. Magical worlds and all that fun. Go for it.

Daniel Pinkwater has been creating amazing stories for a very long time. In this hilarious little book, Jules wins a collie by writing a letter and it leads her to amazing adventures with a rooster, a witch, and other amusing characters. The family is warm and real, and Jules reminds them that they've been promising her a dog for a long time. Penny and Jules immediately bond, and hopefully they will continue to have interesting adventures.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
