I really enjoyed this book. Endless twists and turns until the very end. At first, it was kind of annoying, you'd think one thing was happening and then find out its something else. But then I kind of stepped into the flow of the story and started to enjoy the flips and flops around. Overall, I would still recommend it to others.

I tried to get into this one after reading some positive reviews, but the writing was very disjointed and almost as if it had been written in chunks with large periods of time in between. There was little flow between pages and characters had no chemistry.

Thanks to @berkleypub and @berkleyromance for the gifted e-ARC and to @prhaudio for the ALC!

It took me a long time to understand what was happening in this book! Which was intentional. Are both MCs serial killers? What are they hiding? I kept forming theories and then discarding them and forming new ones. So many theories! And yet I found the characters likable and the ridiculous situations they got into made me laugh.

Both narrators did an excellent job with the dual POVs, and both voiced all the side characters well. It was an excellent listen.

I feel like if I share anything else I’ll end up giving spoilers. So I’ll just say it was a fun and amusing ride. Definitely worth the read.

DNF @ 30%

Although this premise was fun, I found the conversations and banter between the two main characters a bit cringy. Although I can tell that the chemistry between these two is very good, I just didn't connect with them.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review

This book was absolutely unhinged in the BEST possible way. Dolores and Jake were so much fun to read. The banter was 🔥🔥🔥 the snark these two traded back and forth was amazing. I also really appreciated that there was a deeper more emotional arc for each character that really paid off in the end.

I definitely recommend this one for the true crime fans, and those who love an angsty romance!

A huge thank you to @berkleyromance and @netgalley for an advanced copy of this one! I enjoyed it so much!!

Serial Killer Games by Kate Posey is a unique and fun read that kept me coming back for more.

This is definitely a unique book. There is mystery, murder, investigating, romance, dark humor, banter, and notes of a promising future and ending.

The author did a great job trying to weave all of these threads together into a witty, engaging, and quick read. The characters had banter, a bit of chemistry, and the way the plot was presented left me wanting to continue so that I could figure out what the author was planning to do and where this was going.

I will definitely read what this author writes in the future.

Painful to read

I hate leaving negative reviews for books because I know the author puts so much into them. But I really did not like this book. I stayed through until the end, but it was honestly painful to read.

The twists were so abrupt I have whiplash, and the problems all seemed to dissolve tidily to make things nice and neat in the end.

I found the characters unlikable and over the top. I finished it so I could give a fair review, but it was hard.

this was so good! It's one of my favorites this year. I loved every second of this.
It felt like I was on a twisty roller coaster. I didn't see things coming, and when they did, I wondered how I missed it. this was unique. I can't wait to read more from this author

This is disappointing, because I was genuinely looking forward to this book. I mean, the title alone peaked my interest, and the synopsis finished luring me in. The potential was definitely there; sadly, it didn't land for me.

I was vibing with this book from the quirky main characters and banter, even though I was slightly confused on what was happening. But once I reached 26%, I quickly lost interest.

Again, it had the potential, but it just didn't grab my attention long enough to see it through.

Serial Killer Games is both dark and funny in such a strange way. Its sorta romantic. The romance is laced with lots of innuendo initially before they finally take the plunge. But then there is also this Dexter-like vibe... I think the romance made me feel the way the romance did in Dexter-weird.

I appreciated the dark humor and vibes. I'm kind of morbid like that. But the tone changes about half way through the book and I didn't like it as much. I can't even really put my finger on why. Maybe once the secrets were out and there was no more awkward dark humor? There should be every reason I loved this book. It totally fits me. I didn't hate it! It just swerved off the mark. I'm not even sure how to categorize Serial Killer Games for comparison!

Delores and Jake are two dark, lonely people who meet at work through their macabre love of serial killers. They joke, they flirt, they slowly invade each other’s lives. What starts out as a serial killer thriller turns into real feelings—on the reader’s part. These people really grew on me. They have such heavy burdens that they cover up with jokes but the more that’s revealed, the more real they become. I loved it. I especially liked the witty banter in the way they flirt and the character building that evolved throughout the story. My favorite book of the month.

I really wanted to like this book so much. The concept was interesting, but I just couldn’t get into the book. There was so much confusion for me. It was dual POV, but I had to keep going back to check to see whose chapter it was because the wording made me confused. I had no issues with the dark humor and all. Everything just felt out of place.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy in exchange for a review.

So when you think you know what’s going on, no… you don’t 🤣 I loved the humor in this book, and even though I was thrown off I loved the flow of the story. Dodi and Jacob were both very likable characters for me. This is the first ARC I’ve read that I actually can’t wait for it to be released!

Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for this ARC.

Full disclosure, I picked this book up so many times and put it down. I was really confused and I was terrified to read actual serial killer things. Finally, I just told myself to sit down and give this a try, so I did. Y'know when people tell you to go into a book or a movie blind because it's so much better that way? I hate those people. I have no patience for those people. However, I'm going to be one of those dreaded people and tell you, "go into this book book." It really does make it so so so much more fabulous! I still maintain that the beginning of the story confused me but I can tell the author was wanting to have fun with the reader. And after a few chapters when the whole thing begins to come together-oh man, it is so worth it! So much heart and love! And the side characters!!!! It was absolutely unputdownable!!

Thank you too Netgalley and Berkeley for an ARC of this book. I loved it!

Thank you NetGalley and Berkeley Publishing for this digital ARC.

Working in a large corporation can be monotonous… that is, until Dolores “Dodi” dela Cruz locks eyes with the new temp in a crowded elevator. His too-toothy, handsome smile and generic “Office” Ken uniform piqued her curiosity. And not because he’s easy on the eyes…Dodi knows there are serial killers amongst us, and she’s listened to enough true crime to be pretty sure she spotted one (finally!) in the wild.

Jake Ripper likes to keep a low profile, and after spending years keeping everyone he knows at arm's length, he might have finally met his match. Someone who can see him, she even seems to find the humor in his macabre games. In fact, Dodi needs his help with a body…

I knew I would enjoy this book by Kate Posey.
Dark humor? Check.
Slow-burn romance? Check.
Witty banter? Check.
Suspense? Check.
I was completely surprised by the emotional impact and how deeply touched I felt by the storyline Posey expertly laid out. There is so much more built into this book than what is on the surface. I knew I would laugh, and I did, but I also cried and was overcome with sweeping moments of hope. Whenever I thought I knew what kind of book this was, my notions were flipped on their head, to be something else entirely. I loved that the twists and turns coming weren’t spelled out for me, and when they were revealed, I could call back to every small moment that foreshadowed the conclusion. I love it and I’m excited to read more from Kate Posey.

Imagine, if you will, a post-pandemic office sitch.

Employees given the all-clear, report-back-to-base instructions... meaning, anyone still wishing to be gainfully-employed should showing up at the big office building, posthaste, to do... well, Very Important Things.

Which Dolores de la Cruz—striking, enigmatic, and fearsome—does, in her oh-so-elite, can’t-touch-this way.

And that's all fine... until she happens into the same elevator at work as Jake Ripper... almost ridiculously-handsome, in his winsome, Clark Kent sorta way—and suddenly, both their worlds are turned upside-down (and quite possibly, inside-out).

Because whereas Dolores is the scarily-beautiful (and untouchable, lest we forget), powerful unknown... Jake is the younger, eager-to-please, temp-agency hire—just there for a brief time, filling in for someone-or-other—with no real skin in any particular game.

Except.

Dolores senses in Jake an “otherness”, with his stranger-danger leather gloves, ridiculously-good looks, and “oh, shucks” charm... the perfect persona, in other words, to embody the serial killer who’s been plaguing their city for the past few years.

As for Jake, well... he’s been temping for years, just looking (hoping? praying??) to run across someone interesting enough to capture his attention, his hopes, his... dreams.

Someone who could see through his boring, smiling persona... to the real him beneath the surface.

The dangerous him. The one who would do anything...

Like... get rid of a body(!), if the right person asked.

Oh, my. (And, oh, yes, please!)

It’s Kate Posey’s debut(!) novel, Serial Killer Games...

So, first off, let me say... I can’t say much about this book.

Nope, can’t do it. [Sorry, but to say much would be to say TOO much.]

So let me do it this way.

At first, it felt as though I were on the path... and once onboard, I was all in. Good to go.

But then... the author veered off down a trail I didn’t even see coming.

And we went hard. Fast. All in.

And, to my surprise, I was one-thousand times more hooked than I’d already been.

[Okay, IKR? Crazy. But that’s what happened!!]

Serial Killer Games seriously had me fully-believing and invested in one thing... then did a complete 180, leaving me struggling to catch up.

But once I did? Holy cow, what a ride..!

So. To say that Serial Killer Games surprised me, would be... an understatement. (Like, SRSLY.)

You already know (if you follow me) I’m not going to give you ANY spoilers.

But... let me say that this is absolutely a book that you need to stick with... because when the “flip” comes? The twist, that thing you didn’t see coming?

It’ll rock your world... but that’s only the start, because this one is like a curled ribbon that keeps unfurling and unwinding, twist after twist.

And where it lands? Well, that’s a real MOMENT, that is.

[If you’re thinking tears and sniffles and such, you’re not off-base. There were more than a few of those moments.]

Perhaps the best way to express the depth of my feels for this book is this: I put SO MANY bookmarks in parts I want to revisit (share, etc.), within it.

Because there were that many moments which touched my soul, my experience, my life.

Kate Posey has done something incredibly special, in her debut, Serial Killer Games. And me? I truly cannot wait to see what magic she next pulls out of her literary hat.

As for this one? Please, please give it a read. It's positively something special.

What are the chances that two serial killers show up in the same office?

Temp worker Jake Ripper first noticed her in the elevator. She dressed all in black and kept to herself, using her phone as a sword to keep others at arm’s length. She doesn’t say much, doesn’t seem to have any friends at work, and doesn’t seem to miss a trick. Jake is intrigued, but he can’t help but wonder if she’s a killer.

Dolores dela Cruz is interested in killers. She listens to a true crime podcast and stays on high alert. So when the new temp started at work, she immediately wondered if he was a serial killer. He has those classic good looks, but dresses in beige, like he’s trying not to stand out at all. And when he follows her in the parking garage one night, she teases him about the body in the truck of his car.

Jake liked teasing Dolores about her interest in killers, but he was glad she hadn’t insisted on seeing in his trunk. But as the teasing goes on, the light back and forth, the flirting that turns to friendship, both Jake and Dodi (as he comes to call her) realize that their killer games may be hiding something more serious. So she helps him hide a body, and then he returns the favor, in their way.

But their flirtations hide deeper issues, and their new relationship can help with some but not all of their individual problems. But then it turns out that there really is a serial killer operating in the area, sending office workers off the top of buildings, and getting the pet name Paper Pusher. Could it be Jake? Could if be Dolores? Or is it someone else, who might be targeting them as their next victim?

Serial Killer Games is a clever rom com about complicated people who may or not be killers. Told in alternating viewpoints, this book is filled with secrets and twists that take readers to unusual and unexpected places. This is a slow burn romance, with serial killer based flirting, perfect for fans of true crime podcasts and documentaries, with lots of clever dialogue and a slow heat.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this one, but I was drawn in immediately as Jake and Dolores felt each other out at work, trying to figure out who the other person was. And once we got a little further in, and saw more of what was happening in their lives, the story drew me in so much more. The impromptu trip to Las Vegas, the fights with HR, school pickup, Christmas—all of it was funny and smart and surprisingly moving.

I think you have to be a true crime junkie to really get the humor of this book, but if you’re one of us, with the favorite Dateline host and documentary recommendations when you log into your favorite streaming service and a bunch of social media discussion groups about your true crime podcasts, then you’ll find this rom com clever and refreshing and all sorts of fun.

Egalleys for Serial Killer Games were provided by Berkley through NetGalley, with many thanks, but the opinions are mine.

With the popularity of true crime documentaries and podcasts over the last number of years, there’s been a fair share of novels that also feature protagonists with those interests but this book was such a unique take on that. The synopsis, while accurate, is not all that this story is about. It takes some turns, and not everything is as they may seem to be. The dark humour is quirky and twisted, where Dolores and Jake sort of gave me Parks & Rec April Ludgate and Dexter Morgan vibes.

Beyond the morbid jokes, there were deeper themes about grief and family - both found and by blood. It was in those moments that the characters broke through their hard exteriors that I actually preferred the latter half of the book more than any romantic interest building between the two leads. The feelings of grief take shape in many of the characters in different ways, whether grieving lost ones or perceived ideas of lost opportunities.

This book is at times a bit campy and at other times heartwarming. The premise of the book was what hooked me, but it was the rest of the story that actually reeled me in. Overall, I enjoyed this debut novel from a Canadian author!

Dolores dela Cruz is fascinated by true crime and serial killers. She fantasizes about spotting a real one in the wild. When she meets the new temp at work, Dolores is convinced he is a serial killer. Jake Ripper always flies under the radar. He likes to observe people and discover their dark secrets. He is intrigued by Dolores and her aloof persona. They start their own game of cat and mouse, which will end either in murder or HEA.

It took me a while to get into the book. The first half was a little slow. It wasn't easy to figure out what was going on at first. Innuendos and characters saying things that didn't mean what you'd think they meant made the story confusing. The second half was much more entertaining, and many parts made me laugh out loud. In the second half, we met some funny and quirky secondary characters who made the story more appealing. I can't say who these characters are because it would be spoilery.

I would give the first half three stars and the second half four stars. I am also not a true crime aficionado, so maybe that's why I wasn't completely enamored with the book. Overall, Serial Killer Games is a solid debut, a unique rom-com with much appeal.

Thank you to Berkley for my copy of SERIAL KILLER GAMES. This one is out April 29!

This one was a little too predictable and tied up with a bow for me. Something strange happened in the middle which turned me off and I just couldn't get back into it.
