This was really scary, and I wish I read the description before I read it. If you like books like Stephen King's Holly then this will be right up your alley. This story is a page turner and it kept me at the edge of my sit through the whole book. Don't read this before bedtime or at night, if you want to sleep. The story has a satisfying ending and the plot is excellent. I love all the non-psycho characters and I am glad that Sloan knew how to protect herself and that she found someone who she could share her life with and that gets her..

I wished I liked these types of stories but they're to much like real life psychos.

I want to thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of a book that gave me nightmares

Hidden Nature was an entertaining read. I enjoyed getting to know the main character, Sloan Cooper. as she recuperates from a near-death injury. Her parents and her sister, Drea, help her in her recovery. (This part of the book could actually stand alone as a women's fiction book of someone overcoming adversity while reconnecting with her roots with the help of family) At the same time, there is a parallel story about two brothers who are tired of the rat race of stressful jobs. They work together to fix up an old house and start a handyman business together. Sloan and Nash inevitably meet and eventually sparks fly.

The pace of this book is better suited for a romance novel, but moves a little slowly for a romantic suspense novel. I enjoyed the procedural aspects when we see Sloan on the job, but I didn't like the serial killer storyline at all. It felt realistic that Sloan would begin looking into this case of missing people while restless on her medical leave, but the whole premise was creepy. The villains of the story were weird and over-the-top and I didn't care for the chapters told from their points-of-view.

Some of the ending was predictable but the showdown with the killer had some surprises. Although this wasn't my favorite by Nora Roberts, there were parts of the book I really liked, so I'm glad I read it.

I received an advance review copy of this ebook from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

This story follows Natural Resources police officer Sloan Cooper from a terrifying gunshot wound and recovery to a fresh start on life when she buys a house in her hometown, finds companionship with a neighbor who is helping with some remodeling, and gets pulled into some mysterious cases of people who have seemingly disappeared into thin air. Sloan digs in and is determined to find any connection between the bizarre happenings.

Sloane Cooper is a detective and an intuitive woman who serves her profession well. When she is shot on duty, she ends up returning to her hometown of Heron’s Rest to recover and then takes a job there. Sloan’s independence and desire to do the best job possible made her relatable and realistic. The plot was moderately paced until near the end when the villains ramp up the action and their plans, so the action centered around Sloan picks up the pace, too. The plot is original but not very complicated. Sloane and her family interact well together, with compassion and understanding. When two newcomers arrive in town and end up being contractors, the romance begins and continues throughout the story. I enjoyed the way the romance unraveled slowly just at the suspense did. I must confess that I figured out what was going to happen after reading about a third of the book, so I was not surprised by the events that unfolded. Nevertheless, I liked how the author methodically set the stage for these events and carried them out flawlessly. I have read most of Nora Roberts’ books and was expecting a twist, but it was okay that it didn’t really happen for me since the plot itself was a compelling one that moved along well. With personable characters and an engaging plot, this is a book not to be missed by a master of the genre.

Hidden Nature is a standalone romantic suspense novel driven by a murder mystery, a sweet romance, and powerful characters. Sloan Cooper is a Natural Resources officer who was shot in a store robbery. Learning to take a slower pace after her recovery, Sloan meets the sexy Nash Littlefield, who he left Wall Street to pursue a career in carpentry. While slowly falling in love, Sloan also uncovers a string of missing persons cases where the only thing that the missing have in common are being resuscitated after near fatal accidents. Sloan begins the hunt for killers whose very list of victims her name could be on. A suspenseful, page turner, the story draws you in and the love story between Sloan and Nash gives you the warm fuzzies for a feel good mystery that makes you believe in HEAs once again. My voluntary, unbiased, and non-mandatory review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

This latest standalone romantic suspense had all the Nora Roberts signature trademarks: dog-loving protagonists, a badass FMC (in this case Sloan, a Natural Resources police officer), home renos and great side characters. Lots of personal growth for Sloan, the FMC who is recovering from being shot at a convenience store robbery and finds herself in the crosshairs of a (legit) crazy married serial killer couple who are tracking and murdering people who have been brought back to life after near death experiences. Entertaining but nothing super standout for me. Longtime Nora fans will definitely enjoy this one that was good on audio narrated by January LaVoy. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

(4.5 stars)
Nobody does romantic suspense like Nora Roberts does. She has a knack for creating lovable characters, terrific relationships, AND believable villains. It’s a potent combination.

In Hidden Nature, we have a female police officer with the Maryland Natural Resources Police (a real organization, BTW, so I learned something), Sloan Cooper. When she gets shot on the job, she returns home to rural western Maryland to recuperate, with her family’s help. We also have two brothers from New York City, who decide to move there and start a contracting business, giving up their parent-influenced previous careers, which they never really liked. So you have the setup for romance there. There was a lot of home renovation talk but it didn’t overwhelm the plot. And there are adorable dogs too. The descriptions of the landscape made me yearn to visit the area.

The villains are appropriately creepy and it was terrific to get parts of the book told from their perspective. I don’t want to say more about them.

I mainly listened to the audiobook version since January LaVoy is one of my favorite narrators, and it did not disappoint. I was amazed at all the different voices she did throughout the book.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of this book and to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.

Hidden Nature is an intriguing blend of romance and thriller, with a stronger emphasis on the thriller side. I found Sloan’s investigative approach fascinating, especially since the main case she focuses on isn’t even her official assignment. That fresh perspective made the story feel unique. Sloan’s character is very blunt—sometimes almost too much so. I kept expecting others to take offense, but it seemed like everyone just accepted her straightforwardness as part of who she is. Interestingly, the romance felt more centered on her sister’s relationship than Sloan’s own, which caught me off guard. It wasn’t necessarily a drawback, but it did shift the focus in unexpected ways, both in terms of the romance and the thriller plot.

The book also features a lot of design and home improvement details, which I loved since it’s an interest of mine. However, I can see how that might slow the pace for readers less into those topics. Overall, though, Hidden Nature was a distinctive and enjoyable read.

Hidden Nature by Nora Roberts has Natural Resources police officer, Sloan Cooper safely returning from a dangerous arrest only to be nearly killed in a convenience store robbery. This is one tough woman who does the even while recovering she hears of a woman vanishing, she begins to investigate and is doing what she does best going after criminals.

This is a gritty edgier main character than most of what I have read written by Nora Roberts. The dialogue is often choppy when her works usually flow so smoothly. Not sure why this is different from her norm unless the character called for it. This author writes in romance, suspenseful thrills and fantasy but none I have read are quite like this one.

Another great read from Nora Roberts, HIDDEN NATURE introduces us to a fascinating heroine who is dedicated to her job as a Natural Resources officer -- a cop who protects the environment including state parks, precious resources and the people who live, work and vacation in the outdoors.
Sloan Cooper is coming off duty from the harrowing take-down of three men who have been preying on hikers in her jurisdiction. Tired and ready to go home and relax, she and her partner stop at convenience store -- where she walks into an armed robbery in progress. The criminal shoots and nearly kills her -- a skilled surgeon is able to bring her back from the dead on the operating table. Now she needs all her grit to work her way back to her active, demanding life.
With her family behind her, Sloan begins the long road back to recovery. As she is pushing herself to regain her strength and resiliency, she is also building a new life in the small town where she grew up. She renews old acquaintances, enjoys being with her family -- and meets an interesting man who's given up his city life and come to her world to build a new business working with his hands.
Then she learns about a seemingly senseless kidnapping and murder -- one that she can't resist investigating. Finding other, similar crimes, she begins to look for a comprehensible reason for a series of murders.
Her investigation will lead her to discover the twisted motives arising from the bizarre beliefs of a common law couple. HIDDEN NATURE is another fantastic trip into Nora Roberts' creativity and unparalleled skill. Loved it -- highly recommended.

Hidden Nature is the latest book by prolific author Nora Roberts. I have read many, many Nora Roberts books and was excited to read this standalone mystery/romance, but it missed the mark for me.

For me, there were two main problems with this book. First, the dialogue between the characters, particularly between Clara and Sam, was unbelievable and cringeworthy. I had to skim through a lot of dialogue (again, mostly Clara and Sam) because I cound't stand it. Second, and more importantly, there is so much home renovation talk in this book! Nash and Theo are handymen. They are renovating their own home, plus homes belonging to others. Sloan is renovating her home, with the help of Nash, Theo, and her dad. Her family owns rental cabins and they do a log of, wait for it, renovation. I don't care about the paint colors in someone's kitchen. The bathroom renovation was not important to me. At least 30% of this book is home renovation, and it really took away from developing the actual plot and characters (see earlier complaint about Sam and Carla!).

I struggled to finish this book. It is easily my least favorite Nora Roberts book ever.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the publisher, the author, and Netgalley.

This book was so much more than I expected! It was an awesome thriller! It pulled me in and did not let go until I got to the end. Of course it was so well written. I have not read a lot of Nora Robert’s books, but the ones I have read have been excellent. I might pick this book for the library bookclub.

Fans of Roberts will be pleased with this latest that features an intrepid Natural Resources officer in Sloan. She's recovering from being shot when she identifies a series of missing women and sets out to get answers. There's a bit of romance, a bit of suspense, nice small town atmospherics. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read for the beach bag.

There is a reason Nora Roberts is so popular. She writes stories that are easy to read, and characters you want to know more about. This suspense/mystery/romance has so much going for it. The main characters are well defined, and grow as the story progresses. The side characters add flair and depth. The mystery is intriguing, and while you as the reader know who is the cause of the missing persons, it is fascinating to watch Sloan solve the problem. Also, the story's "bad guys" are a couple who truly creeped me out. They were so well described, and brought to life that it was difficult to read their sections of the book without feeling icky, and a bit of hatred towards them.

Sloan Cooper is pretty sure she has the worst luck, after being shot during a robbery the officer finds herself off the job recuperating and newly single, thanks to a boyfriend that dumped her while she was still recovering in the hospital. She's dying to find something to keep her mind off everything and find a way to fill all the free time she suddenly has... Then it happens, the biggest case of her career falls into her lap!

Hidden Nature is a gripping tale that will have your attention from the very first line! I loved this newest offering from Ms. Roberts it is by far one of my favorites from her to date. The characters were wonderfully crafted and easy to connect to and the story they had to share was utterly captivating! If you are a lover of romantic suspense then I highly encourage you to pick this one up... once you start reading you won't be able to stop!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

I will read/listen to anything written by this author and this one did not disappoint. I started this one in ebook and then was granted the audio and because I am a busy lady I started over with the audio and whoa did I enjoy that! Sloan is a Natural Resource officer and after a long day she and her partner stop at a convenience store and when she goes in she walks right into a robbery and before she can pull her weapon she is shot multiple times. She is shocked back to life and her recovery is going to be a long one which requires her to leave her apartment in Annapolis and move back to Heron's Rest, her parents resort, to recover. Not one to lounge, she takes her recovery serious and pushes herself. When an opportunity arises for her to change her location and go to work there in the area that comes with a promotion.

Nash and Theo move to the area and set up a fix-it business all while fixing up their new home. When Nash meets Sloan to help her with her new home there is chemistry but it is a slow burn but the flames are there.

Sloan is also intrigued when she finds a "cold case" about a missing woman. When she finds another and then another there is a pattern. When the pattern turns out to include her, all because of her resurrection when she was shot the pattern is a little too close.

Definitely recommend this one in both forms but the narrator is the BEST!
