This is an excellent guide to growing your own herbs. It includes information on medicinal uses for the herbs as well as recipes for various herbal remedies you can make with them. What’s unique about this book over other herbal guides that I’ve read is that it is split up into which season the herbs are best to use in.
This guide is very easy to digest, with information broken down into smaller sections like medicinal use, ways to prepare it, and how to grow and harvest them. There are also lots of pictures of the plants and some of the recipes as well. It is perfect for beginners!

This was a good introductory book on herbs. I did find a few new uses for the herbs growing in my garden. I do wish a bit more growing information had been included. The seasons the herbs were in do not necessarily match the best growing season.

This is a great guide to get started in growing your own herbs and using them in different ways other than just in food. I have a lot of different herbs I grow but didn't realize the potential for using them in lotions or tinctures, etc.
I do struggle with growing some herbs (like chamomile) and this guide was helpful in explaining the best ways to take care of your herbs so that they thrive.
Would definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in getting more out of their herb garden.

Maybe the most useful herb gardening book I’ve ever read. Different seasons and different herbs. Super user friendly and great for new gardeners.

Everyone nowadays seems to have a few herbs in their gardens. Most of us, however don’t know much about them, other than what recipes to put them in. Most herb have both medicinal and culinary purposes, so many of us aren’t taking advantage of all of the uses of those herbs. Herbs in Every Season: 48 Edible and Medicinal Herbs for the Kitchen, Garden, and Apothecary is an excellent book that everyone who likes herbs should have on their bookshelf. Not only is the book beautiful and filled with professional, beautiful photographs of the herbs, but also includes recipes to use them in as well as medicinal uses and ways to use them in lotions and other beauty products.
The book is divided up into seasonal sections. Each section has information on growing and cultivating, as well as using them in gardens to make them beautiful. There are also good recipes that are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions which are easy to follow. The recipes include teas and tonics as well as sweets and breads.
All told, anyone who is wanting to start or expand an herb garden should definitely pick up this excellent primer. It will answer questions about anything you need to know about herbs.

A great guide. I'm a newbie to working herbs and this was perfect to get me started. It is packed with detailed plant profiles that were a great way to get me started because I didn’t know much at all. The book shows how we can use the herbs throughout the year.It included preservation techniques that are easy to follow and easy to understand.They also included some wonderful tasty recipes. Packed with information this is the guide everyone needs to get a start on their own beautiful herb garden.

This is such a helpful book and essential in every kitchen. Especially in this world where so many of us are trying to figure out how to grow food at home or how to incorporate more health conscious decisions. I loved the way the book was organized and very easy to understand. It is a one stop shop when it comes to everything herbs. The different ways to use herbs not just in cooking but in apothecary as well was enlightening. I've already taken the tips to start my own herb garden! 10/10 recommend.

This was one of the best herb books I've read. It is complete, each herb has it's history, it's apothecary use, culinary use and how to grow/harvest it with a couple recipes on each to get you started. The photos are beautiful and colorful. I ordered seeds, made some recipes and learned somethings about herbs I thought I already knew everything on. I recommend this book for anyone interested in fresh herbs. I hope the author writes another diving into more herbs/spices

Bevin Cohen's Herbs in Every Season is one of those books you will keep handy on your kitchen bookshelf.
(I would definitely love to have a hard copy of this excellent guide in my own library. With this colourfully illustrated book, you will learn to cultivate and consume the many common (and not so common!) herbs in Nature's bountiful garden.
This book discusses the medicinal as well as culinary uses for many of the herbs discussed in this excellent herbalists resource manual, As an added bonus, the author has a lyrical way with words. If his descriptions of the various herbs and their uses don't spellbind you, then his descriptive language may do the job!
This is a very well written and informative herbalists guide - suitable for apothecaries and amateur gardeners who might want, for example, to dabble with a rosemary/thyme hair tonic or a rose petal sunburn salve.

Such a lovely book - I enjoyed it so much! This book is divided into seasons (as a gardener, I love when a book is divided into seasons!). Each seasonal chapter has a short introduction followed by herbs that are best grown in that season. Each herb has a few pages dedicated to discussing "For the Apothecary, In the Kitchen, and Growing and Gathering. Each herb section also has recipes featuring each herb. The photographs are beautiful. I am a gardener and one of my goals this year is to grow more herbs. I preordered a hard copy after reading it, since I think it will make a great reference book as I make my own apothecary garden.

This book is great for beginners and more experienced people as well. It goes over 48 herbs, each one's culture/history, and its medical & culinary uses. There is a methodology section for preparation, that I found to be extremely usefull! There are recipes for medicinal salves, lotion, etc. and there are culinary recipes as well. I for one loved the chimichurri!
This is such a great book whether you are foraging for these herbs or growing your own! I wish I could find more of these in my area to forage!

This book provided very thorough information about herbs. I liked how recipes were provided for each of the herbs. The separation of herbs into seasons was helpful.

It highlights 48 common herbs that can be found or cultivated throughout the year, offering insights into their edible parts and how to prepare them for cooking or beverages. The book also includes a variety of recipes for personal care products, such as hair tonics, balms, and lotions, to edible recipes. Which adds a practical, hands-on element to the learning experience.
One minor drawback is the lack of detailed guidance on plant identification across seasons. Since some herbs appear in multiple seasons, additional context on their evolving characteristics would have been helpful. However, the author does provide useful notes on invasive species, which is valuable for those planning a garden or foraging responsibly.

Herbs in Every Season is a well written, graphically appealing, easy to understand and use herbal with info curated and arranged by Bevin Cohen. Due out 25th March 2025 from Hachette on their Timber Press imprint, it's 252 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
Arranged by seasons, it features herbs when they're each at their prime, with profiles, uses, recipes, culture & harvesting info, botanical name and history. Each profile includes lots of clear color photos (including the products made from the herbs). Recipe ingredients (other than the botanicals themselves) will be mostly readily available at coops/health food stores/international groceries in most of North America.
Recipe ingredients are in a bullet list, followed by step by step crafting/cooking instructions. Ingredient measures are given in imperial (American) units. There's a good mix of herbal recipes including teas, salves, balms, lotions, infusions, and fire cider.
Four and a half stars. Well written, accessible, beautifully photographed, and full of good usable recipes. It would be a good choice for public library acquisition, home library, smallholder/homesteader, community or allotment gardening groups, etc.

This book covers all the basics for beginner herbalist: history and culture, medicinal and culinary uses, planting and harvesting. It also covers methods for preparing teas, ointments, infusions and dozens of culinary recipes. It features some are your most common herbs like sage, rosemary and thyme and others that you perhaps haven't thought of growing. Overall, it's a great place to begin your herbalism journey, and nice to have as a quick reference, and it's not super overwhelming because it's broken up by what to focus on each season.
I love herbs, they are so much more forgiving than my garden, and there's something so peaceful about growing them yourself. The author said it best, “Even the act of growing herbs or gathering herbs is medicine for our body and spirit.”

I really enjoyed *Herbs in Every Season* by Bevin Cohen! It’s such a beautiful and practical guide to 48 different herbs, breaking them down by season with tips on growing, foraging, and using them. There are some great recipes—both for cooking and herbal remedies—and the photography is gorgeous. I love how it makes herbalism feel approachable, especially for beginners like me. That said, I did wish for a bit more detail in some places, like with horsetail, since not all varieties are the same medicinally. But overall, it’s a super useful book, whether you're just getting into herbs or have been growing them for years. Definitely one I’m happy to have on my shelf!
