The Second Deadly Sin The Arctic Murders by Asa Larsson

389 Pages
Publisher: Quercus Books (US), MacLehose Press
Release Date: August 12, 2014

Fiction, Murder, Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Police Procedural, International, Sweden

Two bear hunters come across a grizzly discovery. They find a brutally murdered woman with the word “whore” written in her own blood. No one knows where the woman’s grandson is. Prosecutor Rebecka Martinsson and police detective Anna Maria Mella send out the police dog hander, Krister Ericson, out to find him. The story bounces back and forth from the present to 1910s with the arrival of Elina Petterson, the young schoolteacher hired to teach for the coal miners’ children.

The two different story lines intertwine and have a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. This is the fifth book in the series, and I recommend you read them in order so you know the characters’ history. If you like Steig Larsson, you will enjoy reading this book.

Started off quite a mystery. A human hand is discovered in a bear that was killed. A missing girl and the main suspect cannot be found. But then the story flattened out and there were some parts that I found to be very cruel. Not my kind of book.

This is the first book in the series that I have read but I will now be starting at the beginning. The plot was very compelling and kept me turning pages
Many thanks to Quercus Books and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Apparently I was approved to read this book back in 2014 and somehow missed it.

I decided to go back and read it and am glad I did. I love Nordic Noir/Scandinavian Mysteries and besides Jo Nesbo and Camilla Laackberg I really wasn’t familiar with any other authors.

This book is book 5 in the Rebecka Martinsson series and I have not read the previous books however this book is fine to read as a stand-alone. The writing was excellent and the story was intriguing albeit a bit graphic in places. The characters are well developed and interesting. You want to continue reading about them and knowing more.

The story itself was gripping and I found it hard to put down at times. Really good book. Definitely 5 stars.

I received a free copy from NetGalley. This is the 5th in the series but I had no trouble reading it without having read the others. Murder mysteries that spread across generations, the setting made for a interesting read.

This author's talent for describing the landscape is formidable. Although I found the story, the details and the author's perspective darker than I enjoy, the narrative was well done, and the stark setting the perfect backdrop. My curiosity was piqued, and I felt compelled to continue to the end.

This is the first Rebecka Martinsson book I've read and I wasn't disappointed in this Swedish mystery. Martinsson is a interesting character and having the protagonist be a prosecutor instead of a police office is a nice change.

Clever plot, good storytelling, enjoyable read. I enjoyed reading about an area of the world I have no experience with (Sweden, the wilderness).
