I can't help being OBSESSED with female main characters who are intent on getting murderous revenge on toxic/evil male side characters. This debut book by Emma C. Wells is a great addition to the new genre of feminist revenge fiction that has the protagonist killing “bad” men for the sake of the betterment of the female race. It was great as an audiobook and perfect for fans of books like How to kill men and get away with it by Katy Brent. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

Does a great job of flipping the serial killer genre on its head, This Girl’s a Killer brings a great new antiheroine into the world and it’s hard not to root for her as she brings justice to horrible men while dodging police and problems from her pharmaceutical sales job. Feminine rage is always something I’m going to want to read and this one does it very well.

I really enjoyed listening to Cordella through the lens of Stefanie Kay's phenomenal performance.

There is a serial killer FMC and the whole book kept me wanting more. It wasn't the most deep of books but I would not have liked it as much if it was. I was thoroughly entertained the whole time. Also, I love the idea of a friend that doesn't mind erasing someone from the world that preys on single mothers or other vulnerable women.

I was rooting for Cordella the whole time and I was very happy to have given this a listen!

💭What I thought would happen:

That title sold me. I don’t even need to know what’s inside. I’m on it. I dropped everything the second I got it!

📖What actually happens:

Cordelia kills men. The worst kind of men, ones who have committed heinous crimes and got away with it. When her bestie starts dating one of those awful men she must protect her but every step of the way goes up in flames….

🗯Thoughts/sassy musings:

Calling all fans of How To Kill Men & Get Away With It and Finlay Donovan (a darker/shadier version of Finlay) this one is for you!

Have you ever just thought Earl’s Gotta Die, then this is the book for you. Because let’s face it, some 🍆 are truly awful and just can’t be fixed 😂 that’s our main girl Cordelia's opinion. You go girl. The vigilante women need.

The way this book spirals out of control had my sphincter clenched hard for like 50% of the book. Like come on girl, fix your shit asap 😂🪦

Enjoyed it muchly but maybe that’s just my mindset with the current political climate right now 😑😑

This book had potential and all the comparisons to Finlay Donovan and Dexter convinced me to request this audiobook.

With stories that have morally gray main characters, it’s very important that they’re likable. Cordelia was not and annoyed me to bits. I didn’t really care for the story and I started to dissect all the things that irked me. It was very repetitive and took too long to get to the point. Unfortunate DNF 34% in.

Thank you to Dreamscape Media for the audiobook copy to review.

This Girl’s A Killer by Emma C. Wells

Thank you to @dreamscapemedia, @emma.c.wells.books, and @netgalley for the opportunity to read this #advancedreadercopy in exchange for my #honestbookreview! This book is out October 29.

If you are a fan of Dexter and/or the Finlay Donovan series, this book is right up your alley! Cordelia is living a double life - upstanding pharmaceutical sales rep by day, hunting and taking care of unscrupulous men by night - and even has the same kill room prep and similar practices as Dexter. The hi-jinx and close calls of this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this for someone looking for some lighthearted vigilante justice!

I listened to this via audiobook and it was sooo sooo good! I absolutely devoured this book. Cordelia was not what I suspected and there were various twists and turns that I did not see coming. You think you have the book pegged from the start but you would be wrong!

This is a difficult review for me because I really wanted to like this book. The premise of this book is great. Sort of Dexter meets Promising Young Woman. However, I found the fmc to be annoying and constantly complaining.

Cordelia is best friends with Diane, who has started dating a man that Cordelia really doesn’t trust,. She can’t kill him though, because she doesn’t think he is her usual “monster” victim and she only kills monsters. For a book about a murder where she spoke constantly about how she was a murderer, we didn’t see that until 50%ish through the book. I also just really got the feeling that she was in love with Diane and jealous of Simon, but I guess not? It really just felt like too much exposition and the characters were not enjoyable for me to read. I also felt that the ending was a bit abrupt.

The narrator did a phenomenal job though! I often have a hard time listening to women do men’s voices and vice versa, but she did a wonderful job!

Thank you NetGalley for the arc!

I never thought I would be rooting for a serial killer, but here we are! Cordelia is the new Dexter in town, making it her mission to rid the world of bad men. There were some laugh out loud moments, and Cordelia has got to be one of my favorite lead characters in a long time.

The narrator did an incredible job bringing the characters to life, giving each a distinct voice. She made the book entertaining and fun.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to listen!

The female Dexter, I was hooked from the very beginning! Such a good ending! They should turn this into a movie or series!

Publisher's summary
For listeners of Finlay Donovan is Killing It and The Bandit Queens comes a bright and biting thriller following Cordelia Black, a best friend, a businesswoman, and, in her spare time, a killer of bad men. Ask Cordelia Black why she did it. The answer will always be: he had it coming.
Cordelia Black loves exactly three things: her chosen family, her hairdresser (worth every penny plus tip), and killing bad men.
By day she's an ambitious pharma rep with a flawless reputation and designer wardrobe. By night, she culls South Louisiana of unscrupulous men—monsters who think they've evaded justice, until they meet her. Sure, the evening news may have started throwing around phrases like serial killer, but Cordelia knows that's absurd. She's not a killer, she is simply karma. And being karma requires complete and utter control.
But when Cordelia discovers a flaw in her perfectly designed system for eliminating monsters, pressure heightens. And it only intensifies when her best friend starts dating a man Cordelia isn't sure is a good person. Someone who might just unravel everything she has worked for.
Soon enough Cordelia has to come face to face with the choices she's made. The good, the bad, and the murderous. Both her family, and her freedom, depend on it.

Read if you like:

🪦 Finlay Donovan Vibes
👯‍♀️ Best Friends

This book is the start to what I’m assuming will be a similar-ish series to the Finlay series, but instead of dead bodies falling in our FMC’s lap, she is dropping them herself and is reminiscent of a female Dexter taking out the trash.

When things get a bit too close to home though, that’s when everything goes off the rails especially when her body drop connection is comprised & she finds out her best friends boyfriend is a not a good guy, and has to decide how she is going to handle that knowledge.

Cordelia is definitely an interesting character filled with childhood trauma and a morally grey set of ethos.

It did feel like the story ended a bit abruptly and not necessarily tied in a bow like I was expecting it to be, which makes me think there will be a second book?! If you don’t mind a bit of a loose ending and like dark humor mixed with light thriller vibes I would recommend.

Thanks so much to the Dreamscape Media for my ALC in exchange for my honest review.

(It says I finished this review, but I don't remember actually submitting it, so here it is again!)

When I saw that this book was about a female serial killer, I automatically put it on my TBR. I was so excited to receive the audiobook through NetGalley and got to it as soon as possible. I loved Cordelia's character and her love for her found family. One of my favorite things in these kinds of books is when everything starts to go wrong. Sometimes you want them to make it through, sometimes you don't, but it's fun to watch it all fall apart. That said, for all that happened to Cordelia, I wish there had been some consequences. Everything got tied up SO nicely. It was a bit disappointing. Also, her best friend actually helping dispose of her boyfriend's body? That felt like a quick emotional turnaround, even though it was an attempt at writing it like it made sense and was a natural progression of emotions. There were so many hiccups in her plans after she killed Simon that it didn't feel right that EVERY SINGLE ONE just happened to work out perfectly.

There's definitely potential for a sequel, and I will read it if one is ever written because I need to see if Cordelia's lies to her bff ever come out or if she'll ever actually get caught. Overall, quick and fun read, and I'd recommend it to people who are a fan of Jeneva Rose's writing style and twists.

I found myself laughing out loud so many times! Cordelia and her friend are hilarious and their banter provides so much comedic relief during tense times of the book. There were some scenes that I was sweating it out, rooting Cordelia along the entire time! The fact that the author is able to make you cheer for a serial killer just shows how well done this book is! I did the audiobook thanks to @dreamscape and I loved it! I would highly recommend that for my audiobook lovers! I could get lost in this story so easily! There’s still time to preorder before it comes out next week!

Cordelia Black makes it her mission in life to rid the world of bad men - ,men who do awful things to women and children. She has been doing this since her first (accidental) kill in college. By day she's an ambitious pharma rep with a flawless reputation and designer wardrobe. By night, she culls South Louisiana of unscrupulous men―monsters who think they've evaded justice, until they meet her. She has a perfectly designed system, and as long as she doesn't deviate from her plan, then she should be fine. But when her best friend starts dating a man Cordelia is sure is a bad man, she is forced to go off script. That is when everything begins to unravel.........

This book was so much fun. I never thought I would root for a serial killer, but hey, she IS ridding the world of bad men. I loved how, after she dealt with Diane's boyfriend, Simon, things begin spiraling .out of control. I also loved the "8 pound devil dog" that lived across the road from her, and the way Mango kept escaping her owner's yard and running into Cordelia's house to beg for a slice of American cheese. My only complaint was the narrator. The way they read the book, with every line exaggerated got on my nerves. But that is a me thing. Overall, this is an excellent story, that will keep you in suspense for the entire book. I definitely recommend it!

I don’t know if this is considered a Cozy mystery, but I could see parts of it falling into that genre. I really enjoyed this. The story the characters and the writing all worked really well for me. It was a quick read, it kept me entertained the entire time and the content was not overly heavy. I never felt bogged down with the details or the plot. Highly recommend this one and will read more by this author. I’m not sure if this is going to be a series, but it was left in a way that it could be if she wanted to continue.
The narration was excellent. Always enjoy listening to a book with Stefanie Kay narrating.

I listened to the audiobook and loved the narrator! This was the whole package for me- humor, intrigue, suspense and friendship along with crazy situations. It was reminiscent of Finley Donovan for me! Highly recommend this one and I look forward to reading more by this author!

Love love love me a book from the serial killer's POV. This was not as disturbing as other books I've read, more of a women's popcorn type of thriller but still dark and gruesome.

This book is about a woman serial killer - she has her life together. A great job, a great friendship, and a hobby that keeps her happy - killing bad men. Until everything falls apart and starts to spiral out of control. The town Cordelia lives in starts to notice that men are disappearing, and are investigating it as a case of serial killer. And now they caught the body snatcher that Cordelia used to get rid of her bodies through. Oh and she went on a date with the police officer that is on this case. Did I mention the weird acting new boyfriend of her best friend's? He needs to go. But how, especially when everything is kind of on fire?
This book was kind of hilarious. But I wasn't sure if I wanted Cordelia to get caught or get away with everything. She is not a bad person, but she does horrible things. And when she gets stuck with a dead decomposing body in her freezer in the Louisiana heat, I couldn't help but laugh at her situation.

I completely enjoyed the audio book and the narrator. The story was propulsive and full of character. I hope this becomes a series and I can find Cordelia in more crazy situations.

Looking for a book with a magical mist that shows up in your eyes when you’re bad, a woman with a taste for vengeance, and the annoying moment when your BFF’s new BF is a total drag and you want to kill him? Then This Girl's a Killer by Emma C. Wells will be perfect for you! #girlpower #girlboss #girlsgirl
If my sarcastic intro and rating didn’t give it away, I did not like this book. The plot was full of inconsistencies, the characters were under-developed, and the main character’s internal monologue had me pulling my hair out. The whole book, we’re told by other characters, and by Cordelia herself, that she’s extremely put together, pays attention to every detail, and is never late. And then none of those characteristics are ever displayed in the time we spend with Cordelia. She also has some deep and tragic backstory we get next to no information on, but is the sole reason why she’s turned into a killer?
I was still feeling hopeful up to that point. Sometimes life just gets messy, especially when you’re a serial killer. And I don’t need to know EVERYTHING about a character’s background to follow a story. Then we got to using “bestie” 24 times in a chapter. Then there was the Xbox Cordelia bought for her goddaughter Sugar (!!) that was for Zelda. Then the smoke was introduced. That’s right, Cordelia has to see a special gray smoke in a man’s eyes before she decides to kill him. This is literally never explained.
I finished this book hoping for any redemption. I love women committing crimes so much that I just pressed on through every over-explained scene and plot hole. But it got even more disappointing the further in I got. However, I’m not trying to yuck anyone’s yum! If any of this book's weirdly specific traits caught your eye, you should definitely give it a shot! I’d also recommend it if you’re really craving a female Dexter storyline!

I love female vigilante stories, and this one is done well. Cordelia isn't crazy, she's simply called to set things right. How can she let predators just run around continuing hurt people after she sees that the criminal justice won't protect women?
Cordelia is surprisingly likeable and protective of those she loves. The story is also funny, a little gruesome, and there was suspense. The narrator was excellent-- I felt as though I was listening to the real character tell her story.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me listen to this audiobook
