Well. I can clearly envision what this book SHOULD have been - an urban fantasy thriller with an exciting long-con, believable characters and great writing. But it missed the mark on all of those fronts and, frankly, had a pretty problematic view of women and rape. I mean, the story made sense? I was actually intrigued by the idea of a honeypot scheme, and mind powers, and the cover for this book is AWESOME. But never in my life have I found myself relieved that a book is too short. This was a first.
The writing is the biggest issue - it comes across (most of the time) as an unedited jumble of thoughts on what is happening with SO MUCH REPETITION. The book was only 79 pages, so any info-dumping needs to be short and snappy, not told to me again and again. The pacing was off too, to much exposition and then a very rushed climax. The characters? I pretty much hated them all. Ash spent too much time feeling sorry for herself and stating every way in which her fraternal twin is far prettier than her. Her family were all awful too. Charles...don't even get me started. And Lee? Am I supposed top be rooting for a character that refers to all women as either 'colleagues or fucks'? Just because he's not outwardly a jerk to women? The powers were given virtually no explanation as to how or why they fit into the world, and the rape story-line was handled APPALLINGLY. Yeah, sorry, I'm not a fan.
