The Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists remains one of the most reliable and accessible resources for mental health professionals navigating the complex world of psychiatric medications. Now in its tenth edition, this book has been thoroughly updated to reflect the latest research, including recent developments in genomic testing, emerging medications, and psychopharmacology tailored to older adults.
The structure of the handbook is practical and intuitive. Disorders are grouped clearly, and the medications related to each are broken down in a straightforward manner. The authors manage to strike a difficult balance — providing enough scientific detail to be informative without overwhelming clinicians who are not prescribers. Topics such as drug interactions, side effects, dosage considerations, and safe discontinuation practices are all addressed with clarity.
One standout feature is the attention given to cultural considerations in medication use, an area often overlooked in clinical manuals. Additionally, the expanded material on new medications and treatment approaches shows a clear effort to keep pace with a rapidly evolving field.
The collective expertise of the authors — spanning psychology, psychiatry, and pharmacy — shines through. Their interdisciplinary approach ensures that the book addresses the needs of therapists, counselors, and prescribers alike, making it suitable as both a daily reference and a teaching tool for graduate students.
While the book is exceptionally thorough, some readers might wish for even more integration of case examples or clinical vignettes to bridge theory with practice. Still, its clean organization and reader-friendly tone make it an indispensable addition to any clinician’s library.

Mental health clinicians will, I think, welcome this excellent reference. It is comprehensive and detailed.
The text is broken into four major sections with additional information at the end of the book. These sections are Understanding Pyschopharmacology: The Basics; Clinical Syndromes: Etiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment Implications; Medications; and Special Considerations.
It is easy to search for needed information in the book. There is much more than an explication of medications. There are also descriptions of psychological/psychiatric disorders, for example.
Highly recommended for its intended audience.
Many thanks to NetGalley and New Harbinger Publications for this title. All opinions are my own.

I've had the previous edition of this book on my shelf for years, and it's been a fantastic resource for both myself and my therapy clients. The book is clear and concise, with practical examples and handy bullet points that make it easy to digest. Overall, it's a super useful handbook for anyone in the mental health field.

Perfect manual for what I need, because in my role as a psychologist/psychotherapist I do not prescribe medication, but deal with people who take a lot of it. Clear, with short, to-the-point clinical examples and a series of bulleted lists that make my day.
I received from the publisher a digital advanced review copy in exchange for a honest review.

Thank you to Netgallery and New Harbinger publications for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book covers the basics of clinical psychopharmacology in an approachable manner. As a practicing clinician, I find the information in this book to be invaluable. I particularly appreciated the section on medication non-adherence, as this is a topic that is frequently discussed in MDTs and with individual clients. I found that to be particularly useful. I also really appreciated the neurobiology review which made complex concepts easy to understand. Overall, I find there to be a lot of clinical utility in this handbook for therapists/clinicians.
I will definitely be purchasing a copy of this edition to keep at my office once this is published so that I can reference it. This book would be a good edition to have on hand for any practicing clinician.
