Willie Black, the alcoholic, journalist son of a pot-head mother and her latest love, Awesome Dude, gets involved in what appears to be a random shooting of his mother’s ex-love, Les Hacker. However, the more he hears about Les’ history in baseball, the more likely it appears to be that this shooting was anything but random.
I wish I could rate this book higher, but it really didn’t hold my interest. If I happened to meet Willie Black, I think I would find that we had nothing at all in common with each other. Nor would I have made any friendships with any of the other characters in this book. Maybe if I had an interest in baseball or characters who I could best describe as being a somewhat “wacky” assortment of misfits and eccentrics, I would feel more inclined to give a better review. It’s written in a noir style, though it takes place in modern times – that part is fine. I just couldn’t get into the story.
Although the book is reasonably well written (there were a few typos but not so many as to be distracting), there were some formatting issues in the Kindle version that I received.
Disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for agreeing to provide a fair and unbiased review. I have never met the author, nor do I know him personally.
