Very cute book about a mole looking for a hat that fits him. Perfect book for children ages 2-6. The illustrations are super simple, but cute and not over stimulating. This would make for a fun extension to have children find their own hats as they read the story. I will be purchasing this book for my own physical library.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebook Kids for the advanced reader copy. This book is set to be published on April 1, 2025.
“Is That My Hat” by Kevin Payne is a cute quick story about Mole finding his hat. It’s a great simple book to read to my toddlers, something they can follow along with. Because of the simple words and pictures, it would also be great for beginner readers. My preschoolers loved reading it and I’m sure we will be reading again soon. :)

Thank you to Kevin Payne's team and Netgalley for allowing me an advanced copy of this book.
This book is perfect for 2-4 year olds. My daughter loved looking at the mole's choices of different hats and then going to find hats off her own that looked similar. I loved the different colors and brevity of this book. It's the perfect book to read at bedtime!
This book is adorable! A quick and easy read for young children. The illustrations are quite adorable and overall it’s a fun and silly book.
This picture book is cute and silly, with simple illustrations and short sentences that are great for reading aloud to toddlers and preschoolers. The story has charming, understated humor, and the mole's project of making his own hat could inspire a classroom activity or craft at home. This book is a great fit for young children.
Hats seem to be having a moment in children's books right now, and I'm okay with it. Mole is an adorable character and the story is simple and sweet. I definitely recommend.
A mole declares “I want a hat!” and as he tries on each one he comes across, he mentions how they are not appropriate: “This hat is too small.” He decides to gather various materials to make a hat. This brief, simple story will inspire hat-making after sharing at a storytime or one-on-one. The text is easy to read (and guess) because the full-color illustrations, done in pencil with digital coloring, give many clues to the words being used. Although this is not particularly original or innovative, it is an effective, humorous story that will inspire creativity.
Is your hat too, tasty? Mole has that problem, too, in this super cute book about finding your own style.
Picture books create true delight when the images help the words reach father than they could on their own. And when they make us giggle. Is That My Hat does both! I loved that Mole not only found his own style… he found it by making his own style himself. Toddlers are absolutely going to love this one.
Thanks to @NetGalley for sharing this DRC with me for an honest review.
Very cute! Definitely feels like it could be part of the Klassen hat series. The story itself was pretty short and simple, but that tends to be just right with preschool (or younger) readers in my experience. I will definitely keep this one in mind for future Storytimes!
This is a wonderful, sweet little story about a mole who tries all different types of hats, and in the end, decides to make his own.
I can see this book being a perfect board book for toddlers and little ones.
I would have loved to see a slightly bigger message at the end about making something uniquely for yourself, but I understand it fits perfectly as it is for the toddler audience. It also sets up a great opportunity for a follow-up book!

A cute book, I read it to my kids. They thought it was fun to see the different things that the mole thought was a hat, until he finally made his own unique and special hat. The pictures are cute. This book is definitely for a younger toddler with how simple the illustrations are and how silly it is.
I really loved this book. Great for home or the classroom. Every page made me smile. Mole is adorable.
My kids loved this silly book! My 7 and 4 year old towns like the illustrations and the silliness of the book. They also thought the hat at the end was so pretty and the ending was silly.
4.5 stars from us:
Kiddo #1: this was a cute, silly, easy to read book (she’s 7 and could read it to us)
Kiddo #2; I loved it- but it was a little short.
Kiddo #3: 5 fingers! (5 stars).
A very short book with few words, this is about a mole who tries on many different hats. Good for the younger toddler set.
Is That My Hat? is an adorable journey with our new friend, Mole, as they try to find the perfect hat that suits them best. Mole tries several hate, but none feel right, then sets out to see if they can find hat, but other's don't love them, or else they belong to someone else. Mole then gets the genius idea to make their own hat from things that bring them joy! The illustrations are winsome and the words are simple, yet engaging! We cannot wait to add this hardcover book to our home library!
Is That My Hat? follows the adventures of a mole looking for a hat to wear. This book is short, sweet, and would be perfect for reading in a classroom or at bedtime.

Is That My Hat? Is a book I would recommend for primary grades. The repetition of appropriate leveled words and phrases makes this a book to encourage independent reading for our younger readers.
Well, personally, I think Mole looks absolutely amazing in every hat he wears but I understand that he needs to find just the right one for his personality so that he feels like his very best Mole self.
This is a fun story to read with your Pre-K kids; it would pair magically with a hat party, with plenty of different fabulous hats to try on!
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read the free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Such a cute book that kids will find engaging. Mole wants a hat and tries on many. He thinks he finds the perfect hat but no, not quite. He then decides to make his own. The ending is so funny.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is a cute story where mole is looking for different hats to wear. The words are few per page and predictable for young children to start to anticipate what might happen next.
The ending where mole makes his own hat could easily be extended into a classroom activity.
Thank you to NetGalley and sourcebook kids for allowing me to review a copy of this book.
