This was just pure fun in a bucket, you guys. Absolutely entertaining from front to back. It's a YA Urban Fantasy with romantic elements based around a secret society of dragon shifters who come into their powers during their teens and are then drafted into a sort of "Dragon High" to learn how to control their new gifts.

The main character is Bryn, a soon-to-be sixteen-year-old, who was just fantastic; witty, snarky, and hilarious. Her sudden change from ordinary human to BOOM! YOU'RE A DRAGON! was handled with comedic aplomb. No serious drama llamas in sight here. It was light-hearted, freaky shifting fun!

The romantic interest was sweet as could be, although a little slow on the uptake! I think I'd have preferred if he were closer to Bryn's own age, though. He was nineteen, which seems very different to newly sixteen. And that is very hypocritical of me to say since my husband is 14 years my senior! But it's different with teens. Especially ones as young as 15/16. Anyhoo, that was my only concern. Otherwise he was perfect! :)

All together, a great, fun read! Highly recommended.

This was my first book by Chris Cannon and I really enjoyed it.
The story was unique in the fact that you get to learn all about being a shape-shifting dragon right along with the character. New experiences, new school, new people - friend and foe.
I look forward to reading more from this series and author.

It was a fun YA urban fantasy. A 16 year old girl finds out that her family are humans that can shape shift into dragons. The book takes you on her journey as she gets sent to school with other dragons and must navigate this new world she is a part of. Fun cast of characters and the first of many books in a series.

Author Chris Cannon has been a favorite author of mine for a while now and this book has not changed my mind on that. I loved this story, it was a little different and a little slow for me to get into, but once I was it was amazing and just flowed.

The book going down in flames is about a girl that finds out that she is a shape shifter/dragon. Bryn is a teen girl who has been raised in the normal world. She is thrust into a world of dragon shifters while being shipped off to a new school. There are different types of dragons that can influence different elements. This book was very intriguing and really managed to keep my attention the whole time. I really liked the main character and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This one is a good beginning to one that will give you the story of a young girl and the dragon she is. Same ole things will still be barriers with no matter on what they are with it being even more so with them. Then there is also Zavien who will when they cross paths try and shape things to a different tune. The romance is enticing with it capturing you along with them. The drama that builds will keep you on the edge with you also getting steamy with it. Found this a bit different but also some of the problems the same. Look forward to the next one.

Going down in flames is a teen read about a girl who discovers she is a Shifter-Dragon. Bryn is on her way home from school when she notices someone following her. Her eyes are open to new possibilities. Her family are outcasts but that doesn't mean she won't be sucked into the shifter world. All dragons have to attend a special school to help them develop their talents.

Dragon-shifters live by the rules of the Directorate. They get the job they are influenced to study. They marry a dragon of the same breed and stature. Bryn is the exception to the rule. Her parents ran away together. She is both a blue and red dragon. She has abilities she shouldn't. Bryn isn't going to have an easy ride. People are mean and she doesn't fit. With the help of some friends, she has to find her place. Dragons are known to have tempers and this makes a fiery read. The story fits perfectly for the teen audience.

This book is the start of a series. It's a complete story but will leave you with questions. Luckily there are another 4 books to sink your teeth into. Book 5- Burning Bright is due out on 4th June 2018.

"Going Down in Flames" is the first in an intriguing series about people who can shift into dragons. In this unique world, dragons look completely human but can shift when so desired. They are also born with certain magical abilities. For instance, some can breathe fire, while others produce ice, and still others produce electricity. Dragons also live in a very structured society with rigid social classes and forced betrothals/marriages. These restrictions are mostly based on birth and color (e.g. blue dragons, red dragons, orange dragons, etc.). The colors appear on the scales (you get the color of your parents) and in general appearance as a human (e.g. skin, hair color).

The book begins abruptly when Bryn is followed by a strange guy, Zavien, who eventually reveals himself and her to be a dragon (it cuts right to the chase!). Upon speaking with her parents, she learns that they are outcasts- her mother was a blue dragon (ice) while her father was a red dragon (fire). The Directorate (blue dragons who rule over everyone else with an iron fist) has told everyone that mixed dragon colors can't produce viable offspring, so her parents were shocked when they got pregnant and ran away. Now that Bryn is almost 16 years old, her powers are coming out and they can't hide their secret much longer.

To add to these changes, Bryn finds out the Directorate is forcing her to attend a boarding school, the Institute for Excellence, away from her parents and friends. The beginning of the book moves fast (hooray! No waiting forever to get to the meat of the story) and soon Bryn is at the Institute, adjusting not only to a whole society she didn't know existed but also to being a social pariah. Luckily, she has Zavien, who is hoping to change some of the harsher laws for dragons, and her new friends Ivy and Clint.

As Bryn soon learns, the dragon world is more complex and filled with dangers than she could have imagined. With forbidden romances (but very clean- only some kisses), indecent proposals, and attempts on her life, the Institute is anything but boring. Add to this dragons and magic, and you've got a winning YA fantasy series!

I have actually read these books out of order, so I can say that the first one is a little more smash-cut/fast-paced than the later books where the author has really hit her stride. On the one hand, it moves so quickly, there's never any time for the agony of a drawn out scene. On the other, the build up to romance and other events (e.g. the knight taking his helm), never feel as significant as they would with a slower build. I had mixed feelings with regards to the pace. As for the plot, I absolutely loved it! I was hooked from page one, and absolutely devoured the book! Reading them in order may have been better for plot continuity, but they are written so well that I had no problem following the plot out of order. I highly recommend picking up this fun YA series!!

Please note that I received a digital copy from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

A week before her 16th birthday, Bryn notices that a strange (yet attractive) boy has been stalking her. When she finally has a confrontation with him, he tells her some outrageous things, such as her being a dragon and can breathe fire. When Bryn tells her parents about the strange boy's words, they don't deny it, in fact, they actually confirm his tale. Bryn is an anomaly, a hybrid dragon offspring from 2 different types of dragons. Bryn now must face this new world she knows nothing about, where she is seen as abnormal, while a rebellion is brewing close to the surface.

I absolutely loved the concept of this book. This is the first time that I have ever read a book about a female shapeshifting dragon, making this story unique right from the start. The story was able to capture the feelings of a teen girl, while at the same time incorporate all kinds of supernatural elements, politics and the caste system of the different colored dragons. There was a little bit of everything in this story to keep me on my toes.

I enjoyed Bryn's spunk. She does not take anything lying down, instead she heads into it swinging. She is the narrator of the story so the reader gets to learn the complexities of this dangerous exciting world right along with her. It kinda sorta felt like a female Harry Potter meets dragons (and I mean that in the best possible way) where there is a whole Dragon special town the students can go to and how everyone knows who Bryn is (she is totally infamous) and her back story. She was so in the dark about everything I wanted to wrap her in bubble wrap.
Did I mention the hunky love interest Zavien?? And Jaxon has definitely peaked my interest...I want to know what role he will play in Bryn's life

I am so glad that I got the opportunity to read the first book in this series and now I can't wait to see what will happen next. If you like strong female characters who don't need to be saved and cuss like a sailor, as well as some complicated supernatural adventures, then this is a book for you to pick up. I will most certainly read the rest of the series and I look forward to more from this author.
