All We Lost Was Everything by Sloan Harlow is a YA romantic thriller that follows 18 year old River Santos as she navigates life, love, and grief after the tragic death of her father and the abandonment by her mother.

As she attempts to move on long buried family secrets come to the light and she finds that not everyone is who they seem.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I was extremely excited to read it but was a little let down. The pacing seemed really off and timelines did not always seem to match. There were also some very small details that some may not have caught that I did but with a little research could have been corrected.

I did enjoy this though. It had a lot of good moments. I think the romance was well done and it really helped add a little bit to the story. It did also have some twists. I did not see one of them coming and was surprised how it panned out.

I would say this is definitely a YA novel even though there was a little spice. Definitely think I would read more of her work though as I did enjoy the writing and tone of the author.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! This title will be available on May 6, 2025!

Fast paced and a great read. I could relate with Rivers struggles a lot and felt a deep connection to this book. Great plot twists that I couldn’t predict. I think the book could have ended before it did, but I still enjoyed.

Eighteen-year-old River Santos has lost everything when their house caught on fire and took everything with it – including her father; everyone said it was a miracle that she survived!

A GoFundMe was organized and the donations added up ~ five-dollars from some and more from others then a shock when someone anonymously donates two million dollars!!!

River works in at Gertie’s Diner and as customers enter she wonders if they were her benefactor.
Since coworker Logan Evans acts like he hates her she has ruled him out.
Needless to say, I was sure things were going to get better between these two!

I just loved River. She was a good person who loved both her parents and was deeply hurt when her father died. Her mother was loving but struggled with moods; she called them her “Blue Days. She enjoyed hiking and one day when on a hike and never came back.

River was dealt a lot but was able to deal with it.
This was a quick read that I did enjoy!

This book was a fast paced, enjoyable read that kept me guessing until the very end. River loses everything including her father in a house fire one night, and she has to figure out her new normal. She discovers that not all is as it seemed and her parents hadn't told her everything about their pasts. I read from about 50% to the end all in one sitting, I had to find out what happened! Although this is marketed as a YA book, I would recommend it for ages 18+ due to the spice.

Spiciness: 2/5 🌶️

This book was heart breaking. The main character seriously loses everything and you just feel so bad for her. Everyone is keeping secrets and lying. I swear you just want to hug River tight. You feel every emotion possible while reading this book. I haven’t had many books stick with me and just suck me in emotionally. But this one hits the heart.

I did enjoy my time with this book and characters. I did find myself at times wondering how this was all gonna tie together but in the end we made it to the finish line. I enjoyed the authors writing more so than I did the contents of the story. I will give her future books a shot.

After a fire destroyed River’s home and took her father’s life, she receives an anonymous donation to her GoFundMe campaign. Not knowing the identity of the donor makes her reluctant to spent the money so she lives in a crappy apartment with her aunt and works at the local diner. She’s attracted to her coworker moody Logan while suffering from being dumped abruptly by her high school sweetheart Noah.

River makes a sympathetic protagonist as she endures a string of disappointments. Luckily she has the support system of her aunt as well as her best friend Tawny and stray cat Tigery. The book provides the perspectives of River and Logan, which gives insight into Logan’s feelings for River. With their love story and the various mystery elements plant the book firmly in the romantic suspense genre, while River being a high school senior makes it a young adult novel.

The various plot mysteries as well as the chemistry between River and Logan made the book hard to put down. Each mystery had a great payoff and the ending was supremely satisfying.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is my second Sloan Harlow book. I loved the first so much that I jumped on the chance to read this. And while it was good, there were multiple things that really pulled me from the story and decreased my enjoyment.

I didn’t love Logan and Noah. Both seemed like weak, unsure men who didn’t have much of a spine at times. I liked River and Tawny and Anna, and while I had some idea of what was going on throughout parts of the book, the real bad guy came as a surprise to me.

Some of the biggest things I had trouble with were quite small, but also quite easy to remedy with a touch of research.
* You really can’t give anonymously to GoFundMe. Unless the person gives a fake name, the recipient can see who gave what—it’s only anonymous to the public.
* I’m about 99% sure a bank employee cannot just unlock a safe deposit box with a single key and let you have at it, regardless of how well they know you
* To Tesla engines roar? I thought electric vehicles were mostly silent
* The minimum sentence for vehicular manslaughter in AZ is 7 years
* Even with $2M to spend, investing in a business and buying a house in Scottsdale AZ would be expensive as heck, and, I’m guessing, would cost much more than that.

If I suspended reality, and didn’t mind weak characters, this would be a great book. As it is, I can’t say I enjoyed this nearly as much as I was hoping to.

All We Lost Was Everything is a story about young adult River who loses everything in one horrific night. River is lost after a blazing fire takes her father and all she has known. Through her tragedy she discovers truth, love, secrets, and happiness.

I enjoyed this book and am rating it 3.5 stars. There was a lot going on in this book and it was hard to place if it was a book about personal growth through grief, a romance, or a thriller. I enjoyed the twists/turns, the relationships between all the characters, and how River was able to preserve through all the adversity she experienced.

I was confused by this book. I can’t figure out what genre to categorize it. At times it felt like a young adult romance, but then the story would turn spicy. Sometimes it had thriller aspects to it, but it wasn’t consistent. I liked the pacing and character development, but overall this wasn’t my jam. Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy.

This was a decent YA suspense. I gave it 3 stars because it doesn't seem like the time line fits very well, but the overall story was pretty good.

All We Lost Was Everything was surprisingly good. Nothing super deep, but it was a very enjoyable story. The ending was not super obvious and it kept my attention from start to finish. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. After reading this book, I immediately put Sloan Harlow's other book on my TBR pile.
Our main character, River, is the sole survivor of a house fire that took the life of her father. Her mother was already out of the picture. Her best friend started a Go Fund Me in which someone anonymously donated two million dollars to. This story follows River as she tries to figure out where she belongs now and how to live in her new reality. Along the way, she learns more about her parents' past and realizes that they were not the people she thought she knew. Through betrayal, loss and love, this story does have an HEA. I enjoyed how the author portrayed River going through her grief and betrayal. I felt it was very believable. All in all, I really enjoyed this story and would like to thank Net Galley for the opportunity to read this arc.

the twists in this book were crazy! it definitely kept me engaged and wondering what the real truth was. river and logan’s romance didn’t really feel natural to me, though, and i wish it had been more genuine. thank you to netgalley and the author for this ARC!

This was a fast, fun, and twisty novel that kept me on my toes and my jaw on the floor.

Poor River. Her mother is missing (for months now) and she is dumped by her boyfriend the night her father dies in a fire. You can't help but feel empathy for everything she's went through and she continues to deal with. While dealing with it all she falls for Logan, who works at a diner locally that her best friend also works at. Logan is a bad boy with trauma of his own.

This novel is characterized as young adult, but as a disclaimer : there are a couple of steamy scenes and most importantly mature subject matter, which think was handled with care.

I loved the duel POV & the letter interludes we received throughout the book. And this book seemed very much a mystery AND a romance and that's a big win for me! Thank you to NetGalley & PENGUIN GROUP for this ARC!

"All We Lost Was Everything" follows Rivers Santos after the disappearance of her father, and the death of her mother.

In this, I found some parts of the story pretty repetitive, but it's well worth the twist, and to be expected in a YA novel exploring grief and a mystery.

Sloan Harlowe lays out the mystery in a way that is satisfying and fulfilling, and glides across conventional YA tropes with ease.

This book had so much potential, but fell flat for me. It seemed like there were too many storylines going on all at the same time. Was the fire that killed River’s dad set on purpose? Who set the fire? Where is River’s mom? Who sent her $2M? Why did Noah break up with her?

In the end, things seemed very rushed just to get to the point and then tie everything up with a bow. This could have been a quick read, but I found myself losing interest. Overall, it was a decent read, but I would have loved more character development.

This book gave me serious if only he had been with me vibes only with a thriller feel. Its dual POV from Melody and Logan's perspective. Melody is the daughter of two parents who absolutely love her. Her dad is a recovering alcoholic that was a hero and idol to so many and her mom had demons that she worked through by disappearing and going on hikes. Almost a year ago her mother went on a hike and never returned. Not long after her house caught fire and her dad died in it while Melody survived the fire. Her boyfriend of years also broke up with her that same morning before her life went to shit. She has a GoFundme that someone miraculously donated 2 million dollars to that she hasn't touched. She works at a diner with her best friend Tawny and a mysteriously handsome man named Logan. After a few situations Logan's intent to stay away from Melody is futile because his pull to her is too strong. Only everything isn't as it seems and a lot of people have secrets.

I loved this book. Every second of it. I was so wrapped up in Melody and Logan that I didn't even realize there was a mystery happening in the depths of the pages. There were so many secrets with so many people. I felt so bad for Melody because almost everyone around her was holding crucial information back. Her father seemed like such a loving man that I wish he could have lived. I never guessed correctly who sent the money and never would have guessed who it was.

Logan was so full of adoration and anger you could practically taste it. I wondered why he had such hatred for Noah and to find out the reason was heartbreaking. It shows just how much actions have consequences. His father wasn't my favorite but to see him change for his son connected so deeply for me. I didn't know what Logan was hiding but the mystery of it was killing me. He kept repeating, if she ever finds out that's it, that I seriously thought he had something to do with the fire.

Tawny was such an amazing friend to Melody. I loved her so much at first but to find out her secrets was gutwrenching. But Tita Anna was everything. She was the only family Melody had left and she tried so hard to help and be there for Melody. She was the saint of the story, I swear.

Noah was a spineless coward. He cared so much for his dad's approval that he hurt the girl he loved. Then he tried to erase it or half ass fix it. Everything he did was a pathetic attempt to get her back. Even when he was there for her he still wouldn't reveal the truth of why he broke up with her so suddenly and basically expected or hoped for her to get over it and just fall blindly back into his arms. I'm proud of Melody for not falling for it. Noah's dad wasn't much better. That dude is so self absorbed and selfish. So fake too.

Melody seriously was one bad ass bitch. She was strong in ways that don't seem like strengths. She never let everything that happened to her harden her heart and that is so admirable.

I loved her and Logan together. Through even the secrets and mysteries I felt the love emanating through both sides. I also felt Logan's regret.

I never would have guessed who caused all the pain Melody went through. That person was not even on the list.

This book was so full of pain. So much tragedy too. But the love was there as well. I felt every emotion reading this and loved every twist and turn it took. I highly recommend reading it.
