"For the ones that fell off the summit, looked up from the bottom, and started climbing again anyway." - Sloan Harlow

I am offering my honest opinion voluntarily.

This book was world-shattering; everything that could have gone wrong did. There were so many turns, family issues, a love triangle type of situation, murder, and blackmail, sheesh! River Santos has a story to rival all stories, with a recovering alcoholic father whom she adores and a mentally disturbed mother with a tragic past, a boyfriend who dumped her without explanation, a best friend with ulterior motives, and a broody coworker turned lover with harmful secrets.

Sloan wrote an amazing dark romantic thriller, and the ending....OMG! There is so much I want to say...I am going to spoil it....GO GET THE BOOK!!

i’m sorry but i couldn’t stand the writing, or the characters, or the plot.

really it was all just trashy. and not trashy like a reality tv show you want to binge.

i’m guessing this just wasn’t my cup of tea, but usually i love thriller/romance books.

this just wasn’t it.

it all seemed so surface value and even tho this book was supposed to be tragic and dripping in grief, i just couldn’t connect.
the emotions didn’t feel real to me.

i would’ve rather spent my time studying for the test i have coming up then have wasted it on this 🫤😀

I was so exited to get the ARC for Sloan's second book. I loved her first one and was crossing my fingers that was just as good.... Spoiler, it was fantastic.

A young woman loses her dad in a house fire, where she almost dies as well. Someone pulls her out, but she barely remembers anything... Her mom is missing (which isn't unusual) until it turns it months..

Everyone in her life is keeping things from her.. mom, dad, ex boyfriend, best friend, new mysterious and handsome coworker... They all have secrets that could wreck their relationship with her, some are dangerous.

I was completely wrecked when I finally out everything together. So many lies and missing information from people that claim to love her.. I did however appreciate how she finally put herself first at the end...

Thank you netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

For me, this novel did not work very well. The story is trying to blend together romance with thriller/suspense. Unfortunately, the first half of the novel read as a romance with characters who had secrets, which is often the case in a romance. There was no sense of suspense or danger in the novel until around halfway through, where a small hint of the mystery arrived. The second half of the novel was focused on this mystery, which resulted in the romantic relationship disappearing for most of the second half. The mystery itself felt flat, making the second half of the book lack impact.

This is another book labeled YA that is too graphic for many bookworm high school students who want to read more edgy books but are not quite ready to be exposed to quite so much. Aside from that issue, this read captured me while I was reading it, but after a few days, I honestly don’t remember much about it. It was a quick read with some interesting twists in River’s family and friend life that were plotted well, a couple backstories that were important but lacked the depth needed, and a level of “really?” that just left me happy I was finished.

Thank you to Penguin Young Readers Group, G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers, Netgalley, and the author for early access to this novel.

Solid YA thriller, although I was surprised by the sex scene halfway through! I loved our main character, and was all-in on the mystery unfolding. I didn't see it coming, and was proud of the character growth as things got more convoluted and confusing for River. Definitely a high school YA book!

Rounded up from 3.5.

Everyone wants to win the lottery, but are the sacrifices made first worth it? River Santos gets rich QUICK, unfortunately due to a GoFundMe after her dad's death, mom's disappearance and breakup from her long-term boyfriend. At least she has her Aunt and her best friend to rely on...

I picked up this book because the cover reminded me of "If He Had Been With Me," which a lot of my students enjoyed and I've recommended to some of my older students; however, it was very different. It was a thriller and romance in one. I would still recommend this book to my older students if asked, but I'd give a warning of there being some spice. It is a very quick and engaging story with lots of twists and difficult topics.

MY THOUGHTS-
This book had a lot going on—blurring the lines between YA, romance, mystery, and women’s fiction—sometimes making it feel a bit scattered. Certain subplots didn’t always flow seamlessly, which occasionally pulled me out of the story. But once I hit the halfway mark, I had to know how it ended.

The emotional depth and character development kept me hooked. The twists caught me off guard, and by the end, I found myself deeply invested in these characters. My heart broke a few times, but I also loved the way the story pieced itself back together.

Overall, it was an engrossing read that kept me turning the pages. If you enjoy books that mix genres and pack an emotional punch, this might be one to check out!

I finished this book a couple of days ago, but I’m still thinking about it. The main character, River, endures unimaginable hardships, and all the secrets kept me at the edge of my seat until the last page. I don’t read thriller novels often, so every plot twist shocked me. I thought the spice level was inappropriate for a YA novel, though, and some of the plot holes were hard for me to get past. Overall, this is a quick and engaging read, and definitely helped me get out of a reading slump.

All We Lost Was Everything by Sloan Harlow is a first person dual-POV YA romantic thriller. After her father’s death in a fire, losing her home, her long-term boyfriend breaking-up with her, and her mom disappearing, River’s life can’t fall apart anymore. Yet it very well could when she starts to see her coworker, Logan, and secrets about him and her parents start to come to the surface.

The major theme I noticed was that, as children, we are often not privy to so much about our parents’ lives before we came into existence and even who they are as people independent of us. River is aware of her father’s life as an AA sponsor for their family friend, and the father of River’s boyfriend, but she’s not aware of other details in her father’s life concerning alcoholism. River is also very unaware of her mother’s life before River came along and she doesn’t really have anyone to ask about it. As we get older, we start to learn about our parents’ mistakes and sometimes those mistakes feel impossible to forgive, a lesson that River learns herself.

Logan and River’s relationship is very intense very quickly. Logan has been into River for a while and River has certainly noticed Logan but was also getting over her break-up with Noah. Almost all of Logan’s POV chapters are centered around River and it was that and how much page time is devoted to their romance that made me conflicted on whether to call this a thriller romance or a romantic thriller. Ultimately, because River uncovering her parents’ past and how it connects to her present is the real guiding force, I settled on ‘romantic thriller,’ but the romance is very present. I love an obsessive love and this certainly delivered because Logan is down bad for River.

Content warning for mentions of alcoholism, car accidents, house fires and medial malpractice

I would recommend this to fans of YA thrillers with strong romance B plots and readers of YA romance who want a thriller while still getting a satisfying romance

4.5 stars for me!
This book had me in it's grips from the very beginning. My heart broke and rebuilt in the pages of this one. The love and saving grace of found family during the worst days and the devastation of not knowing the truth, only to find out some of the people you trusted the most were the very same people responsible for your deepest traumas.

Thank you for the opportunity to read “All We Lost Was Everything” in advance.

Unfortunately, this book wasn’t for me. I ended up skipping several chapters throughout the book until the end. The twists were interesting, especially the final reveal.

Please do not let my review deter anyone from reading this book. I’d still recommend this book since it definitely has a place in the YA thriller genre and the writing (from what I’ve read) is good.

The reating is based on what I’ve read.

I loved this!! I’m not super familiar with that romantic thriller style of books, but I ate this up! I loved River so much. She was really doing her best and ugh I felt for her. I can’t imagine going through everything she went through in this story. I was so intrigued by Logan as well! He’s so mysterious, but I was on his side so quickly. The pacing of this was so great and it felt so thrilling as the pieces were coming together at end!

River Santos lost everything including her father in a house fire. It has been a series of unfortunate events for River, who is just trying to hold herself together enough to rebuild her life. This is a wonderful coming of age story with a mix of romance and mystery. There are twists and turns I didn't see coming.

This book takes you through all of the emotions. River's search for her mystery donor after her house burns down and takes her father's life with it is heartbreaking. Her co-worker may have a connection to her family that she never expected. This is a good one.
