“All We Lost was Everything,” by Sloan Harlow

This book was really good. It was everything I expected and wanted from a Sloan Harlow book. I always like reading these types of books for a change of pace from fantasy action packed books. It was on the mundane side and slow but very contemporary and gave me the perfect amount of time to bond with the characters and get invested. 4 out of 5 stars.

All We Lost Was Everything is the kind of dark, twisty romantic thriller that grabs you by the heart. River’s grief, mystery, and slow-burn chemistry with Logan had me hooked from page one. The tension simmers, the secrets hit hard, and just when you think you’ve figured it out—boom, twist! If you love emotional reads with a side of suspense and a swoony, broody boy—this one’s for you.

This was such a good book. I enjoyed this one! I haven’t read a ton of Sloan’s work. But this made me want to read more! I thought it was well done and emotional. Really good book.

This was a great book, very fast paced quick little read, I could not put it down I was so intrigued but this plot, obviously some of it was predictable, but the parts that were not was jaw dropping!! Loved every minute of it!!

I’m always a sucker for a good YA book, and the twists and turns in All We Lost Was Everything definitely kept me guessing. Sloan Harlow does a great job building suspense, and I couldn’t help but keep reading to find out what happened next. The story deals with some heavy stuff and complicated relationships, which made it more than just your typical YA drama.

That said, the pacing was a bit off sometimes, some parts felt slow, while others wrapped up kind of quickly, especially near the end. The characters were interesting, but I didn’t always feel super connected to them, which made it a little harder to get fully invested. Still, there were some really honest and raw moments that hit home. Overall, it’s a pretty solid read with some good surprises. Not perfect, but definitely worth checking out if you like YA suspense with a bit of emotional depth.

This was a fast YA suspense with a little bit of romance. I enjoyed my time reading it. River's mom goes missing and her dad dies in a house fire. Her life seems over until mysteriously 2 million dollars was donated into her GoFund me account. Not wanting to touch that money or benefit in any way from her fathers death and mother disappearance, River continues to make ends met working at Gertie's Cafe and living with her Aunt Anna. Her best friend Tawny always by her side, also works at the cafe. River doesn't know what she would do without her aunt and best friend.

As she starts to uncover more about her parents, the details are not adding up. The new employee, Logan seems to despise River and the her high school boyfriend who broke up with her are is now back in the picture. River knows some of the details seem fishy and when she starts to investigate, it gets even more confusing. She thinks she knows everyones true intentions, but why are these new details making her question her own instincts.

The ending is a big twist I didn't see coming! It was a fun time and if you love mystery and suspense, you will love this book.

This book? Whew. All We Lost Was Everything had me hooked from page one and emotionally wrecked by the end—in the best way possible.

We follow 18-year-old River Santos, who’s already been through hell—a house fire, the loss of her dad, and the mysterious disappearance of her mom. But then she receives a two million dollar anonymous donation to her GoFundMe and… yeah. That’s when things really start getting weird.

River is one of those protagonists who just gets under your skin. She’s fierce, grieving, scrappy, and real. I felt her spiral as she tried to piece together the truth behind the fire, the money, her missing mom, and Logan’s suspiciously perfect hair… I mean, secrets.

Now let’s talk Logan. At first, he’s all mystery and snark, but then he’s stepping up, being protective, getting emotionally vulnerable—and suddenly I’m swooning and suspicious at the same time.

The mystery plotline is SO well done. You think you know where it’s going... but surprise! You don’t. Even when I guessed something right, it twisted in a way that still caught me off guard.

📌 Heads up: There are a few steamy scenes (definitely not closed-door) and the pacing toward the end got a little wobbly. I could’ve done with a slightly tighter conclusion, but honestly, I was too emotionally invested to care much.

If you love romantic suspense with deep emotional threads, small-town secrets, and a heroine you can root for—add this to your TBR yesterday.

This was a decent thriller but the characters were so annoying I really want to hate it. I think the mystery tied itself up nicely at the end, but was a little predictable. I do wish the author could make up their mind between a romance and a thriller or could figure out a way to make this more cohesive because at times it was all over the place. It was not terrible though and I think there will be people out there who love it.

Yes, this book was a great one! It kept u on ur toes and you didn’t want to put it down! Highly recommend

I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading late into the night. It had my heart breaking one moment and left me completely stunned the next. Absolutely mind-blowing twist!

Quick mystery with a little bit of spice (almost not YA?). River loses both parents in separate tragic accidents and then receives an anonymous two million dollar donation. Was her dad murdered? Where is her mom? Who donated the money?

You will get answers, more questions, and MORE ANSWERS! The book had me hooked from the beginning and had multiple plot twists throughout. I couldn’t have guessed the ending. The author also does a great job of tying up all of the loose ends and connecting all of the dots. I would have liked a little more character development and sleuthing but prefer the length more.

This is a half-assed double murder mystery-slash-thriller wrapped in the angsty and dramatic life of a teenager, delivered at times like YA women's fiction and at others a romance. This book wanted to be ALLLLL the genres, and it was supremely annoying. Also there was a love triangle, which was supremely annoying as well. I wanted to DNF this several times, but held out for the solution to the mystery. And when I realized my instincts about whodunit had been right from the beginning, it felt so lame. Harlow did a great job building it up and making it seem super dark and complex, and it really wasn't. Also, Logan's POV was superfluous. If it had been a true dual-POV romance, it would have been more useful, but not necessary with the focus always on River. These books that can't decide which genre they want to fit in drive me nuts, because the story is inevitably unfocused and the execution messy.

And I don't care if books suggest teenagers have sex; that's just reality. And I've read my share of erotic new adult romances. But while the teenagers here weren't minors, with all the emphasis on parents and school life, they felt like children. So it felt pretty icky to experience their sexploits in graphic detail. Skipped that.

Overall, not to my taste. I had hoped for more sleuthing and less Romeo and Juliet.

First, a moment for the cover. It is alluring and beautiful and dark. I absolutely love when books and their covers make sense together. Now, onto the book itself. The story line of this book was a little dark and thrilling with steamy romance. Although it was a little steamy, I wouldn’t consider this book to be smutty, so don’t go into thinking this is a dark romance with loads of smut. I would definitely say it’s more YA than anything. The story was captivating. With the twists and turns I never wanted it to end. It was definitely fast paced and I love that in these types of genres. No part was really stagnant for me. This book was raw, heartbreaking, and filled with grief. I definitely felt several emotions reading this book! I would definitely check this out if you’re into thriller romance!

Contemporary Fiction/Thriller - 3.5*

River Santos is not having a good year. Her mother left for a hike and hasn't been seen for months, her father was just killed in an apartment fire, she barely escaped with her life. The love of her life broke up with her without any explanation. She works in a diner and lives with her aunt in a run-down apartment despite having been given an anonymous 2 million dollars through a GoFundMe account. Nothing makes sense and River cannot seem to move on with her life. She keeps waiting for her mother to show back up and doesn't want to move or change so that when her mother does show back up, she can be easily found.

If she didn't have her aunt and her best friend Tawny, she doesn't know how she would get through it all. Tawny and River work together at the diner, they have another co-worker Logan, who they barely interact with. Something changes when the diner caters a party for some local bigwigs. Logan shows River that he does have a personality, and she draws closer to him. The more she learns about him, the more questions from her past arise. Who is telling the truth?

The storyline kept me engaged and I liked all the characters, but they feel a little juvenile, so this book feels more YA. There are some discordant notes with the plotting and when I ran across them it took me out of the story. The other big hangup for me was that other than Logan and River being beautiful, they don't really connect on another level and some of their dialogue is cringey.

All in all - a good book. Colleen Hoover fans will enjoy this novel.

This is a case where I think there was too much going on and yet there was so many times that it felt repetitive and even more that the author wasn’t exactly sure which genre she was going for so she wrote a bunch of elements in which kind of muddied the waters for me and messed with the pacing as well. There were no red herrings- everything was laid out so conveniently which was disappointing. Maybe because I don’t read a lot of YA and this is typical I’m not sure but it sure did feel anticlimactic.
Maybe I’m just not the target audience for this one, while I can see how this might be thoroughly entertaining for some, that wasn’t the case for me unfortunately. It wasn’t a total loss, but I feel like it didn’t live up to the potential.

River Santos is stuck. Her father died in a house fire. All of her possessions burned to the ground. She's working a dead end job at the town diner. Her mother has seemingly vanished for nearly a year. To top it off, her ex-boyfriend stomped on her heart, and the guy at work is always on her nerves. The only people she has are her aunt and her best friend.

But then she suddenly finds herself in an unexpected attraction, and with that, a whole tangle of secrets that throws her world completely inside out.

I absolutely was hooked on this synopsis, and had high hopes for this book, only to find it to be not just YA fiction, but very much YA. There's a lack of chemistry between River and Logan and the plot as it unfolds remains surface level through and through. While it can be geared toward young adult audiences, I don't think YA books need to sacrifice quality in a story unfolding because of that, and this one unfortunately did. Overall, a 3 star rating for a twist at the end that I only saw coming right before the reveal.

I loved this book and read it in one day. I had to know what was going to happen!! I loved the characters and the storyline. I thought the characters had great growth. I would definitely recommend this book.

How can a romance come out of such a tragic back story? I don't know, but this author definitely did that. This gave me all the feels.
