Maverick Sheriff is a contemporary Western set in rural Texas. Sheriff Cooper McKinnon lost his wife and son in a flood two years ago. He also lost part of his family as a child when his mother moved away with his sisters, leaving Cooper and his brothers with their father.

This is a book of loss and coping, not necessarily of healing. That makes for a lot of drama and heartache as well as mysterious vendettas. There are adversaries and wounds that just won't heal.

When the town's assistant district attorney decides to open a cold-case file against Cooper's mother, it brings together many stories and subplots that intersect. At the center of it all is Cooper's lost child and the child ADA Jessa has. Are these two children actually the same child? And if so, why does someone want Cooper, Jessa, and the child dead?

I couldn't put this book down once I started it. It's part contemporary Western, part romance, and part crime drama. There were twists and turns in the story that I didn't see coming. Cooper's family will do anything for him and Jessa will do anything for her son. Then there is the mysterious stalker — what is he or she after and how far will they go to get what they want? That sets up a real page-turner that I enjoyed tremendously and recommend to other romance readers.
