Thank you to the author, Amazon Crossing Kids and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My apologies for the delay in posting, I have had continuing familial health challenges to contend with in the past months.
This children's book is a translation of an award-winning Spanish book, which tells the story of the simple and yet deep bond between a grandfather and grandchild. Dining outside by the light of a lantern every night, telling stories - and on the night of a full moon they set out to meet the moon, travelling through the forest, encountering night creatures. This tribute to adventures together is perfectly complemented by the wonderful illustrations - a great book to read together.

I have always loved children's books because we could peek inside the magical and whimsical imagination of children. Or how they simplified confusing things that adults do. This book gave me this, and a heartwarming bond between a child and his grandfather.

How to Reach the Moon is a beautifully 'illustrated book of a young boy enjoying fantastical stories with his grandfather. This is a cozy story to share with littles and grandparents alike.

How to Reach the Moon is a beautiful book that celebrates the bond between a grandfather and his grandchild. With its gentle pacing and unhurried storyline, the book invites readers to slow down, explore nature, and savor its quiet magic. Few picture books capture the wonder of the natural world at night, and this one truly stands out.
After dinner, the grandfather and child set off on an imaginative adventure. Together, they devise a plan to reach the moon—without using a rocket. How do they do it? Discover the answer in this charming and heartwarming story.

I am so glad to be able to showcase books in translation in this space. The original Spanish edition: Cómo llegar a la luna, of How To Reach the Moon, was a 2022 New York Public Library Best Book in Spanish.
It is easy to see why: the great friendship between Emilio and Abuelo (grandpa) is such a joy, and their mutual understanding can help them even reach the moon itself.
Emilio enjoys his vacation in the forest at his abuelo’s house. They dine outside by the light of a lantern every night, and tell stories.
On a clear full moon night, Abuelo suggests they meet her. But how? How is it to travel across the forest, looking at night creatures, and where does the journey end?
A loving tribute to adventures and nighttime outside screens, the ending will make you want to reach the moon, as grandfather and grandson did.

It's been a while since I read a children's book like this, and I'm glad I did. This was a very short and sweet story. The bond between the grandfather and the boy was so sweet. Props to the illustrator as well. The storybook style illustration and the color palette were absolutely cozy and perfect for this kind of book.

🌙 and the moon, of course! 🌙
What a wholesome and delightful story about a grandfather and his grandson, Emilio, indulging in adventures that stretch the imagination. The illustrations are just as magical as the story.
"Emilio, would you like to meet the moon?" And then I'll be darned if his abuelo doesn't find a way to get him there.
I dare say Emilio has the coolest grandfather EVER.

I received an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.
This is the wonderful story of young Emilio visiting his abuelo's house in the county for the summer and the wondrous adventures of imagination that see them share stories, trek through the woods as animals, and plunge into the waters of the moon.
The pencil shaded art is so expressive and full of character and the writing is filled with cozy, imaginative goodness.
This is something special.

Emilio and Abuelo: two adventurers off to see the moon! Emilio loves spending vacations out in the forest at his abuelo's house. Abuelo and Emilio dine outside by the light of a lantern every night. Emilio can’t wait for Abuelo to tell his fantastical stories! One night, when there's a full moon, Abuelo suggests they go and meet the moon. At first, Emilio isn't sure he's serious--but Abuelo is a true adventurer! And so the two, boy and grandfather, set off on their mission. But what creatures might await them in the forest? And will they really get to see the moon?
I loved this story! The story is great. Illustrations are perfect in this picture book. It shows a sweet relationship between the boy and his grandfather.

A look at the whimsical smarts of an old man, who entertains his grandson in the middle of nowhere each evening, and ends up promising to take him to the moon that hangs over them both. It's best I say nothing else about the plot – just highlight the really strong artwork, which captures the gloomy woods and the characters' environment very well indeed. The text is fine, and the story is certainly worth a read, if not quite grabbing enough to demand re-reads, but if anything the thing succeeds just because it highlights the older person's imagination, when such books usually foreground the dreams and inventions of the children. And I'm not sure if that distinction is actually enough. That said, this is better than a three and a half star read, so four it is.

I know i’m not the target audience but i think it’s a beautiful tale and I would use it if I could.
“Abuelo, is it true that the moon has a face we never see?” Emilio asks.
“The moon has many faces!” Abuelo answers.
“Sometimes I look at the moon and see the face of your abuela. Sometimes I see my own face as a child, when i was your age. And other times I see the face of the Earth, as if the moon were a mirror that the Earth looks into as it test ready for bed”.

This book captures the simple, profound connection between grandparent and grandchild with a narrative that feels both timeless and deeply personal. The language is gentle yet vivid, creating a slow, comforting rhythm that mirrors the hush of a forest at night. Wholesome, witty details—like a belly so big it moved up and down when he laughed—hooked me right from the start. Emilio’s initial scepticism is natural, and his growing trust in Abuelo mirrors how children often step cautiously into the unknown, buoyed by the unwavering faith of a loved one.
The familial storytelling resonates with readers young and old, evoking memories of tales once told by their own grandparents. Abuelo’s character transcends borders, embodying the essence of every beloved grandfather.
The illustrations are particularly noteworthy. The muted earth tones, soft textures, and warm glows evoke a nostalgic feel, instantly transporting readers into the serene beauty of rural nights in the forest. The art complements the text perfectly, offering layers of emotional depth and visual storytelling that make the book as much a delight to look at as it is to read.

This was such a sweet read and I thouroughly enjoyed the illustrations and the attention to detail!
The story of this children's book follows Emilio and his Abuelo, as they adventure together through beautifully depicted nature in search of the moon. The book felt so whimsical and enchanting, and left me feeling a sense of warmth. I loved how the relationship between Emilio and his grandfather was depicted and how the story can show readers, both yound and old, what is possible in the realm of imagination.

Thank you Netgalley for the earc of this book.

Oh how this made me miss my beloved grandfathers; they were storytellers, each in their own way, and my childhood/teen years were immeasurably richer because of their influence in my life. I was blessed to live with my maternal grandparents from the age of 10 until the age of 16 and those were some of the best years of my life and I am forever grateful for their love and generosity towards my mother, sister, and I.
It also made me miss my time in Brazil; I had never known stars and the moon could be so bright or look like you could touch them if you just reached high enough. It was a glorious time and this book brought all that back to me as well.
This gorgeously illustrated book is about a small boy spending the summer with his beloved Abuelo [grandfather]. They spend the days enjoying the land, they eat outside, and at night, Abuelo tells the boy fantastical stories. One night they go looking for the moon [because Abuelo tells the boy that he can introduce him to the moon!!] and an amazing late-night adventure ensues.
A beautiful, heartfelt story that both children and their readers will love and will want to read again and again. I absolutely loved this one!!
