I really did enjoy this book and was glad I got to read it early. I will be recommending it to my book club.

Ooooh I loved this book. I was cackling, swooning, giggling, screaming while reading it. It was soooo much fun and I just LOVE a workplace-rivals-who-accidentally-communicate-somehow-and-fall-in-love-without-knowing-it trope. It’s giving She Loves Me (the musical) in the best way. The pacing was perfect, the story line was great, and I loved all the side characters. I also love when people LOVE their jobs so that was a really fun element to explore as well.

Thank you so much to NetGalley & Avon for this e-ARC. all opinions are my own :)

While I really enjoyed the premise of this story (workplace rivals, a woman in a man's field, secret identity pen pal), I did not feel like the execution was particularly well done. The writing style was difficult to get into, but I got used to it as time went on. The story crammed so many tropes and plot devices in, that it overall lacks depth and real character development. The final conflict was also really frustrating. It's an easy and light-hearted read that could have been a lot more impactful if some of the key plotlines were more fully fleshed out. Thank you to Avon and NetGalley for an ARC to read and review.

Very much “you got mail” vibes. This is sweet, entertaining, and heartwarming! I wholeheartedly recommend.

I felt like this book was so much fun right out the gate. I smiled and laughed at so many parts. All the characters had so much personality, the chemistry between the two love interests was great, the slow burn was so worth it in the end (and I'm usually not a fan of slow burns). The banter and flirting between the love interests had me blushing. This book did have a Third Act that didn't feel random or dragged out!

When I first started Last Night Was Fun, I expected a fun, sweet read, what I did not expect was the feeling of being utterly besotted by this book. I laughed, I screamed, I fell in love with the story of Emmy and Gabe.

Emmy and Gabe are rivaling colleagues who work in data analysis for a professional baseball team. Both are vying for the same promotion, so tensions are extra high. Luckily they have their respective mystery texter to talk to, talks that lead to a meet up that lead to the reveal their mystery texter is each other. Dun dun dun!

The miscommunication featured at the beginning of this story had me LIVING!!! It’s literal miscommunication as Emmy’s phone number is given as a fake to her mystery texter after he asks for a girl’s number.. Mystery texter (dubbed by Emmy as Axe Murderer) and Emmy (dubbed by Axe as Bird Girl) end up building conversation behind the anonymity their texting offers. It’s clear as day to the reader Gabe is on the other side of said texts, but there is such satisfaction watching both carry on unaware for an extended period of time. Emmy is so smitten by her Axe Murderer, their chemistry over texts is insane! Their meeting feels like destiny! And it’s no surprise when they take the jump to meet in person...only to realize who was on the side of the line.

What I appreciated about this moment is that the reveal does not come too early. The author allows us to appreciate the camaraderie, banter, and heart-opening talks that Bird Girl and Axe Murderer share, without realizing their real life history. Although they keep a level of their private lives guarded, their emotional walls are down as they freely express how they are feeling to one another. Building trust and blossoming a feeling teasing something a lot like love. This foundation is much needed upon the big reveal for it is a foundation far too study to simply turn one's back to. Emmy is forced to consider her feelings past resentment towards Gabe as she now knows he’s the Axe Murderer who made her heart flutter in a way never experienced. In their real life setting, we witness the bickering and poking between Emmy and Gabe, but we also become privy to how obvious their chemistry is in the face of their continual obliviousness. Their physical connection becomes unknowingly strengthened by their emotional connection over their digital line. We get moments where Emmy feels softened towards her arch-nemesis and see him, in turn, do the same, and it leads back to the bond being forged by Bird Girl and Axe Murderer.

Their love story is absolutely the heart of this tale, and it’s one so gorgeously paced, so perfectly electric in chemistry, and so lovingly bonded through both emotional and physical connection.

Now there is something that occurs in the third act that riled me up! As I read it I was wishing it hadn’t happened the way it did, it felt like one too many steps back in the gorgeous progress in the relationship between Emmy and Gabe. I was admittedly frustrated, and yet– and yet!-- I was absolutely squealing and giggling over that final obstacle’s resolution. It reminded me of the movie Never Been Kissed in the very best way! My frustration gave way to a heart soaring the skies. Turns out that prickly moment became a beautiful set up!

This book is an utter delight, it snuck up on me, thoroughly capturing my heart, and it will absolutely have a space saved on my shelves upon release.

Thank you kindly to Avon and NetGalley for this advanced complimentary copy, I leave this honest review voluntarily. 4.5

What a fun rom-com! I loved every second of this multi-trope romance. It has hidden identities, workplace romance, destination wedding, and baseball. It is an easy, fun read, which is what I like in a rom-com. Emmy is a likable, driven FMC in a male-dominated field of baseball analytics. She is a workaholic, dealing with the grief of losing her older brother, as well as helping plan her sister’s upcoming wedding in Mexico. She needs a date to this wedding, and decides to ask the person she’s been texting with after a wrong number turned texting friendship. At the same time, she’s up for a promotion at work against her work nemesis, Gabe. All this is interconnected, which we figure out before they do, but that is all part of the fun!

This is definitely one of the better books I have read recently, and I highly recommend it for a fun romance!

Thank you, NetGalley, Avon and Harper Voyager, and Holly Michelle (Holly James) for an advanced digital copy of this book.

When a random text turns into one of the best unexpected surprises for Emmy Jameson what will she do when she discovers their true identity?

A story that takes workplace rivals, forced proximity, one bed, and a slow burn and delivers a fun spin on sports romance.

If you loved Moneyball and The Hating Game then you'll love this new read!

Would you do anything if you found your person?

Last Night Was Fun is exactly what the title promises—light, sweet, and full of charming moments. Holly Michelle delivers a feel-good romance with lovable characters and just the right touch of humor and heart. The chemistry between the leads and the breezy writing style made this a delightful read. Perfect for a cozy night in when you’re craving a cute escape

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a rom-com that genuinely made me kick my feet! You’ve Got Mail is one of my favorite movies and fake dating/epistolary are some of my favorite tropes so of course this book would resonate so well with me. I liked both main characters and didn’t find much fault with the storyline either. I liked learning about a lot of the behind the scenes stats stuff regarding baseball (I had no idea!) I do think this book would translate brilliantly to screen one day too. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the e-arc!

"Last night was fun."

A simple text from an unknown number. A moment of digital serendipity. And just like that, Emmy Jameson finds herself at the heart of an accidental conversation that becomes anything but ordinary.

When a bar-goer sends a text to the woman he met the night before, the exchange is less than ideal. He quickly realizes he's been handed a fake number; his misdial leads him straight to Emmy. What we, as readers, know is that Emmy and Gabe are far from strangers.

Emmy is a statistical and analytics all-star striving to stand out in the "boy's club" of Major League Baseball. Gabe Olson is a former pitching star whose future in the majors fizzled following a car accident and career-ending injury. Work days are contentious as Emmy and Gabe compete for the same starting line-up promotion to Senior Analyst.

Outside of the office, Emmy and Gabe (or Bird Girl and Axe Murderer as they are known to one another over text) share more and more messages that grow warmer, funnier, and undeniably addictive.

Predictable? Absolutely. Did I see every twist coming? Without a doubt. Did I care? Not. One. Bit.

I was entirely captivated by this flirty, fun, and fantastic rom-com! Last Night Was Fun features exceptional scene-setting and character-building by author Holly Michelle. The slow-burn sizzled right up until the spark finally ignited. In baseball terms, this book is a grand slam.

What a fun read. The chemistry between Emmy & Gabe was off the chart. Really enjoyed the baseball aspect of the story. Really enjoyed it.

Cute love story! Loved the characters and the mystery. I don't love sports, but do love a sports themed romance

I really wanted to love this book. I started it and put it down a few times. It just didn’t pull me in and I didn’t like all of the side characters. This one just wasn’t for me.

If you love a good mix of workplace rivalry and unexpected romance, Last Night Was Fun delivers exactly that. Emmy is a data analyst vying for a promotion, but there’s one problem—she has to compete against her coworker Gabe, who happens to be her least favorite person in the office. Meanwhile, an accidental text from a stranger sparks an online connection that slowly turns into something more. As their conversations deepen, Emmy finds herself drawn to this mystery man, leading her to take a leap of faith and invite him to her sister’s wedding.

While the setup echoes elements from The Hating Game and You've Got Mail, the story still feels fresh and fun. Emmy and her mystery texter share some fantastic banter, making their growing relationship feel authentic and heartwarming.

I also appreciated how the book tackled Emmy’s struggles as a woman working in a male-dominated field. The author subtly weaves in the challenges of proving her expertise, adding depth to the story without overshadowing the romance.

My only gripe? The third-act breakup felt unnecessary—it didn’t really add much to the emotional weight of the story and could have easily been left out.

That said, Last Night Was Fun is a charming, lighthearted read that leaves you with a warm, satisfied feeling. A great choice for anyone who enjoys smart dialogue, workplace tension, and a romance that unfolds in unexpected ways.

Thank you Netgalley, Avon and Harper Voyager for the opportunity to review this ARC!

Very fun, cute rom-com. The slight twist in the enemy to lovers troupe was clever and the banter was witty and engaging. Definitely a fun read for the summer.

This book was so fun!!! It had me giggling, kicking my feet & smiling like an idiot.

I generally don’t enjoy open door romance and wasn’t aware this book included explicit scenes going in. That said, the steamy content doesn’t appear until later in the story (Chapters 15,16 & 18). I still really liked the characters and their chemistry—I just wish I’d known about the spice going in.
There are also mentions of grief, addiction, and the death of a sibling.

Thank you netgalley for the eArc in exchange for my review!

I had a lot of fun reading this book! It definitely has “You’ve Got Mail” movie vibes. It made me feel hopeful and lighthearted. It is easy to read, has a clear thesis and was well executed. It has strong character development and came with lovable characters! This book is a slow burn, work together rivals romance. It flowed well and caught my attention right from the very beginning! It is about competition and ambition and the struggle of having a work-life balance. This book made me giggle a lot! The tension between the two main characters is very strong!

“Last Night Was Fun” is about woman named Emmy, who is a data analyst for a baseball team. Emmy says no to dating and wants to concentrate on her work. She is the only female data analyst that works there, so she is really wanting to prove herself. Emmy begins to start text flirting with a mystery guy in her phone, and realizes she finds comfort in doing this. Then there is a guy named Gabe who works with Emmy! A senior analyst position comes up and both Gabe and Emmy want that position in their workplace. Emmy ends up getting a text message saying last night was fun. Both Emmy and Gabe (also known as mystery man to her) start texting back and forth to each other and there seems to be an instant connection. So when they find out who is on the other side of the phone, things start becoming a mess! But will they be able to move past their rivalry and become lovers? I rate this a 4.25 out of 5 stars!

Content warnings include death and grief.

Thank you to NetGalley, author Holly Michelle and Avon and Harper Voyager | Avon for this digital advanced reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This book is expected to be published on June 10, 2025!

After just the first chapter, I already knew this was going to be very fun to read. I loved the banter and chemistry and the swoony moments throughout. Emmy made for a relatable point of view character and I cheered for her all the way to the end. I enjoyed how she and her parents had a loving and supportive relationship and that her family played an important part of the plot. Gabe was a good surprise and just like Emmy, I hesitated to trust his true intentions when he also had so much on the line for his career. I felt so connected to Emmy and as she let Gabe know more about herself, I felt her vulnerability.

Overall, I found this had to put down and couldn't wait to get back to it in the evenings. I already know I'm buying this author's previous novels and will be seeking more in the future. Thank you to Netgalley for my e-ARC for review.
