This book started out SO strong. It’s actually the second book about mysterious texting while employed by a baseball team (the Art of Catching Feelings) that I’ve read recently. And I remember thinking when I first started, that this book was better than the other. Once the two main characters realized they were falling for each other, i think i got a little lost. The plot got wayyy over complicated and it got ruined a bit by the end by a simple miscommunication. Overall, highly readable and cute - perfect for a beach read this summer. But a lot could have been improved!

Emmy’s life is turned upside down when she receives a random text from an unknown number saying “last night was fun.” However, Emmy wasn’t the intended recipient, and realizes the man texting her was given a wrong number. They both take it in stride and a real connection begins to form between them, even though they don’t know each other’s true identities. When Emmy needs a date for her sisters wedding though, she asks mystery man to accompany her.

Emmy also has a pretty cool job running data analytics for a baseball team, and she has an opportunity to get a promotion to continue doing what she loves. Unfortunately, her arch nemesis/coworker, Gabe, is also vying for the same position. To top it all off, Gabe just so happens to be Mr. Wrong Number that Emmy’s been texting, and she’s now heading to her sister’s wedding with a man she loathes. Or does she?

This was a cute rom-com that was easy to read and get into. Even though the plot twists and storyline was easy to predict it was still a fun read. One of my issues with this book was the pacing. If felt a little choppy to me. I also would’ve loved to see more of the build up between Gabe and Emmy once they realize each other’s identities because I feel like it all just happened super fast. I also could’ve done without the miscommunication at the end, but I did enjoy the uniqueness of Emmy’s grand gesture.

Overall, this was a cute read that I’d recommend.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A fun, quick romance story set in the world of baseball.

Emmy receives a text one night and starts replying to it - she tells the person she isn't the right recipient but they both keep texting and soon she's hooked. In the real world, she's fighting her workplace nemesis for a higher position and finding it frustrating. And dealing with her sister's upcoming destination wedding - and trying to find her plus one. It's a funny story, great banter, loved the texting theme and the characters are great.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.

One of my favorite rom-com tropes is the “enemies to lovers” trope. The Hating Game is at the very top of my list of favorite books with the trope. Last Night was Fun by Holly Michelle is compared to The Hating Game with “You’ve Got Mail” vibes. While I agree with the comparison, Last Night was Fun was just an okay book.

The beginning of the book was a fun read (if you can put aside the very unlikely premise that a fake phone number given to a guy at a bar happened to be the guy’s co-worker). I enjoyed the text banter between the two main characters, who were both fairly likeable. It all came apart for me in the third-act with a miscommunication, followed by a break-up. While reading the book, I kept wondering if the author was going to go with this trope (my least favorite) and how sad I would be if she did. Well, what could have been a solid-four star book became a barely three-star book for me. It’s a shame.

A texting mishap leads to a new friend for a female baseball stats analysis competing for a promotion. Do we know almost the whole time who she’s texting? Yes. It’s a romance book. It’s not a tough guess. Knowing is what makes it fun.

I finished this book within a 12 hour window—staying way too late reading 90% of it, and finishing it the next morning. It was a very fast and quite delightful.

I really enjoyed Emmy’s story. The love story was lovely and she was able to work through traumas from her past. I do wish the mystery texter had been more of a mystery because it felt like the story was telling me who it was quite obviously but she (nor he) picked up on it. I think that part based on how it was written would been more believable if at least one of them had guessed it. Otherwise it needed a bit more mystery on who the texter was. This is the big reason for three stars. I enjoyed the love story, and other than the lack of mystery I enjoyed the book!

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyage for a digital ARC of Last Night Was Fun.

I really wanted to like this. I loved the premise, but the execution wasn't there. At first I thought I couldn't get into because it's written in third person, but I pushed through until 44% and had to call it quits. Not enough interiority. I don't care about the FMC. And it was all tell, no show. I think this author just isn't for me.

Everyone gets annoying texts that are spam trying to sell you something but what about a text that says "Last night was fun." Yet you didn't do anything last night so wrong number? Sure. I could ignore it and delete or respond to say sorry, you were given a wrong number. The second option is exactly what Emmy goes after receiving that text. This one action begins a chain of texts with someone she really connects with which is a good thing since her dating life isn't quite as active. Working as a data analyst for a baseball team during the day, Emmy can't quite relate or bond with her coworkers as well. Feeling as if she has to work harder than everyone else being a female in a male-dominated field, Emmy is up for a promotion against who else, her arch nemesis at work. Although things aren't always what they seem to be as Emmy and Gabe start bonding over small things as much as it annoys her, she also welcomes it.

Last Night Was Fun was a cute story that is a quick read. Although quite predictable on who the mystery texter is in the first 25% of the book (if not sooner), it was a good read to find out where the story would go with a surprising but pleasant ending. I do recommend this book especially if you like the rivals to lovers genre.

Thank you to Netgalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you Holly Michelle for this book. I really enjoyed it.

Thank you, NetGalley and Avon, for providing the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Gabe and Emmy work for the same baseball team in the same data analyst department. They hate each other with passion and always compete. When a chance of promotion appears, they both try to one-up one another.
At the same time, Emmy receives a text from an unknown number, and she and the stranger start texting every day. And when she realizes she needs a date for her sister's wedding, Emmy leaps at the chance.
But things grow complicated when the stranger she falls for turns out to be Gabe.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it was well-written, emotional, with mostly well-rounded characters and a compelling story; on the other, Emmy irritated me in the first half, and I almost didn't finish the book. And the grand gesture at the end had me cringe.

Her "woe is me, it's so hard being a woman" complains and constant use of the phrase "Boys Town" was really irritating, the fact that she hides her femininity by choice and she constantly whines about how she can't werar hills or dresses to work - even though her female boss proves to ehr every day that she does and she can, had been irritating and annoying. Emmy sounded more like a whiny child most of the time, as if her "I work in the men's field" was her entire personality.

She got better, thankfully. We got to see her being an amazing sister and friend, and someone with ambitions and drive to make her reality come true. She finally believed in herself, and guess what? Turns out she was always part of the team. She just had to open her eyes.

Gabe has been a fantastic character since the beginning. Infuriating and handsome, I loved how much he loved Emmy from the beginning. I also loved how accepting and open he was to their connection. And I loved how they kept meeting each other.

I enjoyed the book for the most part, and I cried at a few scenes as well. But the ending wasn't for me - the grand gesture felt really out of character, and the third act breakup seemed to be there only for drama's sake, while it didn't really bring anything to the story.

I loved this book! The texting banter was so cute and the characters had chemistry in both texts and in the real world. I loved the workplace setting and thought her job was so interesting. The miscommunication was a bit over the top but I guess it had to be for a fantastic, Never Been Kissed type of a grand gesture ending!

In Last Night Was Fun, a guy got a fake number from a woman in a bar and as a result, texted a random woman. Except they hit it off. And that same woman has an arch nemesis at work who seems to get all the breaks since he is a man. Can you see where this is going? A little You’ve Got Mail action.
This book wa pure fluffy fun. Witty banter over texts, a swoony romance, giggly moments, a woman taking a stand at work in a field dominated by men and some good old fashioned enemies to lovers situation. It is the perfect summer read.

This book is a total home run—sharp, swoony, and full of heart.

Emmy Jameson is a smart, driven heroine you can’t help but root for, and her chemistry with Gabe crackles both on the page and through the screen. I loved the enemies-to-lovers setup mixed with the mistaken identity twist—it brought a fun, modern edge to a classic romantic trope. Their banter is quick and clever, and the deeper emotional moments hit just as hard.

The backdrop of professional baseball added a fresh layer to the story, especially with Emmy constantly proving herself in a male-dominated field. The destination wedding plot gave just the right amount of romantic escapism, too.

Perfect for fans of witty rom-coms with emotional depth. I couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end!

I have to say that this was such a breath of fresh air. Yes, this is a love story, but it is more than a love love story. It is a book about friendship and how two people really get to know each other before they even actually know that they know each other.

It starts out that Emmy gets a text from a number that she doesn't know and she starts talking to the guy on the other end of the texts. As it turns out he was left with a phone number from a girl the night before. It was obvious that she wrote the wrong phone number down. Anyway, the two of them talk and get to know each other for quite a while. Her name is Bird Girl and his name is Axe Murderer. Is he or isn't he? Only time will tell!

Mean time Emmy goes about her life and her work. That is what Emmy lives for, work! She learned after her last relationship that she had no room in her life for anyone else, she was in love with her job. Plus, she was her sisters maid of honor. Goodness knows she had a lot to do for that job. Such as giving her the perfect bachelorette party. Along with all the other jobs her dear sister may assign to her between now and her wedding in Mexico. The first thing she has been driving her crazy about is getting a date to bring with her.

Now that she has Axe Murderer in her life maybe she will ask him. If she is brave enough.

I am going to leave things here because I don't want to give anything away. Trust me if you want an easy breezy summer read this is your book!

I loved this modern sporty take on You've Got Mail! The chemistry between Gabe and Emmy (and Ax Murderer and Bird Girl) leaped off the page and it was a blast watching it all come together. I love Holly Michelle/Jame's voice and will read anything that she writes!

I was not expecting to love this book as I did. The premise of a wrong number text turning into a flirty back and forth seemed like a fun, light read. But there was so much heart and emotional depth in this book that genuinely surprised me. Emmy’s relationships and conversations with her parents and sister in relation to her late brother will make you cry.

And Gabe. Gabe Olson, the man that you are. The perfect book boyfriend. And I almost didn’t like the guy in the beginning, but he so quickly redeemed himself by being sweet and funny and having so much more to him that Emmy saw on the surface. Their chemistry was amazing, and I was practically cheering when they finally gave in to the tension.

Honestly can’t recommend this book enough

This was so cute!! I really loved the STEM aspect of sports, I don’t see it too often and as someone who loves sports statistics, I thought this was a lot of fun! Emmy and Gabe were adorable, I loved how obvious the author made it that it was Gabe and I think that made it better! Their messages to each other were super cute and had me giggling, I love them!!

I’m also a big fan of the anonymous texting/mistaken identity trope and I loved how it didn’t drag on for most of the book and they figured it out.

I did want to knock some sense into Emmy sometimes, especially at the beginning with her coworkers, sometimes men are just clueless, bestie, it happens lol.

Thank you Avon and Harper Voyager and NetGalley for the ARC!

This book was everything I wanted and more. I am a romance-reading, introverted baseball fan and this book was exactly the type of thing I fall in love with. Both characters were adorable, and the slow burn of the love story was *chef's kiss*. I am buying this book for my shelf immediately.

Thank you again for the ARC!

Holly James is easily becoming one of my favorite romance authors. I read the Arc for Name Your Price also and I cannot wait to read more of her books!

The FMC, Emma, has worked her whole career to fit into a profession dominated by the male population. She is finally up for a promotion to become the lead sports data analyst, but she is going head-to-head with Gabe for the promotion. Gabe is rumored to be ruthless due to some office rumors. One night while she is relaxing at home she receives a text message from a random number, but what she doesn't realize is that she is about to fall head-over heels for her work nemesis. Will their relationship continue to flourish or will the promotion get in the way?

This is the perfect book for summer! Some of the story takes place in a remote location for Emma's sister Piper's destination wedding where Emma and Gabe have to share one bed. It had me giggling and kicking my feet, the tension was HOT. Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and Holly James for allowing me the chance to read the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!
