Thank you to NetGalley, Avon and Harper Voyager, and Holly Michelle for an e-ARC of Last Night Was Fun

Emmy Jameson, a data analyst for a pro baseball team, lives by strict rules: no dating, no personal talk at work, and baseball first. She’s thrown off when a flirty mystery texter turns out to be Gabe Olson, her work rival who she is competing with for a promotion. Now, with her sister’s wedding approaching, they must navigate their rivalry and unexpected connection to figure out what’s real.

I love an early 2000s rom-com and let me tell you: Last Night Was Fun brings the 2000s rom-com to modern day. One of my favorite movies is You’ve Got Mail so obviously the synopsis pulled me in from the beginning. I feel like this book was super underrated and I’m glad that I am finally seeing it get hyped up in the way it should be.

I lived for the moment when Bird Girl and Axe Murderer realizes who they are speaking to because there were times when it was SO obvious! Emmy and Gabe have a rivalry built on their own desires to prove themselves, but also assumptions. They never really get to know each other in-person, but texting brings them together and they realize that they have off the charts chemistry.

I love their love and I need all of my 2000s rom-com obsessed girlies to read this! Really, REALLY can’t wait to see what Holly Michelle writes next!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon/Harper Voyager for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Emmy Jameson is the only female data analyst for a Major League Baseball team in California. She lives for baseball and her job, and not for much else, so she will do anything to get a promotion at work as long as her rival Gabe Olson doesn’t get in her way. One night she gets a text from a mysterious number, which leads to a texting flirtationship she can’t seem to stay away from, despite knowing she needs to focus on her job and her sister’s upcoming wedding - which she still needs a date for. When she asks her mystery man to meet up, she is in for a surprise.

I loved this! Emmy and Gabe had great banter and the romance was so cute. I loved the deeper connections that were made from all of the characters, and how there was great pay off within the romance.

I think this had such a fun premise, and while being fairly predictable, it was written in a way that I found myself needing to pick up the book and inhale it. I definitely recommend this for a heartwarming, exciting romance, especially during beach read season.

Tropes:
Workplace
Rivals to Lovers
Forced Proximity
Only One Bed
STEM & Sports
Slow Burn

Single POV, 3rd person

Emmy is up for a promotion at work against her rival Gabe Olson and is dealing with the stress of finding a date for her sister’s wedding. Then she gets a wrong number text. Emmy, who has given up on dating, enjoys the anonymity of the texting relationship they form. She shares a lot of emotions and stories with the wrong number before finally deciding to meet up. She shows up to the meeting spot only to find that the wrong number texter is Gabe. Out of desperation, she stills invites him to the destination wedding with her. After that, they can’t deny their connection.

I loved these characters. Emmy is so relatable and real. She’s got real life issues, like her male dominated industry and family dynamics. It was easy to understand where she was coming fm on a lot of issues. Gabe is similar in that he’s dealing with stereotypes and failed connections. Getting to be part of their growth was amazing and I loved their chemistry. Strongly dislike a miscommunication moment, HOWEVER, it is resolved quickly. (But really Emmy, wtf??) Overall, thoroughly enjoyed this book and I will have to check out the authors backlist.

Thank you to NetGalley, Avon and Harper Voyager, and Holly Michelle for the chance to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

What a fun, partial episoltary (texts!!) giving You've Got Mail meets The Hating Game (as the blurbs promised!). I enjoyed this story immensely. It was low stakes, low stress, enjoyable romance with off the charts chemistry.

Both MCs backstories brought understandable trauma and hesitation to their positions. The ex going to the wedding? The AUDACITY! Sports and excel spreadsheet nerds alike will enjoy this too!

Omg this book was everything I wanted in a book, I don’t know how to describe how much I love this book 🫶

Okay we have Emmy Jameson doesn’t want anything to do with dating just work and her love for baseball, she is a data analyst for a professional baseball team, she works with guys and is trying to prove to them she belongs there.

But she revives a text from an unknown number with “Last night was fun” and just goes from there and she keeps texting this stranger and then inviting him to her sister’s wedding.

You have to read to find out how everything goes down 🫶

Thank you NetGalley and Avon

The "You've Got Mail" vibes in this brought me so much happiness. This is the third or fourth sports romance that I'm giving such a high rating for in such a short period. They are just so cute!!! This one was a bit different from the norm and i think that's why i enjoyed it so much. This was a fast paced read that left me wanting to see where Gabe and Emmy's relationship was going. I was not expecting the ending though and that's the only thing that disappointed me a little about this book. But overall i really did enjoy this and will look for more by this author.

I love you've got mail and the hating game was one of my first romances so with a combo like that, I couldn't wait to dive in!

And y'all this story did not disappoint! Emmy and Gabe, work place enemies, connect virtually when he gets a wrong number at a bar. Not knowing their slowly falling into the feels with each other, things are heating up both virtually and in real life competing for a promotion at work.

But then when she needs a date to her sister's destination wedding, she invites her pen pal, suggesting they meet up in person first before the weekend away, and they discover who the other person is, we realize there definitely is a very thin line between love and hate.

I would have loved a dual POV for this one, but all in all, plenty of banter, chemistry and adorable friendship moments that it had all the makings of your favorite 90s rom com!

Thank you Netgalley, and Avon, and Harper Voyager for the ARC in exchange for my review!

One of the most lighthearted reads of the summer! Emmy gets a text from a mysterious number saying “last night was fun”, but even after mentioning that it was the wrong number, she still ends up having conversations with the stranger on the other side. Little does Emmy know that the person on the other side is no other than her work nemesis Gabe, who is going after the same promotion she is for the MLB team she works for.

As someone who personally doesn’t watch baseball, I didn’t feel like I needed to understand baseball statistics so much to understand what was going on. I personally loved this FMC for being hardworking, a go getter, and grounded. And I absolutely loved reading about the rivalry and tension between the two main characters.

4.75 stars rounded up

I thoroughly enjoyed Last Night Was Fun! I was excited to read this as a baseball and San Diego fan. Plus, a solid romance book with the enemies to lovers trope, what could go wrong? Of course, a miscommunication throws the main characters off track for a little bit but it just adds to the overall drama in this sweet book! This is definitely a great book anytime, but certainly perfect for a beach or poolside read this summer.

Advanced reader copy provided by Avon and Harper Voyager and NetGalley but all opinions are my own.

This charming, breezy romance is perfect for those who enjoy a bit of angst and a surprising twist, minus the explicit scenes. Highly recommend!

This was a super cute rivals to lovers book! Work place romance, fake number, one bed and so much more. I am a sucker for a You’ve got Mail romance vibes and this one hit the nail!

Emmy is an analyst for baseball and competing with Gabe for a promotion in a man’s world. He’s constantly trying to overshadow her and take her ideas. But just because Emmy is a woman doesn’t mean she isn’t going to work her ass to beat him for this job.

As she learns about this opportunity she gets a random text from a stranger who was given a fake number. They continue to talk and feelings start to blossom! They let down their walls and open to one another. The pet names were fun! Bird Girl and Axe Murderer. After much hesitation they decide to meet and an unexpected turn of events happen when their identities are revealed.

Meanwhile Emmy and Gabe keep running into each other and weirdly to then start to form a friendship.

I thought it was fun and quick paced. I enjoyed it. And loved the cover. Thank you NetGalley and Avon books for the advanced reader copy!

I loved this! I'm a sucker for a story told with correspondence (letters, texts, etc.). I loved how vulnerable they were with each other when they had no idea who the other was. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to, and it's easiest to do so with a stranger.

Last Night was Fun by Holly Mitchell
Contemporary romance.
Emmy Jackson is an introvert. She doesn’t date because of a bad experience. She doesn’t share anything personal at work as the lone female in a team of four.
On a Saturday morning she receives a text from a wrong number. Clearly the person was ghosted with a fake number which just happened to be Emmy’s. What were the odds? Emmy’s calculation says astronomical. Impulsively she answers the text and it turns into a conversation that is comfortably flirty and ongoing. A little mystery is fun and they actually seem to have a lot in common.
When Emmy needs a date for her sister’s destination wedding, she’s convinced it’s time to meet her texting friend.

Today’s world says we should never answer a text we don’t know. Maybe we are missing out on something potentially special.
Does anyone still use an iPod? I still have one but it’s long since died. Emmy uses one for a play list for her sister’s bachelorette party. One of those little inconsistencies that will make me remember the story. Clever if intentional.

Enjoyable story of flirting, work, family and getting to know someone beyond the surface.
A cute romcom.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

I just had so much fun reading this book. A perfect getaway, beachy, summery read. Emmy works in baseball analytics, and has sworn off dating because her previous boyfriend made her choose between her job and love, and she chose her job. Emmy's nemesis at work, and the competitor for her promotion, is Gabe, a hot former baseball player with a nerd core. As the two of them spend work hours antagonizing each other, the end up having a secret text correspondence after Gabe accidentally texts her one night. Is this coincidence absurd? Absolutely. But is it really fun? YES YES YES. This book manages to get you to enjoy all the tropes. There's one bed at a hotel, enemies to lovers, sports romance, the whole shebang. I appreciated that the Emmy and Gabe found out about their identities in the middle of the book, and Holly Michelle didn't string them or us along for too long. It made the two of them getting together very satisfying. I didn't love the third act breakup because it made me look at Emmy differently, but the grand gestures in the book were quite sweet. Overall, I highly recommend this entertaining read.

Thank you NetGalley for the free digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I loved this book! This book was the lighthearted, summer read that I didn’t know I needed it!

This is my first time reading a book by this author. This author also goes by Holly James.

From the first few pages of this book, I fell in love with Emmy and Gabe aka Bird Girl and Ax Murderer! Emmy and Gabe work together as baseball statisticians and are up for the same promotion after having been work competitors and enemies for the last few years. Seemingly, Gabe always beats Emmy out of promotions and gets credit for things. Emmy doesn’t get credit for. Emmy talks about the frustration of being stuck in “boys town“, a workplace that is mostly men. Even though these two already know each other through work, they don’t really “know each other“.

Both Emmy and Gabe have difficulty talking to others and expressing who they are, talking about past traumas, etc. One night Gabe texts Emmy by accident thinking that she is someone he was talking to at a bar the night before. Someone gave him a fake number and it just so happens to be Emmy’s. Through text, Emmy and Gabe fall in love but are fearful to meet in real life and reveal their true identities. Eventually, Emmy decides to set up a real life meeting because she needs a date to her sister‘s wedding in Cancun and she decides to take a chance that the person she’s been falling in love with via text will be the right person in real life as well. Much to their surprise, Emmy and Gabe both show up at the meeting spot and eventually they figure out that they have been texting each other.

Emmy is immediately distressed to know that she has been so vulnerable with her work enemy, freaks out and runs away. With encouragement from her best friend, Emmy decides to go ahead with her intended plan to invite Ax Murderer to her sister’s wedding in Cancun. From there, the simmering under the surface chemistry turns into a full-fledged romance. When they return to the real world, Emmy, and Gabe, have to face all of the difficulties of being competitors at work and working in the same office.

This was a perfect enemies to lovers book. I really enjoyed Gabe‘s character. I enjoyed Emmy‘s character, except for toward the end of the book when she overreacted to something Gabe did and did not give him an opportunity to explain before she attempted to cut him out of her life.

As with all romances, these two find their way to a happy ending. I am giving this book 4 stars. At some points in the book, this was a 5+ stars for me, but the events that unfold toward the end downgraded it to a four star book for me overall.

This is a fabulous book! If you love romance, you must read it!

Oh, Emmy and Gabe. I absolutely LOVED this book! Enemies to lovers, the falling for each other over text message, the favor and one bed trope. It was just pure perfection. I loved the premise of Emmy being the only girl in a boys world, but the heart of why she chooses her career really touched me. I think the serious topic of addiction and how it affects every member of the family, even years later, was beautifully handled. Emmy and Gabe, I couldn't get enough. The banter at work, and then the connection built over text and then the meeting at Balboa Park - just everything. The finale and epilogue were simply a homerun! Thank you to Netgalley, author Holly Michelle and Avon and Haprer Voyager for this advanced reader copy.

“I’m in an exclusive fake number texting relationship already, so not looking anymore.”

Omg this was such a cute romcom! Such a great read to start the summer!

Emmy is a data analyst for a professional baseball team. It’s already hard enough being one of the only girls in a male dominated field, add on a very competitive colleague she can’t stand and some days are harder than others. Until she gets a text from an unknown number. She can’t help but feel some kind of connection with the person on the other side and they’ve somehow built a relationship. Long work days are not so bad anymore because she has her new “friend” exchange text messages with. When she finally got the courage to ask him to meet up, for her sister’s destination wedding, imagine her surprise when her nemesis Gabe shows up.
Now they have to figure out if what they’ve built through their text messages is real and can overcome their rivalry in real life.

I love the enemies to lovers trope so I enjoyed this book a lot. And I also enjoyed seeing Emmy and Gabe flirt, get to know each other and build a deep connection through their texts.

A fun workplace, enemies to lovers romcom with swoon and spice!

This is a PERFECT romance. For fans of the holy grail The Hating Game, this brings its own spin of work rivals accidentally mutually catfishing each other and then falling irl. omg they are so sweet. They both work in such an interesting industry, I liked how this author handled describing the FMC working in a male dominated field. It wasn't too depressing but also felt validating and realistic, the good and the bad. They are baseball statisticians and get so nerdy together but also in a romantic I love you for your brain way?? And then he agrees to be her date to her sister's destination wedding?! And there is only one bed?!?! I'm telling you, this book is perfect.

Thank you Avon for the eARC.
