Golda's Hutch
5/5 ✨
AGHHH Robert never, ever disappoints! EVER! This has to be my favorite novel of his so far.
These characters were absolutely incredible: Craig, the vegetarian & bunny lover; his wife, Shoshana, who is a BDSM/mistress connoisseur; Justine, the mortician (sound familiar? teehee) who is literally putting people back together again; Nigel, her husband, who causes quite the drama-rama at work; and SO MANY more! I could not put this down every time I picked it up. When I wasn't reading, I'd find myself thinking of these characters and what they were doing, how their story was going to proceed the next time I raced through the pages.
You can tell that this novel is supposed to be deeply psychological, revolving around the minds and motivations of the main characters within. The absolute genius mixture of story elements like BDSM, yoga and its practice, animals and what they mean to us, and working in the corporate world will come together and blow you away with the story that has been created.
I know I read a lot of spicy novels, but don't expect the normal for BDSM when reading this, and that's not a bad thing! Instead of the steamy or smutty scenes that may be involved when examining BDSM, instead we get to see the layers underneath that make a person tick in their own certain way. Craig's relationship with Shoshana and how it developed over the course of the novel was both beautiful and heartbreaking; Craig so wanted more, and Shoshana wasn't able to give it to him and understand why he needed what he needed anymore. The way that these relationships and the ins and outs are portrayed is real and raw and genuine; a breathtaking and refreshing look at BDSM and why those in the community feel safest there.
Although there is a TW for an animal dying (sweet little innocent Golda, you are missed)—Robert handled this so carefully and with so much love and respect, I didn't feel it necessary to not continue forward with the story. And that's also an important part—Golda's death is a part of the story, and it makes sense that it happens how it happens. It's not overly gruesome or anything like what you normally see within novels. I can't explain how thankful I am for that! You can tell that Robert has an affinity for animals and that he values them and what they bring with their love and personalities, which is why one is such an integral part of Golda's Hutch.
With this incredible cast of characters, you find yourself contemplating and comprehending that the "ordinary" people you interact with on a daily basis might not be leading such ordinary lives in the background. They may be doing things that you could never even imagine for them—and this is something that Robert depicts and builds a story around beautifully.
I cannot thank Robert enough for the advanced reader's copy of Golda's Hutch—it is a prized possession, and I think about this novel at least once a day since finishing it. If you want to start reading Robert's fantastic works, start here. You won't regret it!
