I am always on the lookout for new recipes, healthier ways to cook and eat and interesting ideas to make meals times enjoyable and tasty. This book gave me all of those things and I enjoyed reading the cookbook as well as trying some new recipes. The recipes are easy to follow, the pictures will make you hungry and the way the author makes you want to try these recipes is wonderful.
A great cookbook for adding more veg to your diet, a great book but not a diet so it isn't restrictive. A wonderful new cookbook to add to my collection. I'm off to try a few more recipes now!
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This will be my go to book when I am planning meals and when I run out of ideas. I found everything in this book exactly to my interests, tastes and needs.
The meal plan in the end was a nice touch. The ingredients in the recipes are wholesome. Those photos - amazing!
I am trying to make more veggie and vegan meals, so when I look for recipes in this area I am looking to make them as simple as possible and without loads of ingredients. Calum’s book does exactly that - he makes things accessible but also delicious. The tofu mango chutney burgers are one of my favourites from the book.
Proper Healthy by Calum Harris is a plant-based cookbook filled with simple, nourishing recipes designed to boost energy and support long-term health. The book focuses on easy-to-make meals using fresh, whole ingredients, making it ideal for busy people looking to eat healthier without complex prep. Perfect for anyone wanting to incorporate more plant-based meals into their diet without feeling restricted, the contents are divided into separate sections depending on what you're in the mood for—Brunch, Quick Eats, Proper Eats, Puds, Snacks, and Pick-Me-Ups.
The food photography is bright and beautiful, with a picture accompanying every recipe, so you know exactly what to expect for the final result. Each recipe is approachable and flexible, making it easy to substitute ingredients based on what's in season or what you have on hand. Whether you're after a quick snack, a comforting dinner, or a light, energizing breakfast, the book provides a range of options that are both satisfying and full of flavor.
One of the book's standout features is its balance—it's not about restrictive diets, but about eating in a way that makes you feel good, without missing out on flavor or enjoyment. Proper Healthy is a great resource for anyone looking to make plant-based meals an easy, everyday part of their routine!
Proper Healthy is a cookbook focusing on a healthy plant-based diet. This cookbook gave me one of my favorite features of a cookbook: a photo for almost every recipe. I like to know how things are supposed to look. Although I have no plans to go to a fully plant-based diet, this cookbook provides lots of varying recipes that could be incorporated into any diet. The recipes appeared to be simple enough for most to achieve.
Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group - White Lion and NetGalley for an eARC of this cookbook for an honest review.
Definitely need to buy this one. I have many vegan cook books and I follow many vegan accounts on Instagram. Calum Harris stands out by his healthy but really fun recipes that just don't taste all that healthy. And wonderful bonus: you can cook most of his dishes on a budget, no need to go to specialty stores and dinner's ready in half an hour.
To me that's the perfect combo. Affordable, quick, tasty, no fuss and healthy. What more can you ask for? This book is the perfect addition to the recipes he shares online so if you love those, get this book. You won't regret it.
A good variety of recipes. This book is filled with beautiful photographs and lots of useful hints and tips. Perfect for any plant based foodies
I personally don't have a plant based diet so when I make plant based meals I am looking to make them as simple as possible and without loads of ingredients. This book was super useful in that the recipes do not have a load of ingredients but still meet the criteria of being protein filled and healthy.
Calum Harris made the book digestible ;) by intersecting his own humour and personality into the blurbs of his recipes. This improved the general reading experience, especially if you are like me and enjoy to read cookery books in one go.
I enjoyed the breakdown of nutritional benefits, actually explaining why each recipe is 'healthy'. I am a big fan of nutrition so the q and a between Harris and a registered nutritionist enhanced the book for me.
I would recommend
I'll admit that I didn't have high expectations when I picked this book up off of Netgalley. The cover doesn't look like much and I had never heard of the author. I ended up quite surprised by how many recipes that I ended up bookmarking.
The interior photography is well done. The book is bright and cheerful. The writing is a bit affected and overly fake friendly for my taste in some of the recipes. Just tell me how to make the recipe. We don't have to be pretend best friends while we do it.
But the recipes are actually quite good. There are a few tips here that I hadn't thought of before.
On the tempeh taco bowl with chipotle crema for example, I hadn't thought of making a crema with silken tofu before instead of a yogurt or nondairy sour cream. I would be more likely to make sauces this way. It is simple and obvious once you think of it but I hadn't.
I think I will be making several of the tofu dishes that he has in this book has toppings for salads or bowls that I make. He makes good flavor combinations. His recipes aren't complicated and even if you aren't interested in making the entire dish there are nuggets that you can take away from each one.
Very great cookbook well explained, and great alternatives for vegan diet.
Lots of amazing recipes to pimped up your week.
Such a fun and cool plant-based cookbook! Incredibly informative and full of easy to follow recipes. Callum's personality really shines through in this book. The imagery is incredible and I love food photography so that's say a lot. I look forward to making a bunch of these recipes and look forward to seeing more by Callum.
Thank you NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion and Carnival for giving me an ARC of this amazing cookbook!
Great cookbook! Love the look of these recipes, planning on trying some out soon, and look forward to more from Calum Harris!
This book is great for all vegie lovers (and not only). As someone who is trying to loose some weight and eat helthier I found very interesting and good looking recepies. You learn about nutrition in each meal, and some cooking tips as well. Will try some meals for sure.
I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great cookbook. It's filled with interesting recipes and the pictures are wonderful!
At first glance I thought award winning DJ Calvin Harris was diversifying into the world of nutrition! However on closer inspection I can see that it is in fact Calum Harris, a self-confessed home cook who found traction via social media, who is the mastermind/chef behind ‘Proper Healthy’.
This cookery book is described as being ‘80 plant based recipes with a boost’. The presentation/graphics in this book are appealing and eye-catching, while the food pictures undoubtedly had me drooling!
The contents are divided up into brunch, quick eats, proper eats, puds, snacks and pick me ups. Usefully a meal planner is also featured towards the end. All recipes feature a calorie count and breakdown of macronutrients. A lot of the recipes feature common and easily obtainable ingredients, although there were a few (such as vegan kimchi) that were new to me.
This book has a trendy vibe - it conjures up images of 20 somethings cooking up a weekend brunch or dinner party.
Recipe names were quirky ‘Date me pancakes’ sound fun (and surely belongs on an episode of TV dating show of yesteryear ‘dinner date’!)
All in all I would recommend this joyful and colourful book for adventurous vegan foodies - If you have ever wanted to know how to whip butter beans this is the book for you!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
Proper Healthy makes plant-based eating simple, delicious, and healthy. Calum Harris teams up with a dietician to create recipes that boost energy, gut health, protein, or calorie control—all while being easy to make and packed with flavor.
From comforting dishes like Gnocchi Shepherd’s Pie to creative desserts like Raspberry Miso Blondies, there’s something for everyone. Each recipe includes tips to meet your health goals, making it easy to customize meals.
Perfect for beginners or experienced plant-based eaters, this cookbook is a great resource for anyone who wants to eat well without sacrificing taste or spending hours in the kitchen.
This is the plant based cookbook I've been looking for. Every recipe is healthy yet appetising, and well set out/easy to follow. I would definitely recommend this and have started following Calum on social media for even more
This cookbook scratched an itch in my brain and was so satisfying to read! From the beginning, I loved the tone so much, it was humorous and so achingly genuine that I immediately felt like Harris cared about putting the best most yummy vegan food in front of us. He debunks the 'healthy' label so effortlessly and this felt like a true passion project for him, It was undeniably refreshing to read a cookbook packed with so much humour as I usually find the wording on cookbooks can be quite formal and serious.
There was an abundance of practical advice for implementing a healthy lifestyle and some tips were even given by external experts which made this cookbook feel so fully rounded. I loved how informal, fun and chatty even the recipes were - it definitely helped chip away at some of the stigma and intimidation that I experience not only around cooking but around vegan cooking especially.
A nice touch was the incorporation of fermented foods and the emphasis on fibre in the diet which was lovely. The only critique I have is that the recipes are heavily reliant on tofu and tempeh as staples, so it would have been nice to incorporate some soy free options/suggestions. However, there was still a wonderful variety of dishes that covered all bases if anything I wish each section had more recipes!) The meal planner at the end was a nice touch and proof of how important making healthy eating a lifestyle is for this book.
Nice book. Would make a great gift. I’m sure I’ll try out a few of the recipes. Beautiful photos of the recipes too.
I have been following Calum for a while on social media as he always gives me some good inspiration on what to cook! I would recommend this book for sure, it's full of easy and tasty-looking recipes you can whip up in little time perfect for someone with a busy schedule or someone who is kinda just starting out to cook honestly, that still wants to make an effort to eat healthy and delicious meals!
