I love Lisa Jewel as an author, but this one was a miss for me. I would not recommend this book unless you’re very into super heroes. The writing even felt a bit choppy and cheesy at times with the characters repeating things twice, settings jumping around, and some corny dialogue.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

It's definitely not your typical Lisa Jewell but I can appreciate her doing something like this! I'm not a huge Marvel fan, Im a Lisa Jewell fan so I was excited to get this from Netgalley because I was real curious how it would play out. For the most part I enjoyed it! I wanted to keep reading and at times I felt the need to hurry and read to see what was happening and other times I just felt like I was reading because I wanted to be done with it already. Overall it was a decent story but it felt disjointed at times and sometimes I was just annoyed like can we get the reveal out already?? I very much believe that you sometimes have to be in a right mindset for books and maybe I was just too distracted by other things to overly enjoy this one. It definitely has the Lisa Jewell feel but very much different than her others. Still a fan and will always read her work!

Okay I’m not going to lie- I did not finish this one. As a huge Lisa Jewell fan, I am underwhelmed with what sounded like an entertaining concept for a book. A superhero crime private investigator? I was so on board! However I just was not feeling this, and ultimately put it down. I’m sure there is an audience for it, I am just not it!

I love Jessica Jones and I love Lisa Jewell. But together? I was disappointed. I really wanted to love this book and I might’ve had a better experience if I wasn’t already familiar with Jessica Jones.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones is a closed, angry, brooding alcoholic. Lisa Jewell’s interpretation of her character was too soft. The book ends with Jessica Jones going to therapy. Really!? That would never happen.

Also, I was disappointed that Luke Cage was not described as African-American. This is an important detail. In fact, Luke Cage was the first Marvel character to be African-American.

For people that are not familiar with Jessica Jones and the Marvel universe I could imagine that this book would be very confusing to them. Her superpowers were not adequately described or explained.

The magical plot was not clearly explained and I finished the book thinking, how did that even happen? It didn’t make sense, like, at all.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

4/5⭐️ this was giving me black mirror vibes and I honestly loved every second. I was really confused for like the first 100 pages but then I started piecing everything together. I had no clue where Lisa Jewell was going with this one in the beginning but I’m so happy I stuck it out. I didn’t really know much about Marvel going into this story, but I feel like I didn’t really need to. The pacing was perfect, kept my interest the entire time. A great read.

I was more than excited to get picked to read a new Marvel Crime novel featuring the famous Jessica Jones! and now I have to keep the secrets about Jessica in me until the world finds out what is happening with Jessica.

The book starts with your typical Jessica, she sleeps late, wakes up groggy and hung over, has no food in her place and is not quite remembering what she got into the night before. When a woman shows up begging Jessica to help her find out what is going on with her twin teenage children. Jessica mildly decides to take a look into this case, when strange thing after next leads her to realize something very wrong is happening to these teenagers, something grim and dark. An in true Jessica Jones fashion she jumps headfirst into this case, trying to solve crimes, and fighting the urges she feels to use her special powers.

Without fail Jessica does everything she can to save everyone involved, like a true superhero. While also dealing with her own personal life and trying to make sense of her own future.

This book was a fun read, it was a little choppy going between the different characters but overall, a good book and will definitely be enjoyed by Marvel Fans.

TOOO GOOD !! Lisa Jewell does it again and again over and over. I just love her writing so much I was hooked from the start. Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc, can’t wait to get my hands on a copy when it’s released.

huge fan of Marvel and Jessica Jones, I was beyond excited when I heard about Breaking the Dark, and it absolutely exceeded my expectations! Lisa Jewell masterfully blends crime, mystery, and supernatural elements, creating a gripping detective story with a dark and thrilling atmosphere.

Jessica Jones, with her signature wit and toughness, is thrown into a fascinating case involving twins, social media influence, and eerie themes of immortality. The setting shifts between New York and a small village in the UK, making for an intriguing cultural contrast that added depth to the story. And the cameos? Seeing Luke Cage and Danny Rand pop up was such a fun surprise!

The writing is sharp, the pacing is perfect, and the creepy, suspenseful elements kept me hooked from start to finish. You don’t have to be a Marvel fan to love this book, but if you are, it’s even better. This is hands down one of my favorite reads of the year, and I already can’t wait for the next book in the series! Highly recommend to anyone who loves Marvel, mysteries, and a bit of magic.

Thank you NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue for this ARC in exchange for my review.

This was my least favorite Lisa Jewell book to date. I love most of her writings and I knew going into this it would be different since it’s Jessica Jones. There was a good creepy aspect to it that Lisa does very well, however for me, this just was not what I was looking for from her writing. Still one of my favorite authors, but I’ll stick to her thrillers from now on.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw this book, but I saw Lisa Jewell’s name and had to read it! It was a fun read that was a bit different than her typical books, but it was a nice change of pace!

Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell is a total page-turner. It’s got suspense, twists, and some seriously well-done characters that keep you hooked. This was the first of two Jessica Jones Marvel books. I have to admit, I have never read or watched anything in the Marvel Universe so it was a bit confusing to start. I feel like Marvel fans will dive right in and be hooked to the characters.
The story had a clever plot, with a superhero twist that is totally original. If you're into mystery thrillers with a lot of depth, this one's definitely worth picking up!

This was my first time reading Lisa Jewell, and as a big Marvel fan, I was curious how she'd handle Jessica Jones. I’m happy to say it did not disappoint! Jewell nailed Jessica’s gritty, no-nonsense vibe, and the story felt like it fit perfectly into her world. The book is packed with twists and turns that kept me guessing the whole way through. Whether you're into Marvel or just love a good mystery, this one's a solid read.

I have read all of Lisa Jewell's novels and I watched the Jessica Jones series on TV so I thought this book would be a slam dunk winner for me. But if I weren't a fan of both Lisa Jewell and Jessica Jones, I doubt I would have been able to finish this book because the pacing was just too slow. It was really a slog to read it. The plot was fine, the characters were fine, but everything felt like it was moving in slow motion and I just couldn't get into it. Malcolm was the only one that really peaked my interest and made reading this book fun. That said, I would be willing to try the second installment in the series ... maybe it was just this particular book that didn't speak to me.

4 stars

This surprised me! I tried to go into it with an open mind since I’m not a marvel girly and it paid off! Some classic Lisa Jewell twists and turns and a cool but also creepy storyline.

Like many reviewers, I was drawn to this book because of the author. I'm a fan of Lisa Jewell's work, and I think she did a great job with this book as well. I am not a Marvel fan, and I really have no prior knowledge of Jessica Jones other than knowing there was a Netflix show a while ago featuring the character. That being said, I thought this novel was enjoyable. There were twists and turns as well as some unexpected (for me) otherworldly aspects. I am not a fan of vampire books, but I did still find this interesting. I don't know that I'd read another installment because I'm just not a superhero person, but I'm glad I read this one.
Thanks to Net Galley for the book to review

I am not a hardcore Marvel person by any means but I still find the whole world of superhero’s intriguing. I actually had to reach out and phone a friend, who is immersed in the Marvel world. Having that background information helped me understand things a ton. The story itself was very interesting, and it kept my attention.

In the long run, this story wasn’t for me. I was hoping for this novel to still have those Lisa Jewell touches, but I just didn’t feel the connection. I didn’t really care for the FMC in this storyline either. All in all, if you love thrillers and Marvel, this series is definitely something you should check out.

Thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

It was fun to read a book about a female superhero and this definitely had an intriguing plot. Not the typical type of book that I would read but I was glad I branched out

I would like to preface this with I am not a Marvel girl; so that part was hard for me to relate with. I had really high hopes for it because it is Lisa Jewell but I think this one just wasn’t meant for me. Overall it’s a good book but not my favorite. I would recommend it to my marvel loving friends though!

Thank you @netgalley for gifting me this arc of Breaking the Dawn.

I love Lisa Jewell. I have liked everything i have read by her and seeing her name on a book is an immediate add to my tbr. I was very intrigued by this Marvel crime thriller. I do love a good superhero story, although I am not super familiar with Jessica Jones.
The story started off strong and hooked me right away. The plot line was very unique, but I felt like there was something missing and branches to the story that didn't quite fit. The characters were very surface level and fell flat and the story was carried through the dialogue. There was a lot of telling instead of showing.

The idea of people wanting to achieve perfection is very accurate and rampant in today's society. People today can relate to the desire to appear perfect, either themselves or someone they know. Using technology and science to create the perfect image on the outside was interesting to me.

The threads that pulled everything together didn't seem to be very strong, left me asking "why?" and feeling underwhelmed. However, the book did keep my attention, the story was easy to follow and I did find myself wanting to know what would happen next.

Jessica is a private investigator who was once a superhero. A wealthy mother has sought her out to investigate her twins who came back from a summer in the UK with their dad looking perfect and acting very differently.
Jessica accepts the job and it becomes more apparent that she is struggling with an existential crisis. She is stuck between the past, the present and loss of self esteem due to past actions she was literally forced to take. She also now has a new personal challenge that she has to face. As she investigates the twins it gets stranger and stranger. Leading her to the UK and into harms way. Jessica soon uncovers a crime being committed real time. This is all a bit more than she bargained for and bringing up her past trauma. There is also a deeper and creepier history attached to this weird mystery. One that leads to the crazy schemes of a distorted beauty influencer who will stop at nothing to be famous and change the world with illusions and magic. She has no problem sacrificing anyone or anything to release her product which she thinks will better the world. The problem is she hasn’t completely thought it through nor is she conscious enough to understand that children may want things that aren’t the best for them. This becomes even bigger than the twins when Jessica finds out that powerful magic is about to be unleashed on a major city. Will Jessica be able to piece it all together and stop the plan set in motion after years of work? Will she crash out or start a new chapter in life?
I really liked this book alot. I loved the empowerment and magic aspects. Thank you for allowing me to read it early.
