⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Decent but Not Her Best
I usually love Lisa Jewell’s books, but Breaking the Dark didn’t quite hook me the same way. The premise was intriguing, and there were some good twists, but the pacing felt off—some parts dragged while others felt rushed. The characters were interesting but not as deep as I’d hoped. It’s still a decent read with solid writing, just not as gripping as her best work. Worth checking out if you’re a fan, but I wouldn’t call it a must-read.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book but I knew I was a huge fan of Lisa Jewell so it would have to be good; I as not wrong! This was an interesting book featuring Jessica Jones and how she was struggling with her life after a terrible incident that happened to her and ruined her relationship with the other marvels. Jessica is hired to investigate a set of twins that seems to be acting very strange upon their return from the UK. This leads her to travel to the UK to find out what happened and finds herself wrapped up in the evil that lies there. This book mixes the prefect balance of Marvel, thriller, suspense and sci-fi. You will get immersed into the book at the first page and read straight through to the end.
Thank you NetGalley and Hyperion for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Love all Lisa jewell 📚. I absolutely loved this more as well. Can't wait for the second one to be released. I highly recommend this book to any mystery/thriller reader.

As soon as I heard about this series/book, I knew I needed to pick it up. I watched Jessica Jones back when it was on Netflix so it was awesome to see the character again (she's my favorite of the Defenders). This was also my first time reading Lisa Jewell.
I found this to be an intriguing detective story. The mystery kept me guessing and was full of surprises. I was definitely glued to my kindle during the high suspense parts! We get great characters and even special appearances but other Defenders which was cool.
Would recommend if you like Marvel/Jessica Jones or just a good detective story.

This book was definitely not what I expected from Lisa Jewell. The Marvel element was different than the other books I have read by her, which I knew by the description going into reading it. I do love Marvel movies, so I was very excited to read this book and it did not disappoint! As soon as I thought I knew what was happening, I realized that I, in fact, did NOT know what was happening at all! This book was thrilling, engaging, a bit creepy at times, and the main character was just enough of a "hot mess" to love and root for.

As a huge fan of Lisa Jewell’s books, I was eager to read Breaking the Dark, even though I’m not particularly into superheroes. While the story has enough of a mystery element to appeal to thriller lovers, I still found it difficult to fully engage with. The Marvel themes, though well-executed, didn’t capture my interest in the same way Lisa Jewell’s usual psychological thrillers do. That said, if you’re a Marvel fan, you’ll likely love this—but for me, it just didn’t hit the mark.

I am not a Marvel fan, whatsoever.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book and read something I wouldn't have pick from a shelf.
Jessica Jones is a superhero going through a rough patch and picks up a job to help get her out of a slump she's in.
The plot is a slow burn for the first 80% of the book. There's a lot of moving pieces and background during the first 80% of the book.
After this, it does pick up and get fast paced.

Breaking The Dark is about a woman, Jessica who is hired to figure out what is going on with the lady’s twins when they return from summer vacation with their dad overseas. They are suddenly superior in looks and schoolwork and keep saying everything is perfect. Jessica goes undercover to see what she can find overseas but she has to be careful as she suspects she is pregnant.
This book is not usually something I would read but since it was Lisa Jewell I figured I’d give it a try. Overall it was good , it was just slow in some parts.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a copy for my opinion.

I couldn’t put this book down!! The characters were well developed and I found myself staying up way past my bedtime to finish it. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this incredible book! I will definitely be sharing it with all of my fellow book lovers!

Lisa Jewell never disappoints! As usual Breaking The Dark was a page turner. The Marvel aspect had me skeptical but I truly enjoy the compelling story.

Different than you would expect from Lisa Jewell but I enjoyed it tremendously! Creepy, Bizarre, Thrilling…It was
Perfectly perfect!
Loved the plot & connected to Jessica Jones a lot!

This story follows Jessica Jones investigating the behavior of a wealthy woman's twins. Their mother notices that they are acting strange upon returning from a summer holiday in England with their father. Jessica jumps in, enlists the help of an assistant, and jets across the pond. This story is inventive in its plotting and premise (it oscillates between the present day story and backstories of the supporting characters), but falls flat in its length. The story could have been 100 pages shorter. I had to know what happened in the end, I was rapidly page-turning until about 90% through.
There is a great side plot to this story that I enjoyed following - will not give too much away!

A lot of timelines and jumping around to keep straight, as well as characters whose names change between those different timelines can make it a struggle to read this as an escape or for fun, and that’s why it’s 4 and not 5 stars for me. Otherwise this was a very interesting concept for a story and had a well developed ARC. I liked Jessica as a character in a Lisa Jewell story as I am a huge Marvel fan. Lots of twists and turns and some crazy moments, I’d definitely recommend this one to fans of a good thriller..

Can't believe I'm saying I didn't enjoy a Lisa Jewell book. I just felt like the Marvel aspect of it put her in a box and she would've made it a much more thrilling story on her own. I really liked how the premise sounded, but unfortunately it just did not live up to my expectations.

I’m normally a big Lisa Jewell fan and I’m into Marvel, but I struggled getting through this one. I do think if you’re more into Marvel and follow the movies in order then this would be the book for you. It just didn’t quite hit for me like I wanted.

oh boy. i was so excited for this - turns out, in my opinion, marvel and lisa jewell shouldn’t mix. i don’t know anything about marvel, so it wasn’t for me. still love you, lisa!

Thank you Net Galley for the ARC!
Jessica and Malcom (aka Sly), were very likable characters. I enjoyed reading this, but at times was confused by the flashbacks. About halfway through the book, I was able to piece a lot together. All together, an enjoyable read, just not really for me.

Jessica Jones, a retired superhero takes on an unusual case about twin sixteen year olds lark and fox who have acted different after returning from a stay with their father in the UK. Their mother tells Jessica about how their skin is unnaturally perfect and how all their quirks and habits have suddenly disappeared. Jessica travels to London to find out more and discovers a greater evil at play.
I’d recommend this if you love/know a lot about marvel and enjoy lisa jewell's writing style!

I normally love Lisa Jewell books, but this one didn't do it for me. It seemed like a weird branch off book and ended up being a DNF, unfortunately.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue in exchange for an honest review. This Jessica Jones novel sees the retired superhero turned private investigator tackling a sensitive case. A mother's concern over her twin children's changed behavior after a summer visit with their father in England sends Jessica on a quest for answers. The investigation takes her to England, where she delves into the children's activities and the people they encountered. I appreciated the compelling plot and the exploration of Jessica's character. However, while the mystery was engaging, I felt the pacing was more deliberate than I anticipated for a Marvel title. I missed the explosive action sequences that are a hallmark of the Marvel universe.
