A gripping story from the start. Much different than the usual Lisa Jewell books in the best way. The story follows Jessica Jones after she has left the Avengers and is now a private investigator hired by a rich mother of twins who have been acting strangley since their return to NY from their summer with their gather in London. The story keeps getting weirder and weirder as the secrets and twists unfold. Kinda dark, kinda twisty. Couldn't put it down.

I adore Lisa Jewell's stories, so I'm willing to follow her wherever her creativity takes her. This was definitely a departure from her norm, as we're delving into Marvel territory. I am not a huge Marvel fan, but my love of Jewell made me want to read this book. I do wish I knew more about Jessica Jones going into this one, but that was my fault, as I imagine most people who pick up this book will have a better handle on her character. I enjoyed this story overall, but struggled with the first half of the book, as it was a little slow and confusing for me. Once I began to untangle the story, I was much more invested and needed to see it to completion. I think a Marvel fan could really enjoy this story.

I’m a huge fan of Lisa Jewell, so when I saw her new book, I knew it was a must read. I did not realize it was a Marvel story. I didn’t know how I’d feel about it, but I ended up really enjoying it. It’s a little different from Jewell’s typical books, but it was well done and I enjoyed it. Jessica Jones isn’t the stereotypical superhero. She is dealing with possible alcoholism and also emotional trauma, but she’s a good person that wants to do the right thing. Her case is interesting and the mom that hired her to investigate her twins was very likable. The “case” feels like it has the workings of a Marvel movie, but it was definitely suited for a novel. All in all, solid read. I enjoyed it.

Thank you NetGalley for the arc.
When I saw Marvel & Lisa Jewel I knew I wanted to read this. I will tell you that the first 25-30% of this book was pretty slow. Even as a Marvel fan. I had just started to wonder if I would finish it, then that 30% hit and it took off for me. I wanted to know what was going on and was connected to characters.
I enjoyed how this book takes you through moments in the past that connect to what is happening now. Allowing the reader to sort of piece it together with Jessica.
The writing was good. The story good, not mind blowing but good. The first 30% slow. Overall a solid light and entertaining read.

I chose this book based on the author, as I am a fan of Lisa Jewell's thrillers. As someone not too familiar with Marvel or Jessica Jones' character, I wasn't sure what to expect. The storyline felt original, and I appreciated the twists throughout the book. I just had a difficult time connecting with the superhero references, so it was not a page-turner for me, but may be for Marvel fans or a YA audience.
I received this as a free ARC on NetGalley from the publisher.

Lisa Jewel writing a Marvel book? I’m here for it! This was definitely different from her normal writing style and wasn’t my favorite book of hers but overall I did have a good time. I loved the supernatural aspect this book brought, it also had a dark premise that gave it a darker vibe. Overall I liked it but didn’t love it.

I felt this was a big mess and found the plot absurd. Now I am a bit of a Marvel fan, but I've never followed Jessica Jones, so I was curious about this one. But the storyline in this was so convuluted that I could figure out what was happening until I was almost half way through. And I did almost DNF it, but it did get more interesting by the midway point, so I marched on.
The main character, Jessica Jones, is a mess. She drinks too much, is depressed and how the hell anyone hired her to figure out what happened to their teenagers is beyond me.
She does end up going down a rabbit hole with her investigation and eventually ends up figuring it out, but everything in between is something that was supposed to be a story ... I think. I was so confused. And the secondary storyline with Polly? Like what the hell was that. It was so poorly added that it took me to almost the end when I realized it was the "evil" side of the story. Then add a bit of social commentary on social influencers and it lost me.
Maybe I would feel different if I read the final version, but I have no inclination to do so ... and I have another book on my shelf that she's written and I'm not sure I want to read it now. This has put me off her completely.
I definitely need to take a step back and give her another try, because this not being the final version could have been a huge part of why I found this confusing.

I had no idea what to expect reading this, knowing nothing about the Marvel universe. I was pleasantly surprised that that did not detract from the story in any way. There was A Lot going on in this book but I flew through the last 30% as everything tied together. That was original and kept me guessing!

I usually love Lisa Jewell books, and as someone who has ready many Marvel comics, I was sad to not connect with this book.
I wanted it to be a gripping thriller that kept me turning pages, but it fell a bit flat for me. I didn’t feel like I connected with Jessica, and I wanted to care about the twins but I just couldn’t get into the story the way I would have liked. She was able to stay true to Marvel’s depiction of Jessica Jones, which I appreciated.
I look forward to more books by Lisa, she’s a fantastic author. I appreciate the advance copy from NetGalley and the ability to give an honest review.

I'll read just about anything Lisa Jewell writes, but I probably wouldn’t have picked up Breaking the Dark on my own since it’s part of a new Marvel Comics series—a world I’m neither familiar with nor particularly interested in exploring. However, I received an ARC through NetGalley and decided to give it a shot. While it’s quite different from her recent thrillers and mysteries, the writing is just as strong. I’m still unsure if the superhero themes are really my thing, but I really appreciated the underlying message of the book and found it just as easy to read as all of her others.

Not the typical Lisa Jewell book that I enjoyed to read. I struggled to connect with the book, the supernatural elements are not what I typically enjoy to read. I had no idea as to its connection to Marvel comics which I just don’t have any interest in. While not my cup of tea, I’m definitely excited about her future books. Thank you to the author, the publisher, and net Galley for this opportunity.

4⭐️ A New Marvel Jessica Jones story by Lisa Jewell, and it does not disappoint!
Great characters, intense storyline had me not wanting to put it down! Jessica is lying low in her N.Y. apartment when a client hires her to investigate her teenage twins odd behavior. The twins Lark and Fox just aren’t right since returning from summer at their Dad’s estate in England.
Jessica travels across the pond to discover a plot so deep it takes everything she has to stop it! Immortals, kidnappings, anti aging blood serum, secret basement chambers and social media addicts!
Oh and to top it off Jessica is pregnant with Luke Cage’s baby!!!
Thanks NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue Publishers for the eARC in exchange for my honest review

Everything by Lisa is amazing!!! She is one of my favorite writers and I’ve never seen the show or read Marvel comics so it was a fun read!

As a long time fan of the Marvel Universe, I was very excited to hear about the new books slated to be released. In true Lisa Jewell fashion, she didn't disappoint. She did a good job of staying true to the original Jessica Jones character while still showing her growth throughout the book. The plot itself was interesting and twisty with a true Marvel ending!

In Breaking the Dark, Lisa Jewell takes us back to the Marvel world of Jessica Jones, a slightly rumpled, semi retired superhero.
Now working as a private investigator, Jessica is hired to investigate a set of twins who came back from vacation abroad looking and acting like different people, once average kids, now with "perfect" skin, grades, and skills, while simultaneously struggling with her own mental health and worth. The nostalgia of the Marvel universe combined with the signature Lisa Jewell mystery is a crossover I never knew I needed, full of twists and turns, you will never guess what's coming next.

A thrilling book that keeps you turning the pages until the shocking ending. Full of twists and turns and shocks. Brilliant! I highly recommend reading this book! 📖

My first mistake was not realizing that this book was a marvel superhero book. I picked this book based on the author and the author alone. However, a few chapters in I went back and read the blurb about the book, and some pieces came together. However, this book was a miss for me. I didn't find it as much of a thriller or a mystery as I anticipated from Lisa Jewell. I didn't feel connected to the main character Jessica or really any of the characters. The villains and their story was so out there that I couldn't get into it. The dad being so dumb things were happening right under his nose was also really hard to buy into. It felt all around lackluster.
I enjoyed the ending when one of the characters who was saved was talking about perfectionism and what that means with social media.
If you're a super hero fan, you might enjoy this book more than I did. There wasn't a lot of use of powers in the book like I expected there to be either though.
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinion! Although this was a miss for me, I look forward to reading more of Lisa Jewell's books in the future!

Yeah, it's definitely giving Marvel vibes and lemme tell you something I DO NOT LIKE SUPERHEROES. I didn't even figure out what was happening until 60% of the way

Let’s do a cleanse with this book provided by NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue.

Breaking the Dark had potential with its intriguing premise, but the execution fell flat for me. From the beginning, the writing felt choppy and unpolished, making it hard to get into the flow of the story. Some of the language choices were downright juvenile—“making sex noises,” for example—and it undercut any attempt at building a serious or engaging narrative.
I wasn’t familiar with Jessica Jones as a superhero before picking this up, so I didn’t have any expectations. After my partner described her as a “messy drunk PI,” I’d say that matches how she’s portrayed here. While her rough-around-the-edges personality might appeal to fans, the dialogue was repetitive and lacked depth. Her constant refrain of “tell me in the simplest way you can” was frustrating, especially when she later claimed she herself was articulate—it felt contradictory and unnecessary.
The heavy focus on the possibility of a baby dominated the plot in a way that I found overbearing. By the time the central “issue” of the story finally surfaced, it was a cool concept, but it came so late in the game that it felt like too little, too late. Unfortunately, I was already checked out by then. And the ending? It was drawn out and bordered on cheesy, which didn’t help.
While the premise had promise, the writing style and pacing didn’t do it justice. Fans of Jessica Jones might still enjoy seeing her in this context, but for me, it missed the mark.
