Accession kicks off Terah Edun’s series with a blend of urban fantasy intrigue and magical politics that’s easy to get swept into. Edun writes with sharp, clear prose that makes for a fast read, and I appreciated how she drops us right into a world brimming with secrets, magic, and power plays.

The heroine, Katherine, is compelling—a young woman suddenly thrust into a dangerous supernatural legacy she barely understands. I liked her determination and relatable vulnerability as she grapples with powers and factions that all want a piece of her. The magical system feels fresh, particularly the concept of weaving webs of magic and influence.

That said, the pacing sometimes feels uneven. The book hits the ground running, which is exciting, but it also leaves some world-building and character relationships feeling a bit thin. Certain plot twists come so quickly that they’d have packed more punch with a bit more buildup. I also wished for a stronger emotional connection between Katherine and the supporting cast, since the stakes hinge heavily on whom she can trust.

Overall, Accession is a promising start for readers who love urban fantasy with a political edge and a heroine discovering her own power. It’s a quick, engaging read that hints at bigger things to come in the series. I’ll definitely be curious to see how Katherine’s story unfolds next.

I feel like this was supposed to give me Vampire Diaries, but with witches vibes and it didn't work. It was soapy in a bad way and the writing wasn't particularly engaging. I wanted to like it because it seemed fun, but it missed the mark for me.
