It was an okay read. It was an interesting concept but I unfortunately didn't really connect with the characters. The writing was good and I liked the technological part of the story. I think I will continue with the series since I really liked the concept.

(I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.)

Since her mother vanished nine years ago, Anamae and her father have shared a quiet life. But when Anamae discovers a brooch identical to her mother's favorite pendant, she unknowingly invites a slew of trouble into their world. They're not just jewellery, they're part of a highly developed technology capable of cloaking the human form. Triggering the jewellery's power attracts the attention of a secret society determined to confiscate the device -- and silence everyone who is aware of its existence. Anamae knows too much, and now she's Enemy Number One. She's forced to leave her father behind when she's taken in by a group determined to keep her safe. Here Anamae searches for answers about this hidden world. With her father kidnapped and her own life on the line, Anamae must decide if saving her dad is worth risking her new friends' lives. No matter what she does, somebody is going to get hurt.

You know what I really hate? Greatly conceived stories that are absolutely let down with bad characters.

Secret societies, cutting-edge technology, kidnapping, danger...all the cool stuff, all here together and, for the first 50 pages or so, quite captivating...sure, Anamae was a bit whiny and self-absorbed - I have come to expect that from a lot of YA novels now. For some reason that is considered cool...She also has a friendship with Will - and I was interested to see where that would lead...

And then, the downhill slide begins with the introduction of Jax. It seemed like all the cool stuff that was introduced at the start was put on the backburner so we could tell some uninteresting, insipid, unoriginal YA three-way-romance story. Jax was just bland - not sure why Anamae was interested, but then again, she probably deserved what she got after treating Will so poorly.

And I really lost interest. I had been hooked by the technology and secretive societies...and got left behind in a YA romance novel. Very disappointed.
