I loved When Javi Dumped Mari even though I found parts of it slow and would've loved them to get together much earlier. It was still such an enjoyable and awesome read filled with lots of tension, longing, pining, fun, flirty and sexy moments. I loved that there was a strong sense of community in it and that it spotlighted Latino characters and their culture. Javi and Mari's journey wasn't easy it was messy and there were many ups and downs but it was also sweet and beautiful. I definitely recommend this book.

An easy breezy romcom in the vein of When Harry Met Sally...except this time our Sally (Mari) is getting married and its not to Harry (Javi)...and its all on him to make sure he finally gets his girl!
This was a perfect brain-off romcom with vey lovely characters. The one piece I couldn't get behind was anything about Mari's relationship with her fiance Alex. They had 0 chemistry and I couldn't get behind her willingness to marry this man she clearly didn't love!! I did have fun, though, with Javi's antics to try and get the wedding canceled!
Thanks so much to Mia Sosa and NetGalley for a chance to read this in exchange for an honest review.

*2.5
This was just not good, I don't even think they should of ended up together. The story was told in a dual timeline but really it was mainly in the past which wasn't necessary. I don't feel like I really believed in their friendship that much let alone think that they are in love. They both needed to take time for themselves. Also they were only "together" for one chapter at the end. I love a slowburn but I need to see them together for at least a little bit.
I received an arc through netgalley.

I was beyond excited to receive an ARC of this book—especially knowing I’ll be seeing Mia Sosa in person on the 25th to hear her speak about this story! Let me just say: getting to read it beforehand made the experience even more special.
This book was EVERYTHING. From the college flashbacks to present-day reconnections, Mia Sosa captures the evolution of Javi and Mari’s relationship in a way that’s tender, emotional, and incredibly real. The dual timeline felt like flipping through a memory scrapbook—and I was hooked from start to finish.
Javi? He’s the ultimate book boyfriend and best friend. The kind of guy who prioritizes Mari’s happiness—even when it means putting his own feelings on hold. His loyalty, his kindness, his love? It had me melting.
And Mari? She’s a powerhouse—fierce, confident, and the kind of woman who uplifts everyone around her. Watching their friendship blossom into something deeper, all while navigating the what-ifs and should-we-cross-this-line moments, was so relatable and heart-tugging.
The representation was chef’s kiss, and the emotional depth made me laugh, tear up, and fall in love with their story. If you’re a fan of friends-to-lovers with rich cultural layers and heartfelt moments, When Javi Dumped Mari is your next must-read.
I’m so grateful to have read this early—and I can’t wait to hear Mia Sosa talk about it in person! 💖

Thank you Putnam and PRH Audio for my gifted copies. All opinions are my own.
Mia Sosa’s The Worst Best Man is an all time favorite so I was very excited for When Javi Dumped Mari. I was a little nervous since Mari was engaged for most of the story, but I liked how it wrapped up.
I really enjoyed the flashbacks to Javi and Mari’s friendship all the way back to college. Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and books like this are why.
It seemed obvious to everyone other than Mari that she and Javi were in love with each other. I loved Mari’s group of bridesmaids/man of honor and how they supported her. This story dealt with knowing your worth and going after what you want in life. I loved how Mari grew up to be such a strong business woman and also seeing her stand up for herself at the end.

Mia Sosa's book was delightful. You can see how Mari sees Javi as dumping her and you can also see his reasons for "dumping" her (Mari's words, not his). Loved the quick dialogue and the animated conversation between the main characters and their friends.

Ugh sorry, I’m going to be a hater. I was so excited to receive an advanced copy of this, but unfortunately, I found the story dull, and reading it became a chore. The characters never truly felt like true “best friends” to me. There was a lack of emotional chemistry that made it hard to buy into their connection beyond physical attraction. The dual timeline structure also felt SO excessive. While a few chapters set in the past helped explain certain present-day moments, most didn’t add meaningful depth and ultimately disrupted the pacing for me. So sad this didn’t work out for me, but thank you to G.P. Putnam’s Sons and NetGalley for the eARC!

Hilarious and swoony, Mia never fails to bring everything to the table with her romcoms, and When Javi Dumped Mari is no exception. It is THE summer read of 2025! Mari and Javi are the definition of yearning, and it's delicious.

A friends-to-lovers romance that's been in the works for over a decade— When Javi Dumped Mari has true romcom sensibilities in that there's plenty of shenanigans and neither Javi nor Mari restrain themselves from doing some pretty wacky stuff throughout the book.
But the craziest thing is probably the fact that Mari is getting married in six weeks... and Javi is out to stop it with HER FRIENDS' SUPPORT. It feels like Mia Sosa is playing a game of chicken with you as you get closer and closer to the wedding and Mari is determined to go on with it despite us knowing she and her fiancé are not... endgame. It's an audacious move, and it pays off! I do think the resolution itself felt a bit rushed, but the build-up was excellent, particularly the way we get the entire story of Javi and Mari with some well-place flashbacks.
So. Javi and Mari met in college at the Latin American Student Association (Mari is Brazilian-American, and Javi is Puerto Rican). The attraction is THERE but there's always been one reason or another for them to not pursue anything further and remain friends— other relationships, being in different places life-wise and literally, Mari's father stifling her, Javi's insecurities. Javi puts it best when he says "our chemistry isn't the problem— but everything else is". And that's what makes makes the relationship progression between Javi and Mari believable and electric regardless of them being "just friends" for so long, and the times they skirted the line before were not... well thought out. At all. Ultimately, it's clear Javi and Mari have always known each other better than anyone else, but what they realize is they can make each other better— a friends-to-lovers journey I really came to enjoy.
As for the sex, the sex scenes are super solid and not at all tentative even when Javi and Mari in their "fuck around and find out" era because attraction was never an issue between them. Standout scene was a QUITE desperate door bang that no one can shut up about afterwards lol.
Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam Books for the advanced copy.

This book gave me the ick and I am so sad. 1.5 star rounded
Mia Sosa is an auto buy author for me and I have always loved her humor and writing style. I saw this available to request on NetGalley and was so dang excited when I got approved for the advanced reader copy.
So much of this book and storyline just didn't make sense and made me feel icky so let's talk about
1. Javi and Mari are supposed to be best friends who trust each other's opinions on their respective partners, but Mari doesn't even tell Javi she is dating anyone until she is already engaged and the wedding is 8 weeks away???? That makes zero sense.
2. Javi is supposed to be Mari's 'Best Man' but again, he doesn't even know she is dating anyone until 8 weeks before the wedding????? WTF
3. Javi never saw Mari as a friend. He wants her. He wants to date her. He keeps his friendship with her for the sole purpose of hopefully getting into her pants one day and I hate that so much.
4. What do you mean Javi agrees to help Mari with the wedding because he wants to destroy the wedding to make Mari fall in love with him????? This man needs a therapist because that is toxic af. Why can't you just be honest for once?
5. The flash backs of their 'friendship' just highlighted the fact that these two were never friends. Also Javi never dumper Mari cause they never dated so the title makes no sense
I am so sad right now
I was so looking forward to a new book from Mia Sosa and this book just missed the mark for me so much. It highlights everything I don't like about friends to lovers and show just how toxic these stories can be.
I ended up finishing this book purely hate reading it. I wish I could go back in time and not request this book, but I will always be honest and give my honest opinions on books...

I absolutely love Mia Sosa and I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to review this book. I loved the story and it had all of the things that draw me to Mia's writing - the banter, the chemistry, the plot that draws the reader in, causes the reader to be emotionally attached to the characters and to root for their HEA. In addition to all of that, with Mia I also always learn something about other cultures and I love it. I loved both of the main characters and I really despised one of the lesser characters as I beleive Mia intended. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Giving this 2.5 stars is hard for me, but I really don't know how to rate this any higher.
I have really enjoyed Sosa's books in the past. I love Latin culture and seeing Brazilian culture represented in books, so I was super excited when I picked this one up and realised Mari was Brazilian American. I did wish there were more tidbits of the cultural aspects in the book, both Brazilian and Puerto Rican.
Mari was a compelling FMC. I loved her go-get it attitude and how confident she was. I wish she would have done something about her deep-rooted issues with her father much earlier in the story.
Now, what I really did not like:
Javi and Mari's messed up "friendship" if one can even call it that. Neither one of them wanted to be friends, yet the relationship never developed into more because Javier made up excuse after excuse to push Mari away. Starting by making up a fake girlfriend to ghosting her for 6 years and then never reaching out and leaving it up to chance that they come across each other randomly, rekindling their relationship almost as if those 6 years had never happened. And once they become friends again, whenever they hooked up, he continued to say he didn't deserve her YET. So their whole 14-year-long friendship is basically mutual pining with Javier leading her on and only actively pursuing her when she is engaged to be married to someone else.
This leads me to the whole wedding part. I can sympathise with Mari's struggles and decision to marry someone for stability (especially emotional stability, which had been something she struggled to find with Javier). However, she jumped the gun when she got engaged to another man while still clearly having feelings for Javier and not being able to cut him off from her life entirely (which is what should have happened if she didn't want the wedding to be a disaster).
During the lead up to the wedding, Javier was an asshole for trying to rile up Alex and looking for ways to sabotage the wedding somehow. I thought it was such a gross way to go about it. He had multiple chances to come clean with Mari, and he blew each and every one of them time and time again. Sure, Alex was also an asshole at times, but I can't fault him for being annoyed with Javi when the guy was actively trying to get between him and his fiancée. Of course, after the big reveal, it changed things, but Javi had been an ass long before that.
I honestly struggle to see how Javi and Mari could have a happy ending at the end of the book. I think they both needed to work through their issues, and they needed time apart from each other before trying to make it work together.
The jumps in the timeline also didn't fully convince me that they would work together. I think there should have been more of their time in the present day and more scenes with Javi and Mari interacting as friends or even as people pining for one another to make the resolution to the story more believable. Also, for a book full of drama, it was very low angst.
Sadly, this one fell short of my expectations - even the title seems random (Javi ghosted Mari. He never dumped her).

This is such a sweet, and frustrating at times, book. Here we follow Javi and Mari from when they first meet in college and through being young adults. They both love each other deeply, but neither will acknowledge it nor act on it. Things boil over a couple of times for Javi and Mari, but right after they both pull back. It takes machinations of others to bring them together for good.
Guillermo is the best member of Sesame Street there never was!
This was my first book by this author and I don't think it will be my last.
Spice: 2/5
Fun: 4/5
Overall: 4/5

I was very excited to read this new novel by Mia Sosa!! From the getgo you can feel the chemistry between Javier and Marisol. Their connection was ~*~electric~*~ the entire time and I loved their commitment to a bit, undying loyalty to each other, and that despite any differences on paper they are undeniably the same morally and emotionally.
This book was a fun dual-timeline, friends-to-lovers, sorta second (third? fourth?) chance romancey vibes. I liked their unpredictable behavior and always keeping each other on their toes. I felt like there could have been literally any amount of vulnerability from Javi sooner but I’m glad they FINALLY got there.
The backstories of both Javi and Mari were not super developed but I am glad that the ends were tied up by the end! I really just liked their friendship so much. <3
Thank you so much, NetGalley and Putnam books for the eARC. :)

Unfortunately this one didn’t really work for me. I loved the college flashbacks and watching them catch feelings for each other, but they were both so resistant at literally every instance at communicating and trying to build something together. I also could not get down with the fact she’s engaged to be married until literally 99% of the book. SHE LITERALLY GOES TO THE ALTAR WITH THE OTHER GUY. I’m sorry if you suppress your feelings and can’t commit to each other for like 10 years and don’t show me any happy, committed, and romantic moments until the epilogue how can I buy into the HEA?
Javi was down bad and he really made the book for me, but the way he ghosted her kinda rubbed me the wrong way.
This felt like a pretty middle of the road romance and I’m sad I didn’t like it more.
Thank you penguin group Putnam for an arc.

The vibes for this book were a mix of when Harry Met Sally and my best friend‘s wedding but with more family drama.
Javi and Mari meet in college. There’s instant attraction there but Javi tells Marie that he has a girlfriend and friends zones himself. Mari thinks Javi is really attractive, but if he just wants to be friends that’s fine with her they will become best friends.
Their relationship takes twist and turns throughout eight years of their friendship until the last hurtle, Mari is getting married and not to Javi. Now Javi needs to decide if he wants to let Mari go or prove to her that he’s always loved her.
I love Mia Sosa’s writing and I literally laughed out loud at a number of parts in this book. Those side characters were just excellent!
Thank you to @natgalley @miasosa and @penguingroup for this ARC!

This book is a freaking delight! I listened to the audiobook (thank you, PRH!) and I think it’s the best way to experience this story. I learned how to actually pronounce Javi and Mari (definitely not how I was saying them in my head), and while that might seem like a small thing, their names sound so good together and are so euphonically satisfying that it really added to the experience.
When Javi Dumped Mari is a dual timeline, friends to lovers romance with major My Best Friend’s Wedding (but with an HEA!) and When Harry Met Sally vibes. I didn’t love the early flashback scenes from their college years and was a little nervous we’d stay there, but thankfully the “past” timeline moves quickly into their post-grad lives and leads up to the summer before Mari’s wedding to Alex (I think that was his named LOL).
The second half of the book is what really made me fall in love. The first half was a solid 3.5 stars — enjoyable but not unputdownable. But the back half had me laughing out loud and kicking my feet and rooting so hard for these two. And I really loved the ending. Overall 4.5 stars rounded to 5
Read for:
- Friends to lovers
- Dual timeline
- Opposite attract
- It’s always been you
- When Harry Met Sally x My Best Friend’s Wedding vibes
Audiobook: Can’t recommend the audiobook enough. The dual POVs are performed by Gisela Chípe and Andre Santiago, and both bring so much heart to the story. Gisela even shares Mari’s Brazilian heritage!! I LOVE when narrators reflect their characters' backgrounds — it adds authenticity and spotlights new, unrepresented voices. Another A++ cast from PRH Audio.

I just finished When Javi Dumped Mari by Mia Sosa, and it was pure joy from start to finish. Mari is fiery, hilarious, and totally lovable, and watching her take charge of her own story after heartbreak was so satisfying. It’s the perfect mix of romance, revenge, and finding your voice.

FIVE STARS!!! I absolutely adored “When Javi Dumped Mari”. Mia Sosa knocked it out of the park with this one!!
The title being a play on “When Harry Met Sally” I knew I was going to love it. The story follows the friendship to lovers journey of Javi Beaz and Mari Campos., and it hit ALL the right notes. The characters felt so real and relatable. Javi, theater loving nose to the grindstone guy doing all he can to make it. Mari Campos having her life already laid out for her, constantly working towards her father’s approval while making her own way as a successful entertainment attorney. Their tell it like it is group of friends who I want to hang out with on the regular after reading this.
Mia Sosa writes stories that are incredibly believable and relatable. The banter between Javi, Mari and their friends had me rolling through out the story. I laughed, I teared up and I found myself really rooting for these two to get their HEA. The twists and turns this dual timeline dual POV story takes keeps you turning the pages. I truly never wanted to out it down.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin || Putnam Books for this digital advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
“When Javi Dumped Mari” is out June 24th!!

Mari and Javi have a unique relationship. Met in college - could not stand each other. Became best friends. They even contemplated a relationship but were never on the same page in life. They both hid their love for each other until the very last minute in hopes someone would finally reveal their true feelings.
It had me in all the feels frustrated, happy, laughing and worried.
