Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me this opportunity to preview this book. I have to say that this book was unintentionally awkward at times. Or maybe it was intentional? Either way, I’m still very much confused, especially with the title??
Javi and Mari meet in college and become fast friends. Here comes the awkwardness, he becomes insecure with himself and ghosts her for 6 years!! They randomly bump into each other and rekindle the friendship. They agree on this weird relationship pact to approve of the others love interest, while both are secretly pining for the other but never making a move. That is until Mari announces her engagement to another man and that lights the fire in Javi.
I wanted to love this book but I just didn’t feel the chemistry or connection between Javi and Mari. They are complete opposites, not to say opposites don’t attract, but these two did not convince me. And I’m still confused about the title!! Overall if you enjoy friends to lovers and a bit of a slow burn this might be the read for you!s

Thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam | G.P. Putnam's Sons for giving me an ARC of this book. I really enjoyed this book and I flew through it. This book was funny, tender, and there was enough conflict to make it feel real. It was great to see that Latine representation as well. The swapping of POVs was a great choice that worked here and really stretched the conflict.

This book was a lot of fun: definitely the slowest slow burn romance I have read in a long time. The plot develops along two timelines (plenty of flashbacks!), and I really appreciated the chapter headings that helped to keep things straight in my mind. Javi and Mari meet in college, become best friends, and for the next ever so many years fetch up in each other's lives and act on their pact to approve each other's romantic relationships with others. Mari is an entertainment lawyer, and Javi is on the outskirts of the industry with an unfinished musical he's been writing forever. Their banter is top-notch, and there are a few very spicy physical encounters. It became harder and harder to believe that they were still resisting the pull toward each as the story continued, though admittedly they both had some major baggage from other aspects of their lives (Mari's job, her family, Javi's ambitions, etc) also getting in their way. A solid four star read!
I was given an ARC by Netgalley and volunteered to write a review.

This was my first Mia Sosa book and I had so much fun with it. If you are a fan of when Harry meet Sally this book is for you!.
This book is the perfect rom com with two time lines past leading up to present and it was so much seeing the main characters friendships blossom. It was also a little frustrating (in the best way) seeing how the main characters couldn't see the magic they had together. Loved how it started and loved how it ended

Thank you G.P. Putnam's Sons for providing this book for review via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
When Javi Dumped Mari is the second book of Mia Sosa’s that I’ve read and I absolutely loved both books. This book had so much funny banter/dialogue between the characters, it was realistic, and the plot was so engaging. For “right person, wrong time” stories, I want to truly feel that the characters are in a better place and have resolved whatever conflict or concerns prevented them from being together in the first place and I’m happy to say I felt that in this case. Mia had a wonderful balance of showing and telling with her characters, where she displayed their growth through different actions but also sometimes had them explicitly state it (which makes for wonderful quotes to highlight and reflect on, haha).
I will say, the first spicy scene did throw me off guard because it didn’t initially feel like it matched the vibe of the book. There weren’t too many spicy scenes in this book but when there were, they were quite steamy!
There were so many themes and lessons in this book that I loved exploring:
- Managing self doubt
- Healing amidst a relationship
- Truly knowing someone inside and out
- Complex familial relationships
- Career aspirations & pressure to succeed in life
- The importance of communication
- Going after you want
and so much more!
If you’re looking for a lighthearted and fun friends to lovers read, this is definitely the book for you. The audiobook was phenomenal and really helped bring the story to a new level so I’d highly recommend listening! If you can read the ebook/physical copy and listen to the audiobook at the same time, that’d be the best experience so that you don’t get lost amidst the flashbacks.
Can’t wait for the next book Mia writes!

Many thanks to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam's Sons for providing me with an eARC of When Javi Dumped Mari in exchange for my honest review!
I had a blast with the comedy and the heart of the only other Mia Sosa rom-com I've read, The Wedding Crasher, so I was looking forward to When Javi Dumped Mari. And thankfully, this has turned out to be another lovely ride, getting me invested in the touching substance of the MCs' relationship while we're jumping back and forth between their college past and their adult present. I get to witness how much they've developed since that years-ago period where they were significantly more immature, where they weren't ready to fully commit themselves to a romantic dynamic together, and then I'm able to watch how they contend with the consequences of that past in the now while Mari has a fiancée in her life. I'll admit that my personal feelings towards the friends-to-lovers trope have grown complicated, but I can put that aside in order to appreciate the humorous and affecting meat of this tale.
It's entertaining to read this after I'd dived into The Wedding Crasher, considering the latter rom-com features a karaoke sequence revolving around Ginuwine's "Pony" that I couldn't help but think of during a dancing contest in When Javi Dumped Mari. Then there's the knack that Sosa apparently has for weaving wedding shenanigans into both of these books, which makes for some good old hilarity. It's elements like these that keep me smiling and laughing through this rootable romance. And the beats in which it allows itself to plunge into the steam are appropriately hot, providing a satisfying payoff after the chemistry and the buildup that we've been following between Javi and Mari.
Overall, I'm officially rating When Javi Dumped Mari four out of five stars. I'm very glad to have returned to Sosa's bibliography here, and now I'll be even more determined to continue checking out her work.

Friends to lovers but really they have been pining after each other for the whole time. It has never need the right time but when Mari moves on and gets engaged to another man. Javi is then determined to show Mari her fiancé is not right for her.
I do love the character’s chemistry and banter, they are very fun together in the flashback chapters. The resolution is satisfying.

If this isn't Mia Sosa at her best, then I truly don't know what is.
This is definitely for this friends to lovers fans. She brought in the humor and heart throughout the entire book, I couldn't put it down. I loved getting t o read about their backstory and see the mutual pining between the two. I can't wait to see what's next in store.

This was such a fun read!! Javi and Mari’s relationship was fun to read and I loved that this book was dual pov/dual timeline. Be warned that this book is a slow burnnnn lol and I liked it but I would’ve loved if it literally wasn’t until the last couple of chapters that Javi and Mari finally have their conversation about their feelings for each other. Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for my copy in exchange for an honest review!

Another delightful and steamy romance from Mia Sosa! I loved the "My Best Friend's Wedding" meets "When Harry Met Sally" vibes this story gave me. I thought the dual timelines really worked well and allowed the reader to truly see how Javi and Mari's relationship blossomed from friendship to something more. I truly appreciated the Latine community and culture included so naturally and lovingly in the story.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House/Berkley for an advanced reader's copy of the book.

Friends to Lovers is not one of my favorite tropes, but I’ll read anything Mia Sosa writes, so I had to check this one out.
I enjoyed the dual POV and dual timelines. I liked both characters. Even though they both made some stupid decisions, they were still very likable and I was rooting for them both.
It was a fun, easy read – perfect for summer! Also, that cover is *chef’s kiss*

4.5 stars overall
When Javi Dumped Mari was my first book by Mia Sosa and I am hooked on her writing! This book gives When Harry Met Sally x My Best Friend's Wedding x Always Be My Maybe vibes. There are many laugh out loud moments. I loved the dual timelines and seeing how much Javi and Mari really cared for each other that it harmed their friendship so much it couldn't progress to more than friends. In the end everything was right and as it should be. This is definitely a must read and I can't wait to read Mia's next book!
* Friendship Pact
* Dual Perspectives and Timelines
* Afro-Latine Rep
* Friends to Lovers
* A Wedding To Stop

This is a friends to lovers, second chance romance that follows a dual past to present timeline highlighting Javi and Mari’s meet cute in college as well as their current friendship. When Javi is blindsided hearing of Mari’s engagement, they navigate their feelings that have been longingly suppressed.
I thought this romance was a “middle of the road” read. It had sweet moments, and it also had sections where I was getting bored waiting for these two to use communication skills and to finally get together.
I do think a lot of other people would like it more than I did, and the cover is beautiful!

I absolutely loved this book! I really enjoyed the jumping timeline that let us see all of Javi and Mari’s friendships through the years! Javi and Mari both showed individual growth which was so good to see. Maris other friends were so great too! I only wish more would have happened to Alex because he deserved worse lol. Overall thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend!

"Para siempre" 🥹
This brought me out of my romance slump! I adore Mia Sosa and she managed to make me swoon while including my top and least favorite tropes in one book! I love a good friends-to-lovers with timeline hops, but this got messy with the love triangle engagement. Javi and Mari's banter was top notch and once the tea was spilled, it was easy to overlook what some might consider to be emotional cheating. I loved how they supported one another over the. years, and encouraged each other's dreams. Mari is a baddie and Javi knew she could fight her own battles, but was right there to back her up if she needed it. Mia's books always remind me of home with the Puerto Rican spanglish because she portrays what my family actually looks like.

What to expect:
• Friends to Lovers
• Dual Timelines/POVs
• A Wedding to Stop
• Afro-Latine Rep
Right person, right time, and happily ever after, right?
Welllll… What if the right person is your best friend that you’ve shared a pact with, and the timing isn’t quite right when you’re marrying someone else?
Mari knows what she wants, and is done waiting for Javi to admit his feelings. She wants someone who can stand on what he wants for her, as she should!
Javi now feels like he’s in a place to tell Mari, but she’s marrying someone else. Javi won’t let that stand though!
The ride this rom-com takes you on is a mixture of funny, romantic, secret pining, and absolute chemistry… did I also mention some steam?
I loved the Latine representation (especially the Portuguese and Spanish being spoken) and dual POVs/timelines!
Thank you Mia Sosa, PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this as an ARC!

I loved the dual timelines and getting to see how their relationship grew over time. The tension, the longing, the slow-burn; everything was delicious. This is a must read for those who love second chances, unspoken feelings, best friends to lovers just a top tier trope.
The best part was the Afro-Latine representation. Looking forward to reading anything that Mia Sosa writes.
Thank you to NetGalley PENGUIN GROUP Putnam/G.P. Putnam's Sons for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

When Javi Dumped Mari by Mia Sosa was such a fun, friends to lovers, second chance romance.
This was another win from Mia Sosa.
She weaves a heartwarming and hilarious tale of unexpected romance that's just so sweet. The chemistry between the main characters is electric, and their banter is pure magic. Sosa's writing is engaging and filled with humor, making this book a true page-turner. The story has just the right mix of laughter and heartfelt moments, making it a perfect escape into the world of romance.

3.5 stars. A perfect friends to lovers romance novel; you know they will end up together in the end but the author really strings you along until the bitter end!

When Javi and Mari first meet in college, they're quick to realize they're destined to be in each others' lives for forever... as friends or lovers is yet to be seen. Mari is a perpetual heartbreaker, not looking to settle down until after she's finished her education, and Javi doesn't want to get tangled into a relationship either so he lies about having a girlfriend, cementing their status as friends. They're a constant in each others' lives for years. And sometimes it seems like they could be more, but Javi, as a struggling artist thinks he's not good enough for the hot shot lawyer, Mari. When he's finally finished his musical and ready to step up and be the man for Mari, she introduces him to her new fiancé... a seemingly perfect man and her father's protege. But Javi is determined to help Mari make the best choice--hopefully him.
A spin on When Harry Met Sally and the old adage of whether men and women can ever be just friends, this books is a true, classic friends-to-lovers romance. It's a fun ride, with dual POV and dual timelines wrapped up in a single, colorful package. I loved Javi and Mari and it was so clear they were destined for each other. I did wonder if (minor spoiler) Mari's fiancé hadn't done X thing, if Mari would have left him for Javi, though. I kind of wish her fiancé had just been a great guy, just not the guy for her, and she had reached that realization totally on her own (or with the help of Javi) and no inciting incident. It's so funny to me that all of Mia Sosa's books center around weddings! But I'll keep reading them.
Thanks to Putnam for my ARC and finished copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
