I had to give this book 4 stars. It's perfect. Takes place around one of my favorite holidays, Halloween, in a small English town. Great, spooky thriller with twists I honestly never saw coming. Must purchase the physical copy when it comes out for my bookshelf! :)

4 stars-Hannah Richell is a master at creating a dark and moody atmosphere. One Dark Night is set at an exclusive private school deep in the dark woods. Students from the school are out on Halloween in a folly near campus. Detective Ben Chase is called in because a girl is found murdered with words written all over her arms. He soon finds out that the dead girl is a student at the private school where his ex-wife is a counselor and his daughter is a student. Oh, and his daughter was at the party! The entire campus is interviewed and secrets come out. The author does an amazing job of capturing the feelings and thoughts of teenagers and brings this book to a strong conclusion with a couple of big plot twists that I did not see coming. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the arc.

this was a pretty average thriller experience for me. i enjoyed the small community, but the characters themselves were two dimensional and the plot was somewhat predictable.

Fantastic read! Most of the time I was on the edge of my seat. This book had as many twists and turns as the twisted curves of the roads of Sally in the woods. . Dark looming tower and Halloween frights add to the building suspense. Cozy up, settle in for a really enjoyable read.

This book was very good. From the mystery, mild horror and suspense to the twist at the end, I could not put it down. You grow to love the characters. I thought I had it figured out and I was wrong. Great work.

Thanks to Simon and Schuster for the advanced reader copy.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was an easy read and kept me guessing through the plot. I thought when I had reached about 80% of the way through I had it figured out but ended up surprised.
The novel begins with a death of a student at a small private school. Sarah's death occurred at a party in the middle of the night out in the woods. Investigations begin and Ellie, a student at the school, has her father working as a detective on the case and her mother working in the school as support for student. The plot thickens as Ellie lies to her parents about her whereabouts the evening of the party.
I really enjoyed the development of the characters. The author did a great job keeping me on the edge of my seat. I do wish the ending had not left me wondering where the story was going but maybe there will be a sequel?
Overall 3.5/5 stars

Teen years are hard enough without moving to a private costly boarding school. And to make it worse her mom works there. But it is her chance to follow her passion for art. Ellie slips out to go to a Halloween party where a student dies. The story follows the mystery of who kills and why. The book was interesting with a combination of mystery and the family and friend relationships. So glad I don't have to be a teen again. It is such a hard age.

4.5 stars for me!
This book had me hooked and every time I thought I knew what was going on, another twist proved me wrong! I loved it!
I’m excited to read more books from this author!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

Thrilling read that definitely had my heart pounding. The writing made the plot seem realistic, which made it easier to read. It did sometimes feel like there was a lot to keep track of, but it wasn’t too difficult. Very spooky, and will be a fun Halloween read!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

Beautifully written, very spooky atmosphere, & I thought the map included at the start of the book was a fun bonus. The entire setting of the book was just really well done, I felt the English countryside gothic prep school vibes throughout the whole thing. I loved Rachel’s character, she was so real & endearing to me as a mom. Every time I thought I knew where this was going I was wrong & I ended up being very truly surprised by the ending!! It just had so many layers & I loved the thoughtfulness put into each little character & how everything tied together. I’m excited to have gotten to read this as an ARC, thank you to the publisher & netgalley!!!

Hannah Richell's book One Dark Night was an exciting chance for me to read my way back to my home, in England. I enjoyed her last book, The Search Party, so was very excited to be given the chance to read this one - thank you Netgalley! Set in South West England, a halloween party ends in death of a teenager. The suspense the author achives throughout the book is compelling and wonderful. The characters are well written, and the story flows well. She keeps the reader interested and entertained, weaving folk tales into the prose, and the darkness high, with haunted woods and ghost stories. I would highly recommend this read, and look forward to its release in August,

This thriller had me on the edge of my seat. It was enthralling and engaging. An excellent choice for any thriller lover.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review!

I was shocked! I had never seen what was coming!
One Dark Night had me hooked from the very first chapter. What an amazing suspenseful thriller! I loved all of the twists and turns that Hannah Richelle threw at me. There were quite a few characters in the book, but I never lost track of any of them. Great read!
Thank you NetGalley for giving me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!

I was very excited to receive this book as an ARC as it has all the elements that appeal to me: the backdrop of an English countryside, a gothic feel and an academic setting.
This one drew me in quickly as we learn that a young girl has been murdered in the woods adjacent to an elite private school. Everyone involved, from the students to the staff and the police are harboring secrets, adding to the suspense and tension. Halfway through, I (of course) thought I had it figured out, until the very end when there was quite the unexpected twist.
I’ve been reading a lot of thrillers lately and while I’m not likely to remember this one as a standout story (a more original title may have helped), it is still a very engaging read. This is a well-written, atmospheric novel and I really enjoyed the author’s style. It’s very fun, worthwhile read!
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance reader copy!

One Dark Night by Hannah Richell wove together elements of mystery, family drama and the supernatural. The book kept me on my toes just when I thought I had figured things out something else would throw me off course. If you are looking for a book that will keep you hooked and ponder long after you turned the last page this is the book for you!
Thank you Hannah Richell and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy!

One Dark Night was a fantastic suspenseful thriller. It is Halloween night in the small village of Thorcombe when a group of students from the local private school meet in the woods. By the end of the night, one of the girls is dead. This is told from the point of view of multiple characters, Ben, Ellie and Rachel. Ben Chase is the detective investigating the death. He and his ex wife, Rachel, the school counselor, soon discovers his daughter, Ellie, attended the party.
I enjoyed the plot twist and felt the characters were relatable and believable. This is an excellent book! I will certainly read other books by Hannah Richell

One Dark Night is a true thriller with numerous twists and turns which keep the reader on their toes throughout the entire book. What happens when a body is discovered surrounded by supernatural mystique and eerie overtones? It's up to the local detective and his school counselor ex-wife to determine the true cause of the horrific murder all while drumming up their own pasts and demons. The characters are very well written and leaves the reader feeling empathetic to each story line. About half-way through I too thought I had it all figured out only to be pleasantly surprised by the outcome and ending. 5 stars for this page turner.

I loved this one! Totally didn’t see the actual whodunnit coming and was hooked the whole time.
I was grabbed by the ghost story and the vague sighting of the white flash. Many references to the ghost and what she looked like held for speculation on many things. The web of stories that all get tangled up in the cities mess of history, secrets, and past unfolds in such a way that gives you just enough to move forward but just branches you out with so many more possibilities!
I really enjoyed how the various points of view really offered genuine insight from the different perspectives, but told the story from others eyes. What they saw happening. What their story actually said. Everyone always says there’s three sides to every story..yours, mine, and the truth.
This is a great book with a little spooky and a lot of thrill and enough drama to keep me on my toes. Definitely one I’ll be recommending!

One dark Halloween night, seventeen-year-old Ellie and a group of friends decided to party in the middle of the haunted forest. Everyone knew Sally’s ghost roamed the woods in her white dress, but that only made everything seem scarier. After daring each other to do crazy things, many partygoers left but a few stayed. That night, something bad happened with Sarah and Ellie. Since she had lied to her parents about her whereabouts, she threw away her bloodstained clothes and pretended nothing happened.
When Ellie found out Sarah had been murdered, she couldn’t tell her parents where she’d been because of the blood on her hands and clothes. Her mother was the school counselor, while her father was a local police officer, so both were involved in the intense investigation. Ellie reminded her friends not to mention she’d been at the party, and they covered for her. Her chances of not getting caught seemed good – until someone found a bag of bloodstained clothing, brought it to the police, and her father identified them as belonging to her.
Though it seemed like a cut-and-dry case to the police, her mother and father were both desperate to prove their daughter’s innocence. As the investigation continued, shocking events were revealed that seemed to put their beautiful daughter in a new light. Could their Ellie be capable of cold-blooded murder, or was someone else waiting to kill again?
Told through multiple points of view at different times during different days, readers are drip fed events that led up to Sarah’s murder and afterwards. I thought my suspicions on whodunnit were on target until, suddenly, they weren’t. Richelle did a great job hiding clues until the truth came out at the very end. This book will keep its readers on the edges of their seats.
Recommended for Adults.

This was a good read with a lot of twists and turns, but the ending was a bit anticlimactic. I had a lot of questions when I was finished, and wished there was at least an epilogue to tie them up.
