This was a hard one to rate and review. On the one had I thought the premise was cookie and cool, A Robin Hood descendant family, stealing for good in the war and beyond. But on the other hand things were utterly predictable and the "twists" were evident a mile away, so some of the suspense was gone. There was also a lot of moral grey area that I was involved in. Yes you are stealing for good, but is it acceptable? My moral compass was having a very hard time wanting to root for our main characters and then realizing I was rooting for robbers, it was hard. And they are very relatable and lovely characters, and what tragedies they went through in the war were heartwrenching. It is not my favorite Harmel, I am a huge fan of her books, but it is still an entertaining read. Also side note, I say the name of the book in Europe from The authors instagram and it is so much better. THis name is just not good enough: The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau, The European name of: All the Diamonds in Paris, is so much better and so much more relevant to the story. Because its not just about Colette, its bout everything an everyone that surrounded the diamonds.

Colette has been trained by her mother to be a jewel thief. The jewels that are stolen and the money is used to support organizations to help others. Set in a dual timeline you follow Colette during WWII and in 2018. Colette has some tragedies happen to her during her childhood and she lives with guilt and regret. As the story unfolds you see Colette's past and present intertwine, and decades old questions get answered.

Colette was such a strong character, she did many good things with the money that was raised by selling the jewels she stole from Nazis. In the 2018 timeline Colette sees a jewel in the museum that was last seen with her sister who was murdered. Colette believes that if she can trace the ownership of this jewel, she can finally get answers about who killed her sister all those decades ago.

I love reading historical fiction and this was an enjoyable read. There are revelations that were predictable, but I still enjoyed seeing them unfold.

I might have screamed when I saw I got approved for this arc on netgalley. Because- come on! Kristin Harmel is one of my favorite authors!

This book is SO unique. Colette is a descendant of Robin Hood and has spent her childhood being trained to steal from the rich and morally corrupt in order to do good in the world.

This book is dual timeline (which is my favorite), WW2, mystery, and romance. It’s beautiful. I loved it SO much and already preordered a physical copy to have on my shelves.

It was BEAUTIFUL. As is every book by Kristin I have read.

If you enjoy historical fiction, suspense, intrigue, and even romance, you HAVE to pick this one up. The way it all wove together was just incredible. I cannot recommend it enough.

This is story about love, loyalty, and forgiveness. It follows Colette Marceau, who is now almost 90 and living in Boston, after having left her native Paris at the end of WWII. Before leaving France, she tries to find out who betrayed her mother and who killed her sister, but she leaves without every finding the answers she sought. Throughout her life she has been a jewel thief in the hopes of rebalancing the scales, and righting some of the wrongs in the world. She has almost lost hope of ever finding out who killed and sister during the war, and why, when a clue of what happened all those years ago resurfaces, reigniting her desire to bring the killer to justice.

This book is an exploration of what is usually black-and-white territory. Does the end justify the means?

Another masterpiece from Kristin Harmel! Colette Marceau grew up in France with her younger sister Lilianne and her parents. Descendents of Robin Hood, Colette's mother, and ancestors believed in stealing from wealthy but cruel and unkind people and using the money for good. From a young age, Colette continued this effort and when we meet her at the end of her life we understand that she is still doing it. Life in France takes a tragic turn when the Nazis invade and this story is told in duel timelines: 1942 and 2018. Liliane disappeared and was thought dead. She died with a beautiful bracelet sewn into her nightgown, a twin bracelet was also made. When the bracelet turns up in 2018, Colette believes that she can finally find out what happened to her younger sister. A well-told, hopeful story about good people surviving unimaginable things.

I am generally a fan of Harmel’s novels, but this book simply eluded me. I didn’t like the plot and I’m not comfortable with the Robin Hood premise.

This was a disappointment. I’m looking forward to reading more of Harmel’s novels.

I love Kristin Harmel's books and was thrilled to read this ARC. Colette is a character you can't help but root for and trying to figure out what had happened in her past was really fun for me. I loved the different character perspectives and seeing how all the people came together as a part of each other's stories. I figured out some key "twists" but wasn't disappointed by that. The only thing I didn't love was the loose thread - the event that kicked off the whole story with her stealing the ring was never really resolved and I wanted that resolution.

Colette and Liliane were raised in Paris by their mother, Annabel, a jewel thief. Annabel gave most of the stolen jewels to an underground. organization that fought the Nazis. Unfortunately, Annabel was caught stealing a valuable bracelet set from a Nazi.

She never told him where to find the bracelets and took the secret to her grave. The mother sewed one bracelet into Colette’s gown and the other into Liliane’s gown.

On the same night that she was arrested, a man kidnapped Liliane. Several days later, her body was found without the necklace.

Decades later, Colette has carried on the jewel thief tradition in the United States Her jeweler friend, Marty, discovers that the missing bracelet is going to be on display in a Boston museum.

In order to find out more information, Colette enlists the help of Aviva, who is like a daughter to her. So she has to tell Aviva the whole history of being from a family of jewelry thieves, the kidnapping of Liliane and the bracelets.

Eventually, Colette attends the museum and sees the bracelet in person. She finds out information about at least one older gentleman that could know what happened to her sister. Everyone wants her to be cautious but at this point, Colette does not care about anyone’s feelings. She seems ruthless but I love that about her. I think she just wants justice for her mother and sister.

On this journey to find out how the bracelet ended up in the museum, Colette finds out so many secrets of other people. She even reunites with the son of the original owner. There are so many things that I cannot tell you. I highly recommend that you read the book to find out for yourself.

I love finding out secrets so I was hooked from the first page of the book. I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish “The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau.”

The ending of the book filled me with so much joy and hope. It was worth reading and staying up too late. Hopefully, a trip to Paris and expensive jewelry will be in my near future.

If you are a fan of mysteries and historical fiction, you will enjoy this book. If you are a Nazi, then you won’t like being reminded of being a sore loser again.

Wow! What a way to start 2025 but with an historical fiction book by the master Kristin Harmel! Her character driven plots grab you from the beginning which is set in war torn Paris with the Germans starting to arrest Jewish people. Your can feel their anxiety and terror with Kristin’s descriptions.
The history behind this plot are two jewel thieves that are descended from Robin Hood, to take for the wealthy (who are terrible people)and use the money from the sale of the jewels to help the poor and oppressed. It’s a wonderful story with twists and turns! I suggest you preorder it for your summer reading! Terrific!

Kristin Harmel does it again. Her books are full of tenderness, suspense, deep emotion and hopefulness. This book is no different. I couldn’t stop reading, I needed to know what happened next. You become so attached to the main character, Colette. You can almost feel her anxiety and sadness and happiness and giddiness. You are immersed in her world, in the best way. I will always highly recommend any of Kristin Harmel’s books. Without hesitation. Reading her dedication and acknowledgements and thanks in the book, makes me love it that much more. Amazing.

Another wonderfully told World War II era story from Kristin Harmel. A mother/daughter pair of jewel thieves in Paris work to help fund the protection of Jewish families during the Nazi occupation.. Tragedy strikes one night and the family is torn apart resulting in the youngest sister's disappearance. Told through a dual timeline, the oldest sister spends the rest of her life searching for answers to what happened. Suspence and long lost love are intertwined in this tale that keeps the reader wanting more and tugs at your heartstrings.

I very much enjoyed this book. Colette was a teenager in Paris during the war and survived by being a thief like her mother and grandmother before her. It was a great source of pride in each generation that they stole from the rich who were pro nazi and gave to the poor, helping Jews in the war effort. She lost her whole family during the war. We first meet Colette when she’s an older woman, and she’s stealing from a Nazi sympathizer at a charity gala, but her picture is in the palate the next day and she must confess to the young woman she considers a daughter. Together they volunteer for an organization that makes sure the holocaust will never be forgotten. Noticing a new exhibit at a diamond exhibit, Colette recognizes a bracelet she knows to be stolen from a Jewish family by the Nazis. Determined to find out who owns it she enlists her young friend in her quest and the two embark on an emotional journey that will change their life. Beautifully written this book kept my attention and I couldn’t stop reading. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Over time, the story unfolds of Colette and her need to find out who murdered her sister during the war and long buried secrets that continue to haunt her 70 years later.

I love this author and her books! I will say the story building was not as exciting or attention grabbing but once I made it past a third of the book I could not put it down! It is fiction yet so much of the book represents such historical accuracy. It was a great read and I highly recommend it.

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this newest novel by Kristin Harmel in exchange for my honest opinion. I felt like I was sitting on the sidelines watching this story happen because it drew me in from the first page. Even while untold atrocities were happening during WWll many were fighting back and trying to make a difference. A mother risking everything to steal valuable jewels to then sell and help fund the French Resistance. It was her way of contributing but it left her family at risk and changed the trajectory of all their lives. But, there is hope and this book is beautifully written weaving the past and the present and bringing it to a healing conclusion.

Another beautiful human story from Kristin Harmel. I love how she focuses of every day people who have incredible stories to tell.

This one focuses around Colette and is told in two timelines - one set during WWII, where Colette is a teen in occupied Paris stealing jewels from the Nazis to help fund the resistance, and one set in Boston in the 2010s, where Colette, now an elderly woman, is still trying to solve the mystery of what happened to her 4-year old sister, who was taken one night from their Paris apartment, and along with her, one half of a pair of diamond bracelets. When the bracelet that went missing when her sister was taken resurfaces in a Boston museum exhibit, Colette's story and journey take a drastic turn as the truth is finally revealed.

What makes this book so enjoyable is the balance of suspense and heart. The mystery keeps you hooked, but Colette's personal journey—her rediscovery of who she really is, her relationships, and her dreams—is what makes it truly engaging. Harmel's writing is fluid and approachable, making it easy to fall into the story and root for Colette every step of the way.

The setting adds a wonderful layer to the story as well. Whether it’s the chic Parisian streets or the cozy corners of Colette's life, Harmel’s descriptions pull you right into the world of the characters, and you’ll find yourself wishing you could visit some of the places she so beautifully paints with words.

I’ll admit right from the start that I struggled with this one. I normally love Kristin Harmel’s books, but this story was very hard to get into. It wasn’t Kristin’s writing because her writing style is incredible, as always. I believe what bothered me the most was the heroine supposedly descended from Robin Hood’s ancestral line, and she and her family members before her carried on the tradition of stealing from people who they believed deserved it. Now, I’m all for karma and horrible people getting what they deserve, but to spend your whole life as a thief and trying to justify it because you were told Robin Hood was your distant relative just seems odd to me. Also, the story lagged through the first 3/4 of the book, but then everything just magically fell into place in the last couple of chapters, making it feel far-fetched and rushed. Sadly, I didn't feel a connection with any of the characters in this book and that was very disheartening.

This must-read is a fantastic novel that lingers in your mind and heart long after you’ve flipped the final page.

Colette has dedicated her life not only to helping the marginalized but also to seeking justice for her murdered four-year-old sister, a tragedy that still haunts her. The novel alternates between 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris and 2018 Boston. This dual narrative adds layers of depth to the storyline, allowing readers to connect emotionally with both Colette and the family members and friends who shape her life.

As with all of Kristin Harmel’s works, the characters are incredibly well-developed, each one bringing their emotional weight to the story.
