I always love a book that takes place in the afterlife and underworld. Which I have no idea why I have such an obsession to this theme. Maybe it’s due to the human brain’s curiosity of what happens after one passes away. After all it’s the one thing no one understands until we experience it ourselves.

There a few things going for this book. The first being the fast paced setting. I love a book that picks up right away. I don’t like to be sitting around waiting for something to happen, give me the action! The second is the world building. I love Garr’s interpretation of the afterlife. The world building, while needs some tweaks, has a really great premise. Also the idea of the wardens and the hunters was definitely unique.

However, there were a lot of places this book fell short.

1. The romance - once again we have an instance of insta-love. I have no idea what is up with the year 2014 and writing insta-love romances. I mean seriously it’s not even realistic. Also the love-triangle! That is a no go for me, once again where are authors seeing people fall in love with multiple people at once? It’s exhausting falling in love with one person let alone two.

2. The too perfect characters - where are the flaws? The things that make these characters exciting? Nora is literally the perfect female in both looks and doesn’t have anything wrong with her besides her choice in men. She is literally normal, nothing exciting or unique about her. Jason is like a fricken ken doll, perfect in every way. Which is kind of creepy. There needs to be diversity and personality in these characters and there is nothing. It’s like they are made of cardboard.

3. The plot - yikes! Besides the one good thing going for this book - the theme - there are so many flaws and loopholes in this book. Also where is the rest of the book? It’s like one thing was solved and then nothing else happened for the rest of the book.

I really expected more and maybe my expectations are too high but is it too much to ask to have a book written without multiple issues with plot and character?

The premise was really interesting. I loved the concept of death wardens and soul hunters, and while the start was promising, I felt like the 2nd half of the book did not hold up to the first
