A huge thanks to Net Galley and Del Ray for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. It was truly a pleasure.

What I liked: This magic system was unique, clear, well developed, and easy to follow. The fight scenes were intense as they were exciting, and it's been a long time, if ever, I've read anything quite like it. Additionally, I am a sucker for a good enemies to lover's trope, and this did not disappoint.
What I didn't like: there were 2 chapters that I skipped through. I wish it were closed door and more longing glances instead of smut. Additionally, there was some strong language that wasn't necessary. Finally, this may be picky, but for some reason the FMC having red eyes and the MMC having purple-back hair felt off putting to me.

The Magic system of this book is so unique and incredible! Our protagonists are stubborn and fighting every instinct and I loved every minute!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. All opinions expressed are my own

You know what I don't like about ARC reading?
I have to wait EVEN LONGER for the next book in a series to come out.
Yeah, you could say I love Arcane Academy.
When I received an email asking to ARC read Elise Kova's newest read, it was a no brainer- I have loved her Married to Magic series, collected every special edition even.
Arcana Academy is VERY different than the Married to Magic series-the setting is darker, our heroine has seen and done horrible things by the time our story begins.
Speaking of our heroine, I adored Clara. She is strong, super smart, and very confident in her abilities. She knows her own mind and she doesn't take shit from anyone, especially our MMC Kaelis.
The magic system inn Arcana Academy is unique in it's own way- I've only ever read one other series that uses a card system for magic. This book uses tarot cards as the basis of its magic system. If you are more familiar with tarot than I am, you may understand the magic system quicker than me. Luckily there is a handy glossary with each card and its affect included in the back!
Elise Kova is the queen of slow burn. Not a single book in the Married to Magic series is instalove and Acana Academy is no different. You are going to have to suffer through that delicious slow burn, but it is so, so worth it in the end. 🥵
I can't say enough good things about every book I've read by this author so far- and Arcana Academy is no different. Thank you so much to the author for an ARC of Arcana Academy in exchange for my honest review. ❤️

I want to start off by saying that I am thankful for an opportunity to be selected to read an advanced reader copy of Arcana Academy. This book started off strong and had a really fascinating and unique world building and magic system. With that said, I really wanted to like this book and the premise of it, but I struggled to make the "why / hook" connection through out it, The writing and story was good, but I continued to ask myself throughout the book, "why should I care"? I felt like if there was an additional depth to engage the reader and make more of an emotional connection to why we should have cared in the beginning that the sister was missing and that there was a fake engagement, that it would have helped to draw me in as a reader. I don't necessarily feel like I needed more back story, but I felt like I was given pieces of the story and context, but no real reason why it mattered or why the elements in the story were important. I don't feel like the emotional connection to the story was there for me without the "why I should keep reading".

The story follows Clara Graysword, a woman with the rare ability to ink magical tarot cards. When a heist goes wrong, she’s facing life in prison—until Prince Kaelis, the headmaster of Arcana Academy, offers her a way out. The catch? She has to pose as his fiancée and enroll as a student at the academy.
The magic system in Arcana Academy felt incredibly unique, and I loved how it was woven into the story. The magical academia setting was everything I hoped for—detailed, immersive, and full of intrigue. I never wanted to leave that world or put the book down.
That said, I did feel like the romance took a bit of a back seat to the world-building. If you’re looking for something very romance-heavy, this might not completely satisfy that craving. But since I love detailed magic systems, academy settings, and intriguing character relationships, I still found it to be a worthwhile read. I’m glad I picked it up!

shut up. SHUT up. SHUT UP!!!
“Love me, hate me, but only look at me like my existence sets you on fire …”
this book was INCREDIBLE!!! start to finish it was amazing.
Clara was such a bad ass FMC. she took no shit and stood up for herself, with just the right amount of being able to be vulnerable and learn from everyone.
Kaelis, man. i can’t wait to learn more of his secrets hopefully in book 2. but this guy was mysterious, vulnerable, an ass, and i am just so intrigued by him.
i can’t wait to learn what lauren, alor, and (hopefully) silas accomplish in book 2.
the ending will have me spiraling for MONTHS.
thanks Netgalley and Elise for the ARC, no thanks that now i’ve read it 5 months before release date that i’m going to have an EXTRA long wait for the next book!

Another great book by Elise Kova! This series has a 'magic system' that is based on tarot cards, I found this to be pretty unique and unlike other fantasies. The FMC lands herself in some trouble, but ends up being offered a chance to escape the issues she faces via a deal with the head of the Arcana Academy. The romance is an enjoyable enemies to lovers, slow burn. Though I'm not usually a fan of cliff- hangers, the one this book leave has me excited to see how the story evolves in the next books!

Phenomenal ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s like if Yu-Gi-Oh!, one dark window and Harry Potter had a baby. The intricate magic system in this book is absolutely brilliant and not quite like anything I’ve ever read before.
Clara is in a prison when we start the book as she had been illegally making tarot cards, the tarot cards are used as the magic system and weapons. You can only create a card of a certain level if you’re at that level etc. Clara is an absolute beast at inking the cards and very very talented. She’s also extremely damaged & in constant survival mode throughout the whole book, this isn’t a typical ‘romance story’ it is more of a deep love story for her friends and family, she is loyal to her core and will do ANYTHING for her friends and family.
Clara presumes her sister is at the academy, her mother is dead, she’s taken to Arcana academy by Kaelis the head master. But all is not what it seems. Clara is forced to attend the academy and to pass as she is needed for a greater cause. She is literally constantly in survival mode and just wants to find her sister and be reunited with her family, the star crossed club. The found family will literally make your heart swell, I defiantly want more of the star crossed club in book 2!
Kaelis was a mmc who I actually couldn’t stand at the beginning, this is TRUE enemies to lovers!! He confused me throughout a lot of the book actually but I feel there is much much more to him than meets the eye. He was a man down BAD but I also wanted him to be a bit more ballsy with Clara and his feelings towards her. Although his mouth, some of the things he said to Clara had me swoooooning badly!! The tension was annoying in parts cause you get to the point where you want to ram their heads together and say NOW KISS but when they do cross the line ohhhh boy I was very happy, think the best hate sex of your life.
I think there’s a LOT that will be explained in book 2 and things I hope are answered. I’m on the edge of my seat with the ending!!!
Thank you NetGalley for the arc! I can’t wait for book 2!!

Arcana Academy follows Clara, our main character, who can wield magic through tarot cards. After being sentenced to a a lifetime in prison for illegally inking cards, she finds a way to escape, but not without a price. Clara finds herself engaged to the prince, the headmaster of Arcana Academy, a school to teach students how to wield magic. The prince makes a deal with her- her freedom, for help to steal the most powerful cards inked from his father- the king.
The magic system in this book was unique and intriguing. I did, however, feel a lack of build up to the romance. The characters found themselves attracted to each other very early on in the book, despite them being enemies. I also feel as though the world building was a bit lacking, and not as immersive as I expected. The concept is brilliant, and I did enjoy the school aspect of it. I didn’t feel a connection to the characters as much as I hoped for, but I still found myself rooting for certain characters.
I still expect this book to be a popular one when it releases, and I can’t wait to hear others’ thoughts and opinions when it does!!

Arcana Academy by Elise Kova pulls you into a world where tarot-based magic isn’t just mystical—it’s a dangerous, high-stakes power struggle. With a richly built setting, the story follows Clara, a defiant young woman whose rare ability lands her in prison, only to be offered a chance at redemption within the elite Academy. But survival there is just as treacherous as life behind bars. Between ruthless trials, shifting alliances, and a reluctant partnership with the enigmatic Prince Kaelis, the book delivers a gripping mix of dark academia, political intrigue, and slow-burn tension.
The novel shines in its immersive setting, with the Academy’s strict hierarchy, cutthroat trials, and complex web of alliances making for a deeply engaging read. Themes of found family, betrayal, and survival are expertly woven in, and the book’s twists kept me on edge. However, the pacing is uneven—slow at the start, breakneck in the middle, then dragging toward the end. The romance, while promising, felt somewhat underdeveloped, and the spice felt more like an add-on than an essential part of the story.
Despite these minor flaws, Arcana Academy is a compelling start to what promises to be an unforgettable series. Fans of dark academia, intricate magic systems, and slow-burn enemies-to-lovers dynamics will find much to love. The cliffhanger left me desperate for book two. Find this on shelves July 22!
Thank you to Random House Publishing Group | Del Rey and NetGalley for the complimentary eARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book was amazing!! I am so thankful to have been one of the hundreds of readers given the opportunity to read it. It held my attention from the get to! So excited for more of this authors writing!

Arcana Academy has a refreshing take on creating a world filled with quite a unique magic system; which is based on the arcana cards. I found the way Kova describes the history, usage, lore, and details of how magic is created in this book to be enchanting and easy to follow.
The story is told through the experiences of Clara our FMC -- we are introduced to her in a horrid prison where she is trapped in filth and darkness. Rather quickly the story starts to explode into light and our journey begins and takes us to the academy. I enjoyed Clara and her journey as she tried to find answers to the mysteries that have plagued her life. Her evolution throughout was paced well with a few stumbles here and there. While you get to see her relationships evolve with the other initiates, I do wish we would have had more time (whether through flashbacks or another narrative) to bond to her initial crew and understand the depths of their relationships.
The evolution of her relationship to the MMC was an enjoyable slow burn. The MMC Prince Kaelis who is the headmaster of the academy -- is a brooding and multilayered character who has mysteries to his past and very existence that I have genuine high hopes will be explored in more detail when the second in the series comes out.
The romance had good banter, and the political tensions felt palpable which added to the slow burn. However, by the time we get to the spice, it somehow feels a tad bit forced. While the spice was well written -- if there had been more tense small interactions leading up to the explosion it would have felt more natural.
Overall Arcana Academy has potential to be a truly solid and great series, Kova did a wonderful job creating something unique in a competitive genre. I am rather excited to see where the series goes from here and have genuine high hopes that the second will be better than the first.
Thank you to NetGalley, The author and the Publisher for granting me the opportunity to read and review this arc.
*Will be published to my IG and Goodreads accounts closer to release date.

I really liked this book, I don't read too much in this genre so it typically takes a good hook to draw me in but I thought this one sounded intriguing. I enjoy a fantasy book that involves an academy and has trials they have to go through, it often makes for a tightly paced book and this was no exception. I'd definitely be keen to read the next book when it comes out.

Enjoyed this one lots. A real page turner of a romantasy in the vein of Fourth Wing, Crescent City etc. Very much looking forward to the next one and thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

Elise Kova has written an amazing fantasy/romance. This is a new series that is based on tarot cards and in this world, special arcanist are able to wield and create tarot cards that have magical powers. These special individuals are then recruited to attend a school to learn how to better hone their powers and serve the crown. However, there are a few extra special individuals that can create cards that have only ever been myths.
Cara is an illegal arcanist who has been sent to jail. She escapes, but is now in a different kind of prison. She has now found herself in the arcanist school, where the crown prince who is the headmaster is stating if she claims to be his fiancé and help him create and steal these rare tarot cards to create a new world he will keep her safe from going back to jail.
It is a wonderfully written fantasy and the world building is fantastic. It ended on such a cliff hanger that I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Thank you NetGalley & Random house, Delray for this ARC!
I am absolutely blown away, from the very start, 2% in, I was absolutely enamored by the magic system & the FMC. The magic system in this book is truly unique & nothing like I’ve ever read.
I absolutely loved that it focused more on the magic system, the mysteries & the academy & LESS on the romance.. that’s coming from someone who loves good spice. The tension between Kaelis & Cara is so beautifully done that I truly didn’t miss the one million sex scenes you would normally encounter in fantasy. This is definitely not YA because there is a little spice but it’s very much earned after a slow burn of enemies to lovers.
I could not put it down the last 30%. I didn’t want to do my dishes, clean my house, fold laundry or mother my children. I wanted to rot in bed & see how it ended.
The ending has me absolutely spiraling. I must have read the last 3 pages 10 times. Jaw on the floor. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to get their hands on this while also upset that it’s not even published & I am begging for book 2.
“Don’t weep for an empty coffin.” ⚰️

Bravo! This book is absolutely excellent. I was blown away by how quickly I devoured it. Clara is an incredibly stubborn FMM who is determined to get exactly what she needs. While the book is dense and its pace can be challenging at times, the magic system more than makes up for it. It pulls you in and keeps you hooked. I’m completely obsessed with the series now and wish I already had the second book in my hands. This is definitely a must-buy for my friends and for my library. I can’t wait for its official release!

Elise Kova never disappoints. Arcana Academy is absolutely enthralling and grabbed me by the throat from chapter 1. I LOVED this book and I cannot wait to see where Kova goes after this.

Arcana Academy by Elise Kova is a captivating and enchanting read that will transport you to a world of magic, mystery, and adventure. This delightful novel follows a young protagonist as they navigate the challenges of attending a prestigious magical academy, where they must master their arcane abilities, forge new friendships, and confront the darkness within.

Another brilliant book from Elise Kova! I have read all of her books and this one is a new favourite! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book.
