I am a regular reader of Mr Riley's Wall Street Journal column which I wait eagerly for each week. I really appreciated this well documented, clear discussion on the effect of governmental actions on the "upward mobility" of black families from 1970 to present.
The author presents extensive evidence on how the upward trajectory of blacks, socially and economically, between 1940 and 1970 took a drastic downward direction because of the way the government interpreted desegregation, welfare policies and "affirmative action" at colleges and the workplace.
He backs up his findings with hundreds of references to other authors, commentators, social scientists, and economists. There are 26 pages of reference footnotes.
I would urge everyone to read this excellent book.

Over 25 years ago, I read "America in Black and White" by Stephan and Abigail Thernstrom, and since then I have been waiting for a better book on the harm that affirmative action has done to America's Black community, and now we have it! "The Affirmative Action Myth" by Jason Riley (a Black columnist for the Wall Street Journal) has written a simply outstanding book, that every American must buy and read. In his book Mr. Riley proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that a race neutral nation is far and away the very best option for our nation's Blacks. This book has been thoroughly researched and footnoted so there can be zero doubt that Mr. Riley's conclusions are 100% correct, and that the liberal idea of race preferences has been a total failure from the get-go!
