The novel is tightly constructed, and despite seemingly relying on familiar conventions of YA adventure lit, is still able to keep a few surprises up its sleeve. Furthermore, these surprises, once revealed, generally make sense within the larger context of the story (with one notable exception) and aren't simply there to throw the reader for a loop: the plot twists serve the greater story, not the other way around.
