WALKING NEW YORK by Stephen Miller is great fun. New York as seen through the eyes of Herman Melville, Theodore Dreiser, Jacob Riis, and many more is a mix of urban studies and lit-crit. If you are a New Yorker, you will love it. If you can't get to New York, read the book to see the real deal.
