Well, that was an fun/interesting, albeit short, read. A bit quirky with a rather abrupt ending that didn't exactly resolve much of what I wanted resolved in the end! I was rather taken with the main character (personality-wise) apart from his infatuation with Marion (but that could be the chains of the typewriter working there so, ho-hum).

A fun read and a great twist on the swashbuckling, pirate, steamy love tale. A must read for everyone who loves stories with a little twist.

My primary image of L. Ron Hubbard being that of a narcissistic crook who founded a fake religion to make money, I was surprised to actually like this book. It's very much of its time - very little SF of the period aspired to high literary status - but it's surprisingly readable and would be fine to curl up with on a rainy weekend. There's a nice mixture of humour - oddly enough, poking fun at himself and his fellow pulp writers, reasonably well-researched historical background (although his Spanish is a tad dodgy), and a fairly mainstream swashbuckler. The twist is that the protagonist knows he's a character in a book. .Others since, notably Tom Holt, have run with this idea, so it's lost its surprise value, but it still makes for reasonable entertainment.
