I enjoyed this installment of the Dark Olympus series after being a bit disappointed with the last two and I think it is because the spice was incorporated into the plot more so than the last few books. The story builds upon the greater threat to Olympus.

The title is so appropriate as this romance was very sweet; it is the story of Poseidon and Icarus and their forced proximity and captor/captive situation. The way these two approach their relationship felt honest and mature even with all the obstacles. The inclusivity, including pronouns, of this series continues in this book.

Thank you Sourcebooks Casablanca for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley.

This wasn't my favorite of the Dark Olympus series, but it was still very good. I liked the characters, but felt the story line was lacking a bit. Regardless, people are already requesting it and we've added several copies to our purchase list!

Sweet Obsession is definitely the sweetest of the Dsrk Olympus series, in my opinion. I related so much to both Poseidon and Icarus and their desires for different lives and wanting to be seen for their true selves, rather than the public perception of them. I loved the neurodivergent representation of Poseidon. I won’t spoil the ending, but I found it to be very satisfying, more so than the others in the series. I’m looking forward to the next books in the series!

I’ll be honest—I wasn’t completely sold on the last two books, but this one felt like a return to form for Katee Robert. While the romance is still front and center, there’s a stronger plot this time, and the characters feel more fully developed rather than just being driven by their attraction. This one finally balances the steam with an actual plot (yes, miracles do happen). The stakes are high, Olympus is on the brink of war, and amidst all the chaos, Poseidon and Icarus find themselves caught in a complicated, slow-burning connection that feels both intense and surprisingly tender.

Poseidon is the perfect mix of stoic strength and reluctant vulnerability, burdened by responsibility yet unable to ignore his growing feelings. Icarus, on the other hand, is fiery and defiant, but there’s a softness to him that makes his journey all the more compelling. His sharp tongue and rebellious nature make for a fantastic contrast to Poseidon’s more measured approach, and watching their relationship evolve from enemies to something much deeper was truly satisfying. Their dynamic—built on tension, banter, and undeniable chemistry—kept me hooked, and I loved watching their walls slowly come down.

Beyond the romance, the world-building adds depth to the story, with Olympus on the verge of collapse and old allegiances being tested. The stakes feel real, and for once, the external conflict isn’t just a backdrop for the romance but an integral part of the narrative. It makes the emotional moments hit even harder because there’s so much more at risk.

Is this a historically accurate retelling of mythology? Absolutely not. But does it deliver on drama, passion, and an irresistible slow-burn romance? Without a doubt.

I still love Katee Robert and the Dark Olympus storyline, but I think the couple just wasn’t for me. This was my first M/M romance, and I think I just don’t have a taste for them. I still look forward to the next book in the series though.

I’m reviewing this under the assumption that anyone reading has probably read the first seven books in this series. I’ve read and enjoyed them all, but some just hit harder than others (it’s Electric Idol, I’m still chasing that high).

This one was decent! I feel like it’s righting the ship (pun intended) after Dark Restraint, which I enjoyed, but I felt suffered a bit from featuring two characters from outside the original society of Olympus that we were introduced to. This one faces that issue as well since Poseidon was always such a mystery before this story. I also realize that much of this series has to be instalove to fit into the rapidly intensifying overarching plot, but the trope is just not my personal jam. If it was, this is a lovely example of that. It’s overall a sweet and serviceable entry in a series that’s continuously sexy and moody with a secret heart for the hopeful.

At this point, I’m eating these books up for crumbs that will lead me into the chaotic arms of Hera and Zeus’ book. Katee Robert, I love you, please release us from this wait (jk you can do no wrong, take your time, queen…but if you’d wanna drop some teasers…nah nevermind…right?).

In my view, "Sweet Obsession" fell short of expectations. I found it challenging to accept the connection between Icarus and Poseidon, as it seemed unlikely for them to develop such deep feelings for one another in just a few days especially with how things began. Additionally, the emphasis on their relationship appeared to take a secondary role to the struggle for power, making it feel more like a plot device than a fully realized narrative.

If Katee writes it, I’m gonna read it! The Dark Olympus series is my all time favorite. I love the way the author makes Greek mythology more current. My most favorite thing about Katee is her inclusivity with the LGBTQIA+ community. I can’t wait for the next book in this series to come out!

Post the dynamite ending of our last book, we find a seductive and sassy Icarus under the imprisonment of Poseidon, one of the three legacy titles in Olympus after the wall has fallen. What's a captive to do?

I was worried about this book in terms of the plot as we get closer and close to the end, however, I shouldn't have been. Robert continues to delight and amaze, weaving seduction, love, suspense and plot in stunning arcs. I adored the romance between Icarus and Poseidon. I loved seeing the Thirteen in arguing and coup-ing action.

Overall, a stunning fantastical read.

3.5

This is my first book by Katee Robert. I wasn’t aware that it was part of a series, so I jumped in right in the middle. Even though I didn’t know the characters or the backstory, I found it quite easy to immerse myself in their world. However, I think I should go back and read the earlier books. I’m excited to see what happens next, so I’ll definitely be looking forward to the rest of the series.

This is my first Katee Robert book. I heard about her from a friend. I didn’t realize it was a series and I came in smack dab in the middle. Not knowing who the characters were or what had been happening, it was fairly easy to immerse myself in their world. I do think I need to go back and read the other books though. This was also my first book that dealt with a male/male relationship. It was surprisingly tender and sweet. I want to find out what happens so I will absolutely be looking forward to the rest of the series.

The pairing of Icarus & Poseidon is unexpected and perfect! Who knew they would mesh so well while being so different. The story allows them to both come into their own.

So far, I think this is my favourite of the Dark Olympus series. I feel weird saying that, with it being an MM story and KR getting some really weird attention because of that, but that's not why I liked it so much. I liked it because I really loved the characters. It would have worked equally as well if they hadn't both been men. Poseidon is this absolute cinnamon roll of a man and Icarus is basically Astarion from BG3, but not a vampire.

While this is cinnamon roll/spiky prickly, it's also captor/captive, which I think could have gone really wrong. But KR was able to make it work in a non-gross, bad power dynamic way.

In addition to the romance, we're also getting towards whatever the finale of the political plotline will be, as there are only 2 books left in the series to wrap things up! Circe is basically knocking on Olympus' door, but things may not be as straight forward as they seem.

I am so enjoying this series! I can't wait to read the last two, even though I'll be sad that it's over.

It fills me with joy to get to continue to read Katee Robert. I always know I'm going to have a lot of fun with their books and Sweet Obsession was no exception. The twist of big, strong Poseidon being cared for by the small (but mighty) Icarus made the story unexpected and fun. I loved these two together and how acknowledged their power imbalance is. Katee will always write enthusiastic consent stories and I love them for it.
Of course, we're also paying attention to the strife in Olympus and the 13 which is looming and ominous in Sweet Obsession. Lots of "back room deals" in the cover of darkness and general sneaking around, planning and executing operations to save the city.
I know who the next book in the series is about and I'm checking NetGalley constantly to get my grubby little hands on it! I can't wait to see how *those* two manage a relationship.

Sweet Obsession is the eighth book in Katee Robert's Dark Olympus series. The book opens up immediately following the events of Dark Restraint. After helping his sister escape Olympus, Icarus has now fallen into the hands of Poseidon. Being held captive was not part of his plans but Icarus finds Poseidon to be much more than what he seems. Poseidon was not planning on having to look after a prisoner but with Olympus being at war he has no choice. Soon feelings develop and the two find they may be able to work together to help save the people of Olympus.

I really enjoyed this one. The previous book was not one of my favorites out of the series but this book got to what I love about the series. This probably was the most political book so far. We got a lot of detail on what to expect from the coming war that is being planned by Circe and the Aeaens. I really enjoyed Icarus and Poseidon together. They worked well as a team and their chemistry was off the charts. I was very interested to get to know Zeus a little more in this book. I'm really looking forward to the next installment that will be his story with Hera.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am not usually someone who enjoys a captive romance but Katee Roberts did such a wonderful job with the power dynamics between Icarus and Poseidon that this one worked for me. Icarus was able to be both a captive and someone with his own power in a way that was really interesting and made this story work!

One thing about me is I am trash for a grumpy guy who is actually a secret cinnamon roll so I adored Poseidon! I also liked his dynamic with Icarus and thought they complemented each other so well. I adored watching them fall for each other and learn to trust each other.

This whole series is so entertaining, spicy and romantic. I can't wait for the next installment. I love that while there is a larger story the focus of each book really is the romance between the characters. While some books have had elements that were a bit dark for me that was not the case with this one.

I thought there would be no way I would enjoy this more than “Neon Gods” which has been my favorite in the Katee Robert’s Dark Olympus series so far. Which is funny because as straight female I tend to gravitate toward male/female romance because that’s what I can easily connect with. I really liked the captive/captor trope. And I felt Icarus and Poseidon has a great push and pull chemistry.
Also the first few pages of the book where by using gossip headlines from an Olympus publication to basically says “here what you missed” in any of the other books in the series so you have a baseline of information for this story. BRILLIANT!
That being said I would recommend reading Dark Restraint before Sweet Obsession. As this books picks up right after Dark Restraint ends. With Poseidon holding Icarus captive.

I was already team "Katee can do no wrong' but this book might have put me at the top of that team!! I've loved the Dark Olympus series since I first found it and Katee just has a way of writing these characters/stories that have me dropping everything just to keep reading. Sweet Obsession was no exception to this, I started & finished the book in one day.

Poseidon & Icarus.. really just need a hug okay? In fact, they probably both need several hugs because these guys have been THROUGH it. Sweet Obsession picks up immediately where Dark Restraint ends - with Icarus as Poseidon's captive while Circe makes the Thirteen pace and worry about her next moves. One might think that their common enemy would help the Thirteen come to a mutual consensus on working together... but we all know it does not.

Anywho - while the Thirteen are bickering about who is the best (not really but also.. kind of), Icarus decides his best plan of action for survival is to seduce good ol' Poseidon and then use what knowledge he DOES have to get his freedom when this is all said & done. What he doesn't expect is for Poseidon to see RIGHT through his charade but still take him up on his offer anyways. What starts off as just sex quickly morphs into something more and honestly I was HERE for it. Katee knocked this story out of the park and if you made me rank it within the Dark Olympus series, it's easily tied for 1st with Wicked Beauty.

Big thank you as always to NetGalley & Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I’m still in shock that I even got to read an ARC of a Dark Olympus book y’all. Katee Robert is one of the first authors I discovered when I got back into reading & Neon Gods literally changed the game for me.

I loved Icarus & Poseidon’s story soooo much! This picks up right where Dark Restraint ends, with Icarus at the mercy of the thirteen and the sole person left to answer for his father’s actions to bring down Olympus. Up until now, Poseidon has largely been a mystery. So removed from everyone else, despite the few mentions of him in previous books, and the more we learn, the more we see that even though he may be one of them, but his ideals and his methods don’t align with some of their “shoot first ask questions later” attitudes. And sly, clever little Icarus may seem like he’s nothing but a pretty face, however the man has his own methods of getting things accomplished.

As Poseidon spends time with his captive, he can’t help but wonder about that pretty face. He knows he should stay far away, but Icarus is determined to survive Olympus at any cost… even if it means a little seduction on his part heheh. I was simply not expecting their dynamic to have me blushing so hard, but WOW!!! They were hot. Katee absolutely served here. I love the way they handle kink play in such a safe but spicy way.

And things in Olympus have certainly hit the fan. We’ve been building up to this action for a few books, with some truly vital moments unfolding at our feet, and I STILL couldn’t guess what the outcome is going to be. I’m on the edge of my seat at this point, white knuckling these books, and begging for a HEA (especially for Zeus and Hera).
