RuNyx can never do any wrong. Because this book? A FREAKN MASTERPIECE. Might be my FAVE OF ALL TIME. The butterflies I felt reading this book truly was insane.

Salem and Cazamir have that charm that is just so unique to RuNyx work. The chemistry between them was undeniable, and once again Ru manages to do this gaze between charcaters that will have you blushing through the page as if they are visibly staring at you. I’m not sure how she manages to do this every time but gosh does it always work.

Set in a world of Dark Academia, sizzling chemistry, dark themes, and intrigue, this book will have you on the floor with eyes on the page never stopping until the story is long over.

I was really excited for Enigma, it was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and sadly, it fell a bit flat for me. The mystery and initial plot are so intriguing but I didn’t feel we really got a whole lot out of it and the ending wrapped up so quickly! The romance between Salem and Caz developed so quick they went from what was supposed to be hate or rivalry to completely obsessed with each other with no real build up of tension or explanation on how they got to that point. I still had fun reading it and Runyx always has great pacing but I just didn’t love it as much as I had hoped.

Enigma by RuNyx pulled me in from the very first page with its deliciously dark academia atmosphere, slow-burning mystery, and emotionally charged romance. If you're a fan of secret societies, unsolved crimes, and characters with layers upon layers of secrets, this one absolutely delivers.

Set in the elite and eerie Mortimer University, the story follows Salem—a curious and aloof student of criminology, obsessed with cold cases—and Caz, a famous yet enigmatic artist with far more going on beneath the surface than anyone realizes. The world RuNyx created came to life so vividly in my mind that I felt like I was walking the halls of Mortimer myself. It’s gothic, it's moody, and it’s full of the kind of hidden darkness I love to sink into.

The relationship between Salem and Caz is intense, tender, and beautifully complex. Caz's quiet protectiveness and unwavering attention made him one of those characters you just need more of. Their connection felt earned, forged through shared loneliness and the unspoken things they slowly began to uncover about each other.

The side characters were just as compelling—I honestly wish this were a series, because I’d love to spend more time with Aditi, Baron, Melissa, and Jacob. There’s so much more to explore in this world and these relationships.

My only real gripe is with the ending. The buildup throughout the book was so well-paced and gripping, but the final revelations and wrap-up came a bit too quickly for my liking. It left me wanting just a little more depth and time to sit with everything that was uncovered.

Still, this is another win for RuNyx. Enigma is best read without too many spoilers, so I won’t give anything away—but if you enjoy a romantic thriller with gothic undertones, hidden identities, and plenty of dark secrets, this book is for you. Atmospheric, emotional, and filled with intrigue—Enigma was a gripping and immersive ride.

I absolutely love RuNyx’s writing, there’s just something about it that grabs me in and makes me addicted. But I found this book was a bit different to her usual books. I did really enjoy it but it did fall a bit short for me.

It took me a good 30% to get into the book. I found that the storyline didn’t flow very well and I was finding it difficult to figure out what was happening. I did actually go back and re-read the start to make sure I wasn’t being stupid and skipping lines.

There were some really really good parts in the book. I loved the mystery and Caz of course 🤭.

I found the romance between Salem and Caz suddenly started around half way in the book. I really love a big lead up to a couple getting together but I found we didn’t really get it. They met at the start, had a few interactions and then were suddenly dating. But their romance was perfection and I loved reading about it dearly 🥰.

The ending did fall a bit short as well, everything was just suddenly solved which is a shame. I won’t go into much detail as I don’t want to spoil anything.

RuNyx has a way of world-building and creating characters that feels fully fleshed-out, so when I read her books not only am I transported, I can also envision everything very clearly. I always feel her books are perfectly written to be movies, and in my mind they read cinematically. Enigma is no different. I could very clearly picture Salem, Caz and Mortimer University in ways that made the storyline quick-paced and entirely whole. I love this about her books!
This is a dark academia goldmine! Secret societies, possible hauntings, seemingly desolate beach-scape with ominous lighthouse. The mood was spot on. Salem and Caz are a not too slow, slow-burn romance, and have some great tension at the start. Caz may just be your new favorite dark and broody, tattooed, MMC. He has a dark past, he’s territorial, and he’s a mercurial artist. Salem is a curvy FMC, and I much appreciated an FMC that is not the usual body type.
Enigma had multi-faceted themes of found family, finding confidence in self, and learning to trust that really can speak to readers on a deeper level as well.
RuNyx never disappoints. Her books, to me, are great palate cleansers. You can pick them up knowing you’re going to have a hard time putting them down. They move quickly, and you can transport into her Gothic-themed worlds entirely. Perfect for a train ride books. Perfect for a rainy day in bed books. Enigma is a perfect entry level to dark romance books!!
If you loved Gothikana, you will love Enigma. However, if her Dark Verse series is more your cup of tea this might not be dark enough for you. Give it a try though!
Enigma was a joy to read. I was waiting for this after I saw it pop up as to be published and I was not disappointed. 12/10 recommend.

Salem is from a wealthy family that is surrounded by scandal. She attends Mortimer University and hopes to discover what really happened to her sister. Along the way she’s immediately drawn to a mysterious man & swept up in the prospect of a secret society.

Sadly, this was a miss for me which is disappointing considering I enjoyed RuNyx’s book Gothikana and this was a much anticipated read for me this year. I was drawn in with the prologue but by Chapter 2 I was already frustrated with the main characters. Insta-lust / attraction to a “dangerous bad boy” who she is turned on by when he makes threats or finds herself in pressured situations with him. I can usually enjoy that dynamic within a dark romance but I felt no chemistry between them. There really was no build within their romantic journey together. No longing, pining, and not much banter. Just bam…’attraction’. This book was also marketed as rivals to lovers. I didn’t find any real rivalry between them. A slight mention of family ties but that was it.

The writing style felt very different from Gothikana…Or maybe I just didn’t notice as much in Gothikana…I’m unsure, it just felt very different. Though, I’ve only read her indie published version of that book so, maybe the traditional publishing print reads differently. The tone of the story didn’t have as much of a dark ominous feel as her previous novel.

Did I read this book? Was it good? Was it what I expected? How did I like it? …. Take these questions and constantly sprinkle groups of them throughout the book. The amount of questions asked throughout felt over the top leaving nothing for the reader to ask for themselves. I found myself skipping when a grouping of questions would appear. I like to my own questions. I get the character is curious but also leave room for the readers curiosity & imagination.

I really wish I had enjoyed this more but sadly it did not meet expectations.

"Enigma" by RuNyx weaves a complex plot filled with mystery, romance, and suspense. The dark academia and gothic atmosphere added to its allure. Caz and Salem were absolutely swoon-worthy, with Salem’s character development standing out as particularly well-crafted. While I read frequently and can usually predict plot twists, this story—though mostly predictable—still managed to catch me off guard with one unexpected turn. It’s not a quick or light read, as it requires close attention, but the payoff is absolutely worth it.

When I started Enigma, I knew I was diving into a dark, mysterious world full of secrets. The atmosphere was gripping from the first page, and the murder mystery kept me hooked. While Caz’s POV reveals some truths about Mortimer University, Ru only gives small hints, leaving me eager to uncover more. My only critique is that the resolution felt a bit rushed after such a strong build-up.

I also love the romance between Salem and Caz. Their connection is deep, almost otherworldly, and their relationship feels like coming home. Caz accepts Salem completely, helping her discover parts of herself she didn’t know existed.

Ru’s writing is beautifully haunting, and I’m always excited to experience her stories. Her books are set in the same universe, and the way she captures sensations lingers long after reading. Enigma will always feel like a powerful, unforgettable experience.

Gothikana was one of my favorite books last year and I quickly fell in love with RuNyx’s writing style. So Enigma quickly became one of my most anticipated reads of 2025 and it did not disappoint!

Once again RuNyx creates a captivating and vivid setting that quickly pulls you into the story. I was immediately hooked from the prologue and couldn’t put this book down. The mystery begins right away with main character Salem coming to Mortimer University to investigate the death of her sister. Now Salem for me is one of the most unique and interesting characters I’ve read about. Since she was a child she has been obsessed with death and forensics and this leads to her having grown up as the black sheep of her family and a loner. This has shaped her to be a cold and aloof person until she begins to come into her own at Mortimer Univeristy.

Although Salem plans to investigate her sister’s death this quickly turns into a bigger story with a history of deaths linked to the school. Particularly when her first week at Mortimer she stumbles across a dead body and meets the dark and mysterious Caz. Their rivals to lovers romance was a big stand out for me. Caz has lots of secrets and Salem is too curious for her own good. Their interactions and connection were so intense from the start and the more we learn about Caz the more invested I became in his story. I loved their relationship and really think they were the perfect balance for each other. And we definitely see that as the book progresses.

This book was dark and suspenseful with an amazing mystery and was very emotional at times. I couldn’t put this book down and it’s definitely one of my favorite reads of the year so far! RuNyx for me will always be my go to recommendation for dark academia books. I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Enigma is a dark academia, murder mystery romance that follows Salem, a student at the prestigious Mortimer University who is trying to uncover mysteries involving her family.

The best part about this book was the writing and the dark atmosphere of the book. It was very descriptive and I could clearly see in my head the gloomy setting of the university on the edge of a cliff.

As a big true crime fan, I immediately loved the FMC Salem. She sees things differently than most people and can analyze a situation with a forensic eye. I loved her character development throughout the book, starting from a shy girl with no friends and stigma around her family to the woman she becomes at the end.

I looooved Caz the MMC. He is a broody, grumpy, mysterious, tattooed and incredible artist.

I wish we had more of Caz' POV. I get that he was keeping secrets from Salem (and us) but his POVs were my favorites I loved being in his head.
I also feel like the ending was rushed compared to the pacing of the rest of the book. The first 70% was slow and then everything happened at once, and I had a bit of trouble following what was happening.

I still had a great time reading this book and it surprised me in the best way.
If you love or are looking to get into dark academia, I highly recommend this book.

I’m a sucker for dark academia, secret societies and gothic vibes. When it’s done well. Unfortunately I personally find that I’m consistently disappointed by novels marketed as such. I go into them hoping to be sucked in, chewed up and spit out by the author but that rarely happens. *Sigh* It didn’t happen this time either.

First, I’ll say the cover is beautiful and it definitely grabbed my attention. I also loved the premise of the FMC being an oddity among the social class of her community. Salem is weird and loves all things related to death. I loved that she went into an elite university to study forensic pathology and investigate the suspicious death of her sister. There was an attempt to make the campus feel gothic and there were the standard ghost stories and tales surrounding the lore of the school.

Salem makes a few friends (for the first time in her life,) and meets Cazimir. He’s definitely an enigma on campus. Mysterious, no one really knows anything about him. Salem and Caz had some chemistry sure, but I definitely didn’t get the rivals to lovers vibe out of them. At all. The romance was an extreme slow burn. Add that to the pacing of the story and the overall feel was slow and drawn out. I kept waiting for the secret society factor to be revealed but it doesn’t really come to the forefront until the last 30% of the novel.

I wasn’t a big fan of the ending either although I do think it’s possible that it could be open-ended. There is potential to be able to write a sequel if the author wanted to.

Overall, a mediocre read that really didn’t do what I felt like it promised to do.

I absolutely loved every major and minor trope in this book. A college romance plus forbidden plus mystery? I was hooked. Salem was such an interesting character with a lot of baggage. There were so many things happening in her life, and she was just a deeply complex character—her childhood, her family dynamics, and all the relationships in her life weren’t the norm, which made everything so intriguing. And Caz—he was such an enigma. Honestly, both of them were, which is exactly what made their dynamic so compelling.

The mystery kept me engaged the entire time, and the epilogue? I love when an author gives us that “10 years later” glimpse into the characters’ lives—I will always eat that up. It was a bit of a slow burn, which I loved. And the little tropes sprinkled throughout? Chef’s kiss. Him being her TA? The forbidden tension? Perfection. Salem and Caz had incredible chemistry, but what I loved most was how they healed each other. The growth Salem went through was phenomenal—I was honestly shocked at how much Caz brought out the best in her. He made her feel comfortable, helped her break down her walls, and reminded her that life could be more. She had become so closed off, thinking that’s just how things were always going to be, and then she met someone who genuinely wanted to see her shine. That was beautiful.

This book was just such a vibe, and I had the best time reading it!

Loved this book so much! My criminological & psychological mind was going off and enjoyed reading a plot that combined the details of this with romance, loss, loneliness! Seeing myself relate to aspects of the plot through Salem made me really connect with her. Reading how Salem grew throughout the book and finding her person through Caz was so cute & kept me coming back for more. I will definitely recommend this book to everyone!!

This story premise was interesting but I felt there weren’t many characters that really kept me invested in the overall story. I did feel like it was a bit predictable but overall a book I think many will like. I Will note that there were several sections in the story where I had to reread sentences because the wording really didn’t make sense and I do hope that gets caught in further editing.

3.5 ⭐️ The first part of this book was beautifully written and I really liked the FMC and the tension between her and the MMC. By parts II and III I didn't feel like she was the same character and not because she was growing and changing. There were aspects of her tenacity that disappeared. The MMC is a morally grey artist who is so dark and twisty that it redeems the predictable plot. The further I read, the more I started lowering my rating. There is a huge plot hole in this book that I can’t believe, and it left me with no closure. Ultimately, this is an OK new adult dark romance read. The spice was low, and they faded to black a few times.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Gothikana, I was all kinds of excited to get my hands on Enigma. I know that they are separate in that they are standalones and do not take place in the same school, but the dark academia/gothic feel is. And while I would have liked a little more closure to a couple things, I had a great time reading this book.

Now, the majority of my enjoyment of this book was being in Salem’s head and watching as she, for lack of a better way to put it, comes out of her shell…but also doesn’t. Caz is mysterious, obsessive and protective as all get out. The journey to their HEA gave me whiplash, but it was interesting to watch as they are both drawn to each other but for various reasons should stay away and yet can’t. The stalker vibe is strong, as is the chemistry between them and it was fun to watch them open up to each other and find that they were exactly what they never knew they needed.

The vibe of the story is dark and grey and eerie and there are triggers peppered throughout the story in a lot of ways, so reader beware. As for the plot/mystery (mysteries) I liked how everything unfolded. I did guess at a couple of things, but there were enough surprises to keep things interesting and though the answers to the various questions were answered and were satisfying for me, I do wish there was more about what happened in the aftermath, but that’s a me thing. And as I do love me some great supporting characters, I gotta say I loved Aditi and Melissa and even Baron. So if you enjoyed Gothikana, you’ll enjoy this baby as well.

I went into this book blind, and I'm glad I did. What a great dark academia romance! I loved Gothikana for the dark academia vibe and this book reminded me why. The story with Salena and Caz and how their relationship develops is very well written. Anyone who enjoys an enemies to lovers, secrets and big reveals kind of read, this one is for you!

No one writes a mysterious, beautiful, obsessive man like RuNyx. I loved Caz so much, from the literal moment he opened his mouth. The way his entire world shifted to revolve around Salem was so swoon worthy, he may be my favorite RuNyx MMC so far.

I loved this so much, Caz and Salems relationship was perfection. I’ve never related so much to an FMC as I did Salem. The way she experiences the world and social interactions really resonated with me, and I was really able to empathize with her insecurities and self doubt. As a neurodivergent person who often times feels “other” and misunderstood, especially in romantic relationships, I was grateful for how authentically Salem was written. I love how Caz never tried to change her, but took the time to understand her instead. He saw the things she viewed as insecurities as her strengths instead, and from the start was her number one fan. I typically do not like the insta-love trope, but for Caz and Salem it just worked perfectly.

Overall, this was a great mix of romance, mystery, and suspense. I do wish there was a bit more time spent with the conclusion and gotten a bit more closure. It ended a bit abruptly, and I just found myself wanting to know more about what happened to the antagonists after the climax. I would have loved some more time spent with the “bad guys” at the end and to have seen Salem use her mind and forensics expertise to help rescue herself and Melissa/take down the secret society rather than be completely rescued by Caz.

Despite the rushed ending, I still thoroughly enjoyed Enigma, and will definitely be recommending it to so many people. I can always count on RuNyx to deliver an engaging and steamy story, and I hope maybe we will get to revisit this world or some of the side characters with a spinoff or 2.

runyx is back, baby! I feel so honored for being chosen to read this book. as someone who lost their mom as well — almost 3 years ago — my heart hurts for runyx.

but she came back swinging! I loved this book so much. Caz & salem were absolutely perfection. I loved the push and pull of their relationship, their deep love and trust for each other. I love that salem and her mom mended their relationship and that caz received a mother figure in return.
