I enjoyed reading Quilling Round the Year by Rachel Warrillow. You will fall in love with all the projects. I received an ARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given freely. Happy Reading!

While I only have access to a digital file, I have to imagine that the physical book is absolutely gorgeous. The photographs are crips, the colors pop, and the layout flows well, with clear instructions and enough photographs to follow along with little confusion. I am, however, somewhat confused as to who the target audience for this book is.
The introduction and the sections on tools, materials, and basic shapes and techniques, give the impression that this is an introduction to quilling for people who have never tried it before; at the same time, if the list of tools is an indication, the expectation is that those same people will invest in an array of special tools and paper of specific good quality from the start, before they have found out whether they enjoy the physical act of quilling, and the precision and patience necessary to produce the beautiful designs photographed in the book.
I have the same issue with the jump from basic techniques to relatively intricate designs; it's true that those designs aren't overly complex if you are well familiar with basic quilling shapes, but the book jumps from the most basic explanations of the mechanics of each of them, to a full design, without even a cursory, "practice until your are comfortable with the slotted tool, the spring of the coils, and the homogeneity of your shapes"--which, in reality, is the only way to obtain the lovely results shown in both the instructions and the "inspirational gallery" at the end of the book.
So while it is a beautiful book, and some of the designs within are lovely and tempting, I wonder how many people with some curiosity about paper filigree will spend money on the book, and all the supplies it lists, only to abandon the craft after a brief and frustrating attempt at becoming a master of the art after one short session with paper and slotted tool.
Quilling Round the Year works well as a coffee table book, what with its gorgeous photography, but it fails as a beginner friendly instructional text; on balance, I give it a 7.00 out of 10.

Quilling Round The Year is a colorful and beautiful tutorial guide with projects written and developed by Rachel Warrillow. Due out 29th April 2025 from Bloomsbury on their Herbert Press imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
The projects are attractive and accessible for a range of skills. Really all of them are do-able for beginners with some patience. They're arranged seasonally (spring, summer, autumn, winter) and all are colourful and appealing. The author has written a very good primer covering tools, supplies, paper choice, forms used in quilling, and more.
Each project includes step-by-step instructions accompanied by many clear colour tutorial photos. The instructions are easy to understand and follow. The author/publisher have included full sized templates as well as an abbreviated sources and links list (slanted toward readers in the UK, but a simple internet search will help readers who live elsewhere) and a gorgeous inspiration gallery (also in colour).
Quilling is admittedly a niche craft, but it's lovely to see it getting a boost. This would be an excellent choice for public, school or home library acquisition as well as for collective artists' studios and makers spaces.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Quilling Round the Year provides ideas and instructions for a variety of paper quilling projects, divided into four sections themed to the seasons of the year. Warrillow's friendly and encouraging tone throughout the book invites readers to see quilling as a means of both relaxation and creative expression. She provides multiple project ideas for each season, ranging from nature-based and elegant subjects to fun object-based ones, such as ice skates and an ice cream sundae.
Though very impressed by quilling projects I have seen, I have never practiced the art myself. My assumption as a viewer of the craft was that these projects in general require a very high skill level, and while attention to detail is important, after reading this book I came away with the sense that even beginner and intermediate crafters can try their hand at quilling and experience some success.
In addition to the project instructions, which include patterns to work from and ample accompanying photos, Warrillow dedicates short sections to quilling tools and techniques. These sections aren't TOO bare boned, necessarily, but I would not rely on them as one's sole instruction in quilling. I think this book would be perfect for someone who has a little bit of exposure to quilling, or some other resources for more of the basic skills, as this would be an excellent launching point for further projects. I did find myself thinking that I "troubleshooting" or "common problems" section would be helpful as well.
Overall I welcome this fun and vibrant addition to the world of quilling; this would be a good addition for collections heavily utilized by crafters, or could even provide some ideas for crafting programming (especially in conjunction with other related materials.)

Wow wow wow! The designs in this book are so amazing. I wish my poor ADHD addled brain had the capacity to manage a hobby that required such intricate handiwork so that I could create something like the mushroom or even better yet the four seasons mandala featured in this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloomsbury USA | Herbert Press for the review copy.

Beautiful book! The step by step instructions were easy to understand and the images were great! I really loved the theme behind this book regarding the seasons. Once I read the book through I created the butterfly! Great book! Thank you!!

I like the art Quilting. It’s not something I’ve ever tried, but this book makes me think that I could be successful. Some of my favorite designs include the snowflake the flowers, particularly the poinsettia and the sunflower and I’m really intrigued about the letters. This is something I may have to try and if it makes me feel this way, it’ll make others feel that way too.

Growing up, we had a quilled ornament that was my favorite. I looked forward to pulling it out of storage and hanging it on the Christmas tree for the month. In the past year, I came across a small quilling kit at my local craft store and became interested in the craft. I was so glad to be able to review an advanced reader copy of Quilling Round the Year to see how I could incorporate more of this craft. The projects in the book are colorful and creative. I was inspired by them, wanting to create my own projects, but also to learn and grow through some of the projects in the book. The hedgehog especially was very appealing to me. As a newbie to the craft, I think the introduction materials at the beginning of the book were very useful. Overall a great book for someone looking for a new hobby or a great resource for someone already interested in quilling.

This was a great intro into the art of quilling! The instructions are easy to follow and the images are perfectly clear, making it really easy to follow along. I also appreciated that the book included patterns to make the projects as replicating the design is often the most stressful part of the project for me.

I received a copy of this eBook from netGalley for a honest review.
This is one of the best quilling books I've come across. The step-by-step pictures help you understand the layering process of quilling and the templates are beautiful in themselves. They only thing I would like is a better idea of how big the finished project is.

Beautiful book on quilling, an underrated and often overlooked art form. This book includes attractive pieces for the reader to create with detailed instructions. My favorite is the rainbow. I haven’t quilled in ages but now I want to get out my supplies and give it another go!

I received this DRC from NetGalley.
I wasn't sure what to expect, since I've never tried quilling before. It was a nice surprise to see some beginner projects that actually looked nice and not just overly simple/lame. It's also a very approachable art, only needing a few things to get started. This has clear photography and instructions on how to do some different techniques. And it looks like even for more complicated compositions, it's more time consuming than it is difficult to learn.

I've had an interest in quilling for a while. This book is a decent start for beginners. It goes over the tools you need and how to use them, the main shapes you'll use, and then goes into projects. The tone of the book is conversational, like a friend sitting down to teach you. There are a lot of very clear pictures, and every project has a template at the back. The section at the end showing more advanced projects by members of the Quilling Guild and the Quirky Quillers Collective was a lovely inspiration for what can be possible with some patience and practice. The addition of a few suppliers and guilds is nice, though may become outdated as stores and guilds open and close. The theme of going through the year was kind of fun, with projects that follow the season. The "Four Seasons Mandala" didn't quite have as much colour to denote all four seasons and felt more like two seasons to me, but it's still beautiful and colours can be altered when made yourself. All told, if you're thinking about getting into Quilling, definitely check this book out. I read this digital book on NetGalley.

Many of us took up quilling a number of years ago. We made a few pieces and stopped. In fact, someone gave me a quilling enhanced, framed, invitation to my wedding. It still hangs in my hallway. So I was intrigued to see this book.
There are such fun projects in this book! Pumpkin, dragon fly, penguins, rainbows, snowflakes, ice cream sundaes... I was so inspired by this book, I ordered quilling paper and a took kit to start quilling again. Some of the projects are easy. The one that I really aspire to is the all-season mandala.
I'm very excited to get started quilling again for gift cards, ornaments, and whatever.

As a beginner, this book has some awesome steps to advance my skills. It is also great for anyone that is just learning to do quilling. It is quite a rewarding hobby!
There are instructions that are very clear, with photos to help the crafter learn this awesome skill. At the end of the book, there are templates that will help guide you when you are making your quilling projects. I find that to be super helpful so we can keep on track with what we are doing. The visuals in the book is definitely something to utilize. Overall, an excellent book with the how-tos and the supplies necessary for the projects.
