Historical fiction is, at least in my library, a hard sell to young adults. It has to have a perfect hook and draw them in as fast as possible. With a well-developed magic system, The Red Magician by Lisa Goldstein is just that kind of book. It deals with a horrible subject, the Holocaust, and one red-haired magician's attempt to warn a village of the coming atrocities. It would be nice to believe everyone is magically saved, but we know that wasn't the case and Ms. Goldstein doesn't rewrite history. It is just a good book and young readers will like it. A lot!

I wasn't able to download and read this book due to a bad flare up of lyme disease. I apologize to Netgalley and the publisher and author.

Similar to my experience with another of Goldstein's books, I had a difficult time connecting well with the characters in this story who felt not quite entirely cohesive. Overall the premise was very interesting, and the story was good enough--thus, 3-stars which is my "it's okay' rating.

If you already love Goldstein's work, this seems (in my sample of 2) to be on par with her other work and likely will be greatly enjoyed!

I wasn't able to connect with this title at the time--hope to pick it up again in the future.
