Thank you so much @penguinrandomca for the gifted digital copy for an honest review.

This book is perfect for Fall ! It got all the vibes you need. It's perfect for Dark Academia Fans ! The world building in this book was incredible.

I was pulled into this world at the edge of the afterlife where students learn magic and how to reap souls. In Blackwood Academy, You need to become the best if you wanna have a chance to keep your past memories and become something greater.

The rivalry between all those characters was really well written. They all need to win. Usually I'm not a big fan when there is a lot of point of views but in this book, it definitely adds to the story in a whole another level. Each characters is so driven and different.
The romance between some was so good.

My favorite character was Emilio. Obsessed with him and can't wait to see what will happen in book two because obviously this finished on an epic cliffhanger where every character chose a different path.

Read this if you love :

✨ Dark Academia ;
✨ Fantasy ;
✨ Forbidden Romance ;
✨ Multiple POVs ;
✨ Enemies to Lovers ;
✨ Touch her or him and 💀 ;
✨ Rivals.

5 stars! I had the best time reading this. I wasn’t sold at first because there are 6 POVs and I wasn’t entirely invested in everyone’s story but that quickly changed. I grew to love every single one of the characters and loved how different they all were. August and Wren and Irene ended up being my fav but I still love them all.
This is such an interesting and different story. It’s set in a magical academy in the afterlife. Definitely different than your typical magical academy.

If you like:
•Dark academia
•Rivals to lovers
•Trials
•Found family
•Multiple povs

Then I would highly recommend this book 🖤
Thank you NetGalley and Delacorte press for the e arc!

Immortal Consequences has been living in my head rent-free for weeks. I absolutely loved this book so much, even the psychological and emotional damage it gave me was so worth it. I've been following the author and this book since it was announced a couple of years ago, and I am so excited to have it physically in my hands so that I can cry even harder.

3.5/5

This book had a unique idea, and I was excited to read it. But overall, it just felt flat. The world wasn’t fully explained, and many of the big moments didn’t have much emotion or impact. It was hard to get into the story.

I did like the characters, and the way the chapters switched between their points of view was done well. It was never confusing, and each character had their voice. But even with that, nothing truly grabbed me. The twists and betrayals didn’t feel surprising or dramatic.

The book wasn’t bad, it was just okay. It had a lot of potential, but it didn’t quite deliver on the dark academia front.

Thank you, Delacorte Press, for the EARC in exchange for my honest review.

Multi pov that flows nicely and makes sense with the story. I don’t usually follow multi pov well, but I loved how each pov was a well developed character with their own personality.
Cut throat competition
Banter and tension
Gothic feels that remind me of Wednesday or Casper
The writing is incredible. Descriptive, interesting, and unputdownable
Audio is also fantastic!

Immortal Consequences drew me in on the premise of an academic purgatory likened to The Atlas Six. I was immediately very interested in Wren and August, and was very excited by having six POVs! I loved the relationships between all of these characters and their “unfortunate acquaintance.”

I had a hard time with the world mechanics of the afterlife. The suspension of disbelief for teens dying and then purgatory being a boarding school was definitely suspending. Like I get purgatory isn’t supposed to be cushy, but this sounds more like a teen’s idea of hell. But, I do love a dark academia book, and I think the magic school was fun. I had a lot of questions about the other aspects of this world’s afterlife, but it seemed as if the answer was there are different afterlives depending on the person who died, which is a common idea in a lot of mythologies, so I didn’t think too hard about it. My biggest question is how Blackwood didn’t eventually become overrun by the souls who decided to become Ascended?

Once the plot started plotting more, I felt the story was losing its grip on me. I think there were too many things trying to be done when what I really wanted was something straightforward that continued to showcase the relationships between the cast. I love a magical competition and I love hidden motives and secrets and betrayal, but it was a lot going on with too little built in certain areas. For instance, Louise was not a character, she was a tool and an archetype, and that was really disappointing.

While I do sound kind of harsh, I think this book was really well-written technically, it just needed help with execution. I think this is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. I do recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark academia and romantic yearning between multiple POVs.

The book was is an unique story about an academy for teens in purgatory where everyone is already dead. I liked the plot twists. The characters in this book were interesting and I liked reading about the struggles they have to endure. There is definitely a bit of mystery to the story as well. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Now THIS is a book! Any synopsis of this novel doesn’t do it justice. This is so much more than a book about a competition - that element just adds to what is an amazing story. I thoroughly enjoyed the concept of these characters in a purgatory, and thought that the author did a great job developing this entity. The plot was continually interesting, kept me wondering what was going to happen and wanting to read more. The characters were well-developed and I adored their relationships with one another. This is the first in a series (or perhaps a duology?) and I cannot wait to see what happens next after a cliff hanger ending. If you enjoy a unique fantasy world that combines together friendships, romance and survival…then you need to read this one. I can see a wide audience of YA fantasy readers liking this one. I highly recommend it!

4.5 stars.
I never wanted this book to end.
I am a sucker for a multi POV and when you add to that a dark academia setting and a deadly competition, I just knew Immortal Consequences would deliver.
If you look up yearning in the dictionary, you’ll see “Immortal Consequences”written as THE example because wow is there a heavy dose going on here.
The beginning 20% was a little slow to get into the main storyline but when things really started going down, I was grateful for the time spent focused on getting to know the characters because everything hit so much harder!
I cannot wait to read how this story develops and I need book 2 already!
I encourage everyone to pick up this book and I am so grateful I got to read this ARC.

I devoured Immortal Consequences like it was oxygen. Between the hauntingly atmospheric world of Blackwood Academy and a cast of morally complex, emotionally charged characters, this book gave me everything I crave in upper YA fantasy - dark academia, ghostly trials, enemies-to-lovers tension, and soul-deep stakes.

Set in a magical boarding school for souls caught in the afterlife, the story follows six unforgettable students thrown into a deadly Decennial competition. The world-building is vivid and imaginative, the plot fast-paced and layered with secrets, and the character dynamics are electric. I was especially obsessed with Wren and August’s sizzling push-pull relationship, and completely melted over the softer love story between Oliver and Emilio. Every POV felt distinct and emotionally rich, no easy feat with such a large cast.

If you're into the vibe of The Atlas Six but want something more emotionally grounded and easier to follow, this is it. Paranormal tension, razor-sharp banter, and high-stakes trials blend seamlessly into a story that grips you and refuses to let go.

The cliffhanger left me breathless. This isn’t just a read, it’s a full-body experience. Dark, magical, and utterly addictive. I need the sequel yesterday.

Big thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for the chance to review this book pre-release. This one exceeded my expectations, I honestly went in quite blind (because LOOK at that cover!!!) and I'm genuinely happy I did because it was that much more fun. A couple of the world-building details were confusing at first, but I could overlook them and still genuinely enjoy the story.

4.5 but rounded up

Loved the basis of the story! Dark Academia set in the afterlife where they are taught to shepherd souls. They also learn magic and hope to one day become an ascended where they will gain access to their full power. But in order to become an ascended, they must first win in a challenge.
The challenge has changed though to become a deadly competition (how can it be deadly when they are already dead? Just read!) where the students face monsters and dark magic that shouldn't exist.
Things don't seem right at Blackwood Academy. The Demien Order is trying to infiltrate. The Ether is becoming unsatisfied, and there is a dark secret within the school... multiple secrets actually. Discovering them was the best part!

6 POVs sounds like a lot, but it worked for the story. It was easy to keep them apart because they all had their unique personality, not to mention they were perfectly paired off.

The main two have their own rivalry going, but I kept thinking to myself "if he teases you that just means he likes you". It was intense "teasing", from both ends.

I thought it was well written and I was only a little saddened by the end, and a bit confused. Actually, the reason it isn't an actual 5 from me is because the ending just didn't vibe with me. There wasn't anything crazy besides knowing it was the last trial. It was the same amount of craziness that happened through the rest of the book so when secrets were being revealed, I wasn't in awe. Just sad about one character in particular.

But this is still a story that is worth your time if you like deadly trials, rivals to lovers, events that aren't sitting well in your head, secrets, more secrets, and "what the heck"moments.

Received an arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I love the concept: dark academia, competition, secret society, the afterlife. What really hurts the book is the multiple POVs. There are 6 povs and each chapter changes POV so it was distracting in the beginning. So there was a lot going on in each POV but the book isn't long enough to flesh it out. I feel like if you cut 1-2 POVs, the book would still be fine and you wouldn't get spoon fed for every detail. There are 2 romances and 1 friendship storyline so I felt everything was told to you instead of showing.

Spoilers Below:

Wren/August; academic rivals to lovers. it was obviously chapter 1 that they were already in love with each other so it was boring. everybody was like "oh you two need to finally together" so I didn't care when they finally got together or that ending.

Oliver/Emilio: Friends to lovers. I wanted more. this was my favorite so I need more romantic scenes. again, everyone was like "you two are obvious"

overall, I do like the pairings but I need more romance but the changing POVs was not helpful. I think it would make sense for the two couples, we get a POV from 1 side. the downside is that the author tells us they are in love by talking about previous moments but I wanted her to show more romantic moments in the present. There are romantic scenes but I need way more moments. It is YA so there is a closed door scene. The characters are 17-18 but they have been dead for decades or centuries.

It is the first book so it is setting up the world building and the overall plot so I felt the book was alright. I think 6 POVs is too much for book 1. We didn't spend enough time with each character.

I suppose that the concept of this dark academia setting was compelling enough that I wanted to read the book even if the setting of purgatory felt like it could be too deeply sad to be enjoyable. Ultimately I could never get over the fact that these were dead children, no matter the magic. Just children. I didn't understand enough about the world and the magic in it to want to keep reading. The cover is beautiful and I've read enough other reviews to be happy to stock it in my shop and just chalk it up to not being the right fit for me.

I honestly could not get through this book, I got to about 40% and was completely bored. While I found the concept of the underworld/after death life limbo interesting, it seems like it took forever to get to certain points in the story and it just did not sit well with me so I stopped reading. The book was not difficult to understand, I just felt that it was not for me. I do encourage anyone interested in YA to read.

ARC provided by Toppling Stacks Tours and Delacorte Press. All thoughts are my own.

Immortal Consequences is everything I want out of YA dark academia. We have a complex story full of tension and moral ambiguity, a mysterious and atmospheric school setting, and a cast of characters who are deeply flawed, relatable, and often at odds with each other in deliciously dramatic ways. Blackwood Academy lives and breathes as its own eerie character, setting the stage for a story full of competition, desperation, and consequence.

With six POV characters, there is naturally a lot of narrative ground to cover, and while it did make it harder to connect deeply with every individual, each voice was distinct and layered. Some I immediately found compelling, others grew on me, but all were interesting in their own right. I was especially intrigued by the way interpersonal dynamics shifted as the Decennial progressed. Betrayals and shifting alliances felt inevitable but still managed to land emotionally.

The pacing in this book is brisk. Once the Decennial begins, there is barely time to breathe, and that urgency really worked to keep the tension high. While I guessed a few of the major plot beats, there were also some sharp left turns that surprised me in the best way. The stakes never felt hollow, and that suspense carried straight through to the final page.

The worldbuilding is another standout element, if a bit familiar at times. Readers who enjoy stories with purgatory or afterlife-adjacent settings will see echoes of other series, but Immortal Consequences distinguishes itself with its tone and character-driven stakes. The magic system was compelling, though I did find myself wanting deeper exploration into how it worked and the full range of its implications. With this being the first in a series, I have high hopes that future installments will expand on this foundation.

Ultimately, this was a gripping and satisfying read that delivers on atmosphere, intrigue, and high emotional stakes. I’m definitely looking forward to what comes next for these characters and this haunting world.

A boarding school in purgatory, a magical competition among students, and plenty of emotional moments that grasp at your heartstrings? Say less.

Readers are immediately drawn in to this atmospheric, gothic, and eerie world that centers around Blackwood Academy and its cutthroat magic competition called the Decennial, where the winner gets to move on from purgatory while the losers face the most dire circumstance of all — loss of everything — memories of life, memories of family/friends, basically a total erasure of who they are/were as a person.

Told through the povs of six main students, this book drops readers right into talk of this magical competition, so the feeling that it’s a BIG DEAL is felt almost from the first page. Our 6 main students from friendships, albeit tenuous ones, alliances, enemies, romantic entanglements, and it’s interesting to see how those relationships affect the students’ competitive natures.

While all of the above was fun and kept me glued to the pages, the one aspect I wasn’t expecting was a story that drips with emotion. My favorite part by the end was the heartache I felt for each character, particularly the ones that catch glimpses and snippets of their lives while they were living. While some of them have come to terms with being dead, others haven’t and the amount of pain that the memories and flashbacks bring was a gut punch every time.

All told, I really enjoyed this one. The premise is unique, the eerie academy setting is a perfect backdrop for the dead, and the emotional payoff was off the charts. I absolutely recommend this one and will be patiently waiting for book 2.

Y’ALL I absolutely DEVOURED this book!!!! Immortal Consequences releases in just a couple of days, and the plot is like Goblet of Fire and Stranger Things had a dark academia, underworldly baby. The vibesssssss EEEK ok ok let’s get into it!

🌟🌟🌟✨/5

I couldn’t stop reading this book!! it hooked me just like the YA urban fantasies/paranormal romances of long ago, and I couldn’t get enough of the atmosphere and the vibes. Truly, the setting and world-building was unlike anything I’ve read before!

I also enjoyed this being sort of an Atlas Six sort of thing, involving a larger set of main characters with their own relational dynamics set within a dark academia world. All I wanted was to get closer to the characters and to find out everything about them!

Upon reflection, it wasn’t flawless (though what classic YA paranormal story was???) - there were elements of the plot and character development where I just wanted MORE. On several occasions, I felt like I was just reading Goblet of Fire, though the unique world made up for it. One of the two primary romance subplots was SO compelling, while the other (while delicious in the moment) only acted as a substitute for the individual characters’ development. And I didn’t feel as though all of the characters remained consistent throughout perspectives and as far as actions matching what I was told about the character (I’m looking at you, Wren!!!)

As I said, this was an addictive, fast-paced read that was SOO fun, and I canNOT wait for the sequel! While I finished it wishing for more meat in the bones, this book offered plenty for me to end up delighted I got to read it early! If you’re a fan of dark academia, larger casts of characters, academic rivalries, and underworldly secrets, this one should be on your radar!

This is a YA dark academia set in a transitory school in purgatory! There’s magic, forbidden alliances, a lingering darkness threatening to destroy the afterlife. About every 10 years, a new student is dropped into this purgatory school. They then must transition and train to learn how to transition other souls. This is their destiny until they eventually forget who they are and are released into the nether. There are trials called the “Decintinnial” where students are chosen to compete for a chance to be the ascended and not have to spend the rest of their eternity transitioning over other souls. But there is something disturbing that may hinder the balance. Six students are exposed to a darkness and must work together to solve the mystery and save purgatory.
Review: This one definitely has the LGBTQ+ representation. There are several romantic interest sidelines within the story. I felt like some of the romantic side plots could have been eliminated just for a better flow of the main plot. The characters were great and flawed and fabulous. I really enjoyed connecting with their heartache and challenges. I’ll be sticking around for the next book to see where the afterlife takes these young adults.
Many thanks to NetGalley and publisher for this ARC read in exchange for my honest review!
