Like Mark Edwards, Kerry Wilkinson writes intriguing murder mysteries where ordinary people are put in extraordinary situations. In ‘My Son’s Girlfriend’, Jennifer returns to her old university town in search of her missing son who is accused of murdering his girlfriend. From flashbacks to her own university days, we learn that there are definite parallels between the current case and a murder Jennifer witnessed 24 years ago. I enjoyed reading this fascinating novel and was particularly impressed with the twist at the very end. However I did find Jennifer’s search for the truth a little protracted and meandering.

Story is told from the POV of Jennifer Farley - Present day and Twenty-four years ago.

Start starts when Jennifer’s son Daniel calls her and states – I didn’t do it!
Daniel is away at Ashington attending the University and never calls. He communicates via a text. She tries to call him back with no luck and then sends a text. Soon the police are at her front door. They inquire if she knows her son’s whereabouts. She said at school and hasn’t been home since September. They tell her they are making the visit on behalf of their colleagues as he isn’t in Ashington - “he is wanted to questioning as your son’s girlfriend is dead. “
Jennifer cannot believe Ella is dead. Then she remembers Daniel’s phone message.

Jennifer and her husband Andrew met twenty-four years ago in Ashington. Jennifer’s experience there wasn’t the best. Things started one afternoon at the university café when she and best friends Hayley and Natasha watched Jo a classmate being harassed by her boyfriend Craig. Jennifer stood up to Craig and took Jo’s side. Craig didn’t forget this and seem to be out to get Jennifer. A few weeks later her roommate is murdered. Jennifer never recovered from this and vowed never to go back.

However, now that Daniel is hiding and Ella’s death was caused in the same manner as the murder of her roommate and best friend Hayley’s, Jennifer knows she has to return to Ashington to uncover the truth.

Hmmm are the two murders linked? What are Jennifer’s secrets and are they putting Daniel in danger.

Wow! This got so involved. I felt I needed to draw a venn-diagram as to who was connected to whom!

I was way off on whodunit.

I am a big psychological thriller fan and this is my seventh [author: Kerry Wilkinson|3508219] novel – " Party at No. 12" was my first – which was great- and it is at the top of my favorites
A comment I made in my reviews after my first story was ~ I have a new fav author and am now looking forward to another of his stories!

When Jennifer receives a call from her son Dan all he says is it wasn’t me and hangs up the phone. As the police turn up on her doorstep she finds out that he is wanted for the murder of his girlfriend. She knows he is innocent but now he is missing and she needs to find him before the police do. As she travels to a place she promised never to return to she discovers things are even darker than she believed and faces from her past keep turning up in strange places. Is the truth closer to home and what exactly has Dan got himself into and could Jennifer be putting herself in danger trying to find out the truth.
This is an edge of your seat read with a great ending and I loved the mix of the current timeline and Jennifer’s back story in that town and was blown away by the ending.

Wow. What a book, throughout the whole book I couldn’t predict anything I thought so many times I’d figured it out but I hadn’t.

I would have liked more about what the dad was doing throughout this whole ordeal but really I don’t know how it would have fit into the story to do that and it did make me sad that one of the characters felt unlovabled because they were adopted.

Overall a great book with so many great twists and the ultimate plot twist at the end. Highly recommend. I can see this being an itv drama

This was alright. I did find myself getting absorbed in the book at certain points. I thought some of the things that happened just either didn't add up or just felt really very far-fetched. However, I enjoyed the writing style and the idea behind the story was good. I just thought that it wandered a bit and was hard to believe at times.
All that said, this was still a book that I read and don't regret doing so. This was about a woman whose son calls one night and says that he didn't do it. That's it. That's the whole call. Of course, she doesn't have a clue what is going on but shortly after the police show up at her door. Something has happened and it's quite similar to something that happened before. However. this time her son is involved, and she will do anything to protect her son.
I'm glad I read this but it's not a favorite. I'd definitely try more from this author though.

*4.5 stars*

It’s nearly midnight when Jennifer gets a phone call, and sees that it’s her son Daniel calling. Daniel is away at University, and never calls so late, which immediately makes her nervous. She eagerly answers “ Is that you darling “? After a beat Daniel replies “ It wasn’t me” and hangs up. Jennifer is frantic and keeps calling him but he doesn’t reply. What on earth did he mean?

Jennifer doesn’t have to wait long for an answer, as the police arrive at her door 30 minutes later and explain that Daniel’s girlfriend Ella has been found dead and Daniel has gone missing.

From there on in, Jennifer is determined to find her son because she knows without question that Daniel isn’t capable of hurting anyone. So she takes it upon herself to travel back to a place where something terrible happened when she herself was a student at the very same University some 24 years ago.

Phew, My giddy aunt!, in her quest to find Daniel’s whereabouts, and prove his innocence, Jennifer gets herself mixed up with some extremely dangerous people, but it makes for a terrific read. Fast paced, well written, and completely gripping, (fingernails bitten to the quick), it comes highly recommended!

Kerry Wilkinson’s “My Son’s Girlfriend” is a gripping psychological thriller with a mother desperately searching for her son while uncovering secrets from both her son and her own past.

Jennifer receives a phone call late at night from the police, her son, Dan, a university student, has vanished, and the police suspect him in the murder of his girlfriend, Ella. Jennifer cannot believe what she is hearing and feels she needs to find her son to hear is side of the story. Just thirty minutes before the police rang Jennifer received a strange phone call from Dan pleading his innocence.

Jennifer learns that Ella’s murder is a virtual copy of the death of her own best friend from twenty years ago. She feels the need to return the place she left behind to try and uncover the truth. The story twists and turns and the question of whether the two murders are linked keeps you guessing. It is also apparent that Jennifer herself has secrets that could put her son at risk.

The story alternates between present day and flashbacks to Jennifer’s teenage years. Throughout the novel the reader learns of secrets which adds to the suspense and intrigue.

Jennifer is determined to find her son but struggles with the memory of guilt and grief over her friend’s death. She feels sure her son wouldn’t kill his girlfriend but is it the case. The book is filled with strong characters from Jennifer’s past and each add depth to the story.

“My Son’s Girlfriend” is a very good thriller, lots of suspense with an intriguing plot making it a very enjoyable read.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.

Jennifer receives a phone call from her son. He says ‘it wasn’t me’ and hangs up. Daniel’s girlfriend Ella is dead and he is the only suspect. Now on he’s on the run. Jennifer travels to his university town to try and find her son, and the truth.

Really enjoyed this one. I found Jennifer’s search really frustrating, but I think that was the way the author wanted me to feel as she struggled to find Daniel. I loved that there were so many dead ends and it never felt like a conclusion would be reached. The ending seemed rushed - a decision to go the the police and then the next page the aftermath.one of the best bits of the book was the last chapter, the real twist in the tale!

Highly recommend.

Kerry Wilkinson is back on form with this gripping tale of a mother who is willing to go to any lengths to save her son from being falsely accused of murdering his girlfriend. The police seem very interested in Dan - perhaps too interested, as they are clearly seeing him as a suspect in Ella's death.

But now he has gone underground and it seems like the only one who can help him is Jennifer. And if that means that she must revisit one of the most traumatic events of her past in the process, then surely as a mother she really has no choice but to do so...

Cleverly plotted and evenly paced, this thriller is well worth a read!

I always enjoy this authors work. They are easy but supense filled reads with well drawn plots that give a touch of real life.

In stories like this one, where mothers and their children are concerned I often compare these to the feeling I would have when something similar would happen to me.

First of all this must me one of the worst nightmares when you receive a call like Jennifer does. Of course you instantly believe in your son's innocence, but not everybody feels the same way. So, a mum has got to do, what a mum has got to do, which is helping her child in need.

I would also jump in my car and go to the rescue, but I would be too afraid to do everything Jennifer does. But maybe when the going gets tough, the tough get going?

If I have to pick a favourite person, I would pick Ella's mum. She is such a gentle soul.

Sometimes, what you see, is what you get. Sometimes what you see and what you get are two totally different things...

Money is often the base for things going wrong and ending in disaster.

I utterly enjoyed this book and was startled by the outcome. Loved it though.  5 stars.

Thank you

Jen receives a call from her son saying he didn't do it. She takes off in her car to return to the college campus of her nightmares to try to find him. The police said he murdered his girlfriend. Jen doesn't believe it. She gets thrown in a trunk, finds hidden money, and more ties to her past than she expected. How is this all connected? I did not expect the bad people to be the bad people. Good book. but it did get a little long to me.

I’ve read all of Kerry Wilkinson’s other books and have enjoyed them all, however this is probably her best one yet. It’s the perfect domestic thriller as it is fast paced, engaging, well written, and comes with plenty of twists of turns. I’d definitely recommend this book.

When Jennifer’s son sends her a worrying text late one night out of the blue, she tries to call him back without success. The text is followed by a visit from the police asking for her son, in connection with the murder of his girlfriend.

What starts as a mother looking for her son is the start of a journey into the past and a huge chain of events leading to a thrilling conclusion.

As with this author’s previous books, the characters are lifelike and relatable, the narrative is pacy and page turning keeping the interest all the way to the end.

Highly recommended this for those that love a thriller.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

MY SON'S GIRLFRIEND BY KERRY WILKINSON.
Release date set for the 24th of February 2025.
My first book by Kerry was Home Is Where The Lies Live and this one is my second book and this one is another 5 star rating from me.
There's something very special about how this author writes.
The style, the story line and how everything comes together is just brilliant.
I will eventually get through all of his books and read all the others that are yet to be released.

Jennifer receives an ominous phone call from her son, Daniel, late at night. "It wasn't me," was all he said before the line went dead. Not long after, the police show up at Jennifer's house with some bad news. The details of the tragedy sound eerily familiar to Jennifer, and Daniel is now missing.

The storyline takes place during two different time periods, 24 years ago and the present. Twenty-four years ago, Jennifer was a college student in the same town where Daniel is currently attending college.

Jennifer will do whatever it takes to find her son and prove his innocence. There was an interesting cast of characters that she suspected, each looking guiltier than the other. Trying to figure out who the guilty party was may seem obvious to the reader, but are things ever really that obvious?

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion/review.
