The action and intensity begin with the first page as we see the serial killer set up his first victim. The similarities to a twenty-year-old murder spree are undeniable and leave law enforcement wondering if this is the same killer or a copycat.

Rookie FBI agent Skylar and her veteran agent partner, Harold, join local police detective Jake to investigate the murder. Harold was one of the investigators on the original unsolved murders. Jake was a child at the time but fascinated by the investigation. Now, they face a killer with the same MO. Harold and the now-retired sheriff he worked with before concentrate on following up on the old investigation's leads while Jake and Skylar investigate leads for the current murder.

The investigation intensifies when a second murder occurs. There are twists and turns leading to multiple suspects, some of whom have connections to the original murders. I stayed glued to the pages as Jake and Skylar worked through the information they collected. Matters became complicated when Skylar received taunts and threats from the killer, making her the next target. The intensity of the ending had me on the edge of my seat as the final confrontation played out.

I enjoyed watching Jake and Skylar's relationship develop. The sparks between them are immediate, but both are determined to keep things professional. I liked their teamwork during the investigation and how they avoided allowing their growing attraction to distract from it. I liked how Jake was tuned in to Skylar and could sense when something was wrong. I liked how he figured out her secret and reacted to it. I liked that while Jake respected Skylar's abilities, he was also very protective. I liked the ending and Jake's plan for the future.

This is a gripping romantic suspense that masterfully blends past trauma with present danger, delivering a twisty, emotionally satisfying story. Cassie Miles weaves a tightly plotted mystery with just the right amount of romance and intrigue.

At its core, the novel explores the long shadow of a tragic murder spree—the Lightkeeper killings—which continues to haunt Skylar, Jake, and a web of others two decades later. When a new murder mirrors those past crimes, old wounds resurface and a chilling copycat emerges, drawing everyone back to the scene of the original trauma.

The story jumps straight into the action, offering a compelling whodunit filled with red herrings and layered characters. Skylar and Jake’s relationship unfolds naturally amid the tension, culminating in a heartwarming conclusion full of hope, love, and new beginnings.

True to the Harlequin Intrigue style, this novel checks every box: suspense, emotional depth, satisfying romance, and a fast-paced plot that keeps the pages turning. A strong addition to the genre and a great pick for fans of second chances and tightly woven mysteries.

Twenty years of their lives shaped by tragedy and this story allowed Skylar and Jake and everyone else touched by the Lightkeeper murders to come full circle. Twenty years bringing a copycat killer also touched by original circle making the story come full circle. From family of the victim to cop or librarian or someone else to the person fighting back makes for an intriguing mystery. The story starts right off into that mystery with and murder that brings together all the players and allows them to exact justice. In doing so, we get more than a touch of romance. In fact, the end of the story is completely adorable and full of proposals or proclamations of love and a future.
This was a very well written story with a lot of red herrings and more murder to keep the reader turning pages. The story of past and present are tied together in a well plotted mystery tale. Like all good Harlequin Intrigues, this book checks all the boxes for romantic suspense fans.

When a reporter gets a tip to meet an informant who has information about the Lightkeeper's Curse, she thinks she's stumbled onto something that's going to change her life...little does she know it will.

When the reporter's body is found, FBI Agent Skylar Gambel is brought in to investigate. A local police detective, Jake Armstrong is also working the case, one he knew of 20 years ago when he was 10. Skylar and Jake work together to track down the murderer, not sure if it is the same person from the past or a new copycat. Their investigation puts Skylar in danger, can Jake find the criminal before it's too late?

I felt this was a solid mystery, set in a picturesque part of the country. I will look for other books by this author.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

Rookie FBI agent Skylar Gambel and police detective Jake Armstrong both had their lives shaped by the Lightkeeper Murders. Now, twenty years later, a new serial killer called the Shadowkeeper has emerged from foggy obscurity. Are the deaths the work of a new murderer, simply an evolved one…or a curse? Skylar is determined to crack the case, even as she fights her hidden phobias and her attraction to Jake. But when she is kidnapped along with the killer’s next victim, Jake vows to silence the violent slayer once and for all! Great read! This book had thrilling suspense, intriguing, murder, mystery, a great who done it and some wild twists and turns! The story was very interesting! I highly recommend reading this book! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
