I dove into spirituality & disability topics earlier this year, and this was one of the more compelling reads. I especially appreciated Yong’s grappling regarding what heaven will mean for his brother, who has Down syndrome. Some people think that redemption means his brother will be “healed,” but Yong pushes back, saying Down syndrome is such an integral part of who his brother is, that maybe it is the rest of us who will be healed of our inability to fully appreciate his brother just the way he is. Honestly that makes a lot of sense to me, and helps shift the paradigm even here on earth about who needs what. Yong also encourages us to reread Biblical texts that have been misinterpreted to marginalize people with disabilities. Such important messages here that all communities of faith would do well to take to heart; if we aren’t inclusive, what are we even?
