A kind of modern Count of Monte Cristo, The Revenant is a western based on the real life of Hugh Glass and tells of his search for vengeance after the men he is travelling leave him for dead after he is mauled by a bear. Full of beautiful writing, sweeping vistas, period detail and harrowing survival, The Revenant is the very definition of cinematic, a fact that led to it being snapped up almost before it was released and turned into the movie that finally got Leonardo DiCaprio his Oscar. Beyond that, though, it is a fantastic historical novel extremely well told.

Not my usual cup of tea, and I haven't seen the film, but I thought this was fairly good. My attention did wander at times though, in the backstory parts, and I thought there could have been a better ending.
