I did not know a lot about Hekate before reading this, but will be adding books about her to my list. This novel in verse begins with Hekate's birth and follows her story through adult goddess. You learn of her losses, hurts, and loves through verse that paints a beautiful picture of her life. It was interesting to see other Greek gods and goddesses in the story and see what part they play in shaping lives.

I really enjoyed the story and finished it in two sittings. I will be adding it to my high school library and would have loved to add it to the middle school library except for the language used at the very end of the story. (I am in a very conservative area.)

This was addictive and I finished it in two short settings. The story of Hekate told in prose was beautiful and heartbreaking, like any good Greek tragedy. I highly recommend, even if poetry isn’t typically for you!

Hekate (Deluxe Limited Edition) – The Witch by Nikita Gill is nothing short of spellbinding. From the moment you open the cover, you're swept into a world where myth, magic, and poetry intertwine in the most beautiful and haunting way.

Gill reimagines the goddess Hekate not just as a figure of ancient power, but as a deeply relatable symbol of feminine strength, transformation, and resilience. Every poem feels like an invocation—rich with emotion, wisdom, and empowerment.

The deluxe edition is truly a collector’s dream: stunning design, elegant finishes, and thoughtful details that elevate the reading experience into something sacred. Whether you're a longtime fan of Gill’s work or a newcomer drawn to the mystique of witchcraft and divine feminine energy, this edition is worth every page.

This isn’t the Hekate of dusty mythological footnotes, it's the story of a girl born into chaos, orphaned in war, and raised in the eerie beauty of the Underworld!

From the very first page, Gill paints Hekate as both vulnerable and fearsome: a child of loss, growing up among the dead, haunted by questions of identity and belonging. As she steps into her power witchcraft, necromancy, and a magic even the Olympians fear Hekate becomes a force of reckoning. But what struck me most wasn’t just her strength; it was her loneliness, her yearning for love, her need to choose her own path when gods and monsters alike tried to control her.

Reading this book is like stepping into an ancient myth told around a fire, only sharper, more feminist, and fiercely modern. And at the center of it all is Hekate, raw and radiant, a heroine who proves that survival itself can be a kind of magic.

✨If you love myth retellings that give voice to forgotten goddesses, Hekate: The Witch would be a good choice for you! It’s both an origin story and a battle cry, a reminder that power often comes from the places where we’ve been broken!

⚡️Thank you Toppling Stacks Tours, Nikita Gill and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for sharing this book with me!

Hekate by Nikita Gill is such a beautiful story. Told in verse, it’s a book you can savor. The prose is reminiscent of the Greek epics of old, and fits perfectly for a retelling of our favorite goddess, Hekate. We follow her journey through the underworld, her self-discovery and the embracing of her powers.

Nikita Gill really outdid herself, the writing is exquisite, and the story completely unforgettable. I can already feel myself wanting to pick it up for a re-read.

This was so good! I am a sucker for all Greek gods fictional stories, but this one was above and beyond, truly just exceptional and very well done! Usually we hear the stories from the viewpoint of the main Olympian gods or their demigods, but this one comes from a traumatized daughter of the Titans and it was everything I’d hoped it would be. This book was so beautifully written, with very poignant, inspirational and thought provoking phrases peppered throughout the entire book. I will absolutely be reading the rest of this series as it comes out. So enjoyable!

A special thanks to NetGalley, Little, Brown and Company, The Hatchet Book Group and the author for giving me this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you NetGalley, Nikita Gill, and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! The first thing I noticed about this one is how STUNNING the cover is. It’s absolutely gorgeous and would look great on any bookshelf!

I’ve read some books before by this author and really enjoyed them, so I was excited to pick this one up. I didn’t love this one quite as much as I’d hoped, but that’s an issue with me and the format because it truly is a beautiful book. For some reason the fact that it was written in verse made it hard for me to get fully invested, but I appreciate what Gill was doing and I think it was a good reimagining of Hekate’s story.

This one follows through Hekate’s life from being a young child, which I really appreciated as I haven’t read a book about her before. It’s unique and full of lyrical passages and interesting characters. I think people of any age (YA and up) would enjoy this one. If you like Greek mythology, stories about powerful women, or poetry, be sure to give this one a chance when it releases in September!

This was such a good telling of Hekate's story. Loved that it was written in verse; gave the vibe of epic poems written about heroes. Also gave the story a great pacing and world-building. Loved the other nods to other tales and gods. Great way to learn more or even just dip your toes into Hekate's story.

Greek mythology is one of my favorite genres, but for some reason I thought this would be adult, not YA. I'm not the biggest fan of books written in verse. It's hard to follow along and I prefer when writing is concise and to-the-point.

I found this book to be an enjoyable read. The story kept me engaged from start to finish and had some moments that really stood out. Overall, it offered an entertaining reading experience.

I’m always down for a good Greek mythology retelling and this one did not disappoint! Hekate has always been a favorite of mine and I feel that Nikita Gill captures her spirit so well. Having the novel written in prose is a nice touch as well and is reminiscent of other great Greek epics. I hope there are more goddess coming-of-age stories to come in Gill’s literary future.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Beautiful and evocative, but it doesn't quite know what it wants to be.

Hekate's story told in verse and adding to the pantheon of myth re-tellings giving voice to the lesser known stories of women! No one could have done this better than Nikita Gill and I am honored to have read it early. What a gift!

Such a great take on the Hekate mythology. It's very unique to be written in verse, truly making it feel original and like a Greek epic. Had a lot of fun learning more about Hekate's story, as not much focuses on her childhood years or relationships with other Greek mythological figures. I love this goddess of witchcraft and was not at all disappointed by her depiction! Made me enjoy her history even more. I think fans of witchcraft, lore, history, and poetry will really enjoy this one.

Fans of Greek mythology retellings will not be disappointed with this novel in verse. I knew very little of Hekate and loved how her story wove through lesser known and more famous Greek gods and goddesses. I initially was less interested in the underworld, but as the world building and adventures began, I found this hard to put down. I think this will be a hit with teens, and I highly recommend this for high schools and YA librarians.

Nikita Gill is my favorite poet and I was looking forward to picking this up ever since I first heard about it. Greek Mythology retellings are some of my favorite stories to read.

Hekate is a character that I enjoy quite a bit from mythology since she is the Goddess of Witches among many other things. I did not know much of her backstory before she becomes the formidable Goddess I have come to love in stories. Nikita uses her beautiful lines of verse and prose to tell Hekate’s story.

We see Hekate from a young girl and see her coming of age story in this book. It was interesting to read another book about a daughter of Titans from their own perspective, there aren’t many of them. Many Greek Myth stories focus on the Olympians. Hekate’s story includes many famous events we have come to know from Greek Mythology, such as: the Titanomachy (the war between the Titans and the Gods), among so many others. I enjoyed reading about these from Hekate’s perspective as she comes into her powers.

This is a wonderful book for fans of Greek Mythology, novels written in verse, and powerful female stories. There were so many quotes I highlighted in my eARC of this book. Nikita’s writing shines. I will definitely be adding Hekate to my collection when it comes out and look forward to the rest of the series.

Very lyrical young adult Greek mythology. I enjoyed this. It did take a minute for me to really get into the story but once I did I enjoyed it for sure. I am very picky with books written in verse. I liked that we got a retelling of a goddess that doesn't get talked about as much as some of the other well known Greek Gods and Godesses.

Hekate
By Nikita Gill @nikita_gill
Release date: September 16, 2025

Thank you to NetGalley, Nikita Gill and Little Brown Books for Young Readers for this incredible eARC!

I absolutely adored this book! A stunning, poetic retelling of Hekate’s story, it swept me into the depths of the Underworld and didn’t let go until the final page. If you loved "Circe" or any mythology-inspired stories, this one is a must-read.

Told in beautiful free verse, the novel reimagines the origin of Hekate—the goddess of witchcraft and necromancy—as a young girl abandoned by her mother in the Underworld for her own protection during the war between the old gods and the Olympians. What follows is a powerful journey of self-discovery, grief, strength, and transformation. As Hekate navigates the eerie, richly imagined realms of the Underworld—from the River Styx and the Lethe to Tartarus and the Elysian Fields—she begins to uncover her past, forge her identity, and embrace her own unique power.

The worldbuilding is gorgeous and immersive, with mythology woven in seamlessly. I especially loved how deeply human and layered the gods felt—Thanatos, Hermes, Charon, and even Hades are given surprising kindness and complexity. The Olympians’ darker sides are explored as well, reminding us of their flaws and fears. The writing is lyrical and evocative, with passages I wanted to underline again and again.

Hekate’s arc is beautifully done. What I found most compelling is that she was one of the only gods without a predestined course, a double-edged sword of uncertainty. Watching her grow from a girl questioning her worth into a woman claiming her power was incredibly moving. The way the book was structured—I found it completely captivating.

This is the kind of book that lingers with you, full of aching beauty, fierce heart, and hard-won empowerment. It felt like reading a myth rewritten by Hekate herself—bold, haunting, and unforgettable.

Highly, highly recommend for fans of mythology and lyrical prose!

Nikita Gill delivers yet another breathtaking triumph in this novel-in-verse that explores the myth and power of the goddess Hekate. Lyrical, raw, and soul-stirring, this collection blends mythology, witchcraft, and womanhood with a deeply personal and spiritual resonance. Gill’s words don’t just tell a story—they ignite something within.

This is more than a story; it’s a reclamation of divine feminine power through one of mythology’s most enigmatic figures. Hekate emerges not only as a goddess of chaos, protection, and the moon, but also as a guiding force for modern seekers. With themes of purpose, identity, and spiritual connection, this book is perfect for readers interested in mythology, feminist spirituality, and poetic storytelling that lingers in the bones.

A must-have for fans of Gill’s previous work and anyone who’s ever looked to the stars—or within—for meaning.

Nikita Gill’s verse is magical and engaging. She brings this to the story of Hekate, Goddes of witchcraft and necromancy. This was a pleasure to read and pairs beautifully with other novels of this genre. Highly engaging as a novel in verse for students who are not readers.
