The premise of this speculative historical fiction is fascinating. I enjoyed the characters Keizo, Yagi and Noriko and their stories. This book is very strongly researched and heavy with details. At times, this depth of research read like a textbook and I felt it was very slow to read. I feel this book will find its niche reader base for those who enjoy a well researched unique experience.

Daikon drops you into the chaos of WWII Japan, with a chilling twist: the Japanese military gets its hands on a third American atomic bomb. At the heart of the story is a physicist racing to save his imprisoned wife, forced to unravel the bomb’s secrets after their daughter’s death.
Hawley’s background as a historian makes the setting vivid and real. The writing is tight and suspenseful, full of emotion and tough choices. Some side characters could use more depth, but the main story packs a punch.
This is a fast-paced, moving read about love, loss, and impossible decisions in wartime.
