I wasn't expecting that!

Suffer is a gritty and in-your-face thriller. It does not hold back on the gore and blood, and covers topics that include rape, torture and murder. It adds in the horrific element of what happens when this occurs to children - so is definitely not for those who have sensitivities around that.

The content is graphic, yes, but it's not outside the realms of normal for a crime/thriller story. Perhaps the newer edits have cut some of the issues other reviewers have mentioned; I did not find it too graphic, nor too disturbing.

The writing read well, and the pace seemed almost spot on (just a little slow in the middle). I'd have liked a little more foreshadowing of who the bad guy was, because it felt a little convenient even though the tie-in was reasonably set up, it just felt a little too easy.

Now let's turn to Grey and Kate... our two main characters. For the most part, I liked them, even the whole 'Kate is a darker version of herself after what happened'. Although I did start to feel like they were a bit too determined and a bit too focused. Where's the emotional breakdowns? They felt a little inhuman at times.

What didn't work for me was the attempt at a romance sub-plot between two characters. It stuck out like a sore thumb and was seriously not needed to make the story more appealing.

Stick to one genre or tie the romance in with a bigger part - it was superfluous as it currently reads.

Overall though, I enjoyed reading this graphic tale, especially because E.E. Borton did not shy away from exploring the darker side of things.

No.

Really, just no.

This is some weird mix of romantic suspense (or really some older guy's age gap erotic fantasy) with overly graphic descriptions of rape and torture, and a really horrifying child death.

And the romantic suspense bit just seems clunky and weird in the middle of all the death and torture. Like, whoa they removed someones eyeball and dang you look good in a bikini.

As for the ending - again with the no. It's way over the top, unbelievable, and some parts are just...wrong.

A skip for me.
