This book is gorgeous and engaging enough that I immediately went and grabbed the ARC for Volume 2.

This isn't quite five stars for me because it ended on a cliffhanger that would have made me pretty upset about waiting for Volume 2.

There are also a few too many characters for some of them to get proper story time, even in a relatively large volume, and a lot of politics that I only just feel like I'm beginning to understand. If I were coming here from the webcomic, maybe that would be different, but I'm not and a lot of the folks who pick this up when it launches won't be either.

ARC provided by Netgalley.

"It’s okay if you like.. plants"

I didn't know how much I needed this story until I got my little goblin hands on it. I devoured this volume like it was my job. This was a webtoon I had skipped over reading in the webtoon app and feel awfully stupid now for doing so. The artwork is stunning, from the actual character art to the color pallet and the scenery, it all draws you in and sets the mood.

Camille is a young witch who lives with her aunt and her cousin after losing her twin sister and her mother in a fire when she was very young. Before the fire she had lost her father in an accident. Shes been repressing her true self ever since the fire. She feels as if who she is and what she can do is never going to be good enough for her aunt and the rest of her family.

A series of events leads her in to discovering the truth about herself, her family, and the world of witches that she thought she knew, but is learning she knows very little about.

As Camille discovers herself, her heart, her family things start to take a turn for the better, and somewhat more chaotic.

This is a world of witches, familiars, demons and more. There is so much love, diverse representation and acceptance.

I'm rooting for Camille to find her path in this magical wonderful witchy world. The Cliff hanger has me hanging on and reaching for volume two!

Muted: Volume One totally surprised me—in the best way. It’s got this dark, magical vibe set in New Orleans, and the main character, Camille, is super easy to root for. The whole thing kicks off with a summoning ritual gone wrong, and from there, it just keeps pulling you in deeper.
The art is seriously stunning. The colors, the character expressions—everything just works. It’s one of those graphic novels where you want to linger on every page. And the story has heart, too. It touches on family, identity, and figuring out who you are without getting overly heavy.
If you’re into witches, secrets, and beautiful storytelling, this one’s definitely worth a read. Can’t wait for volume two. out. Can’t wait for more! 4.5 stars rounded up to 5!

I originally read this on Webtoon a few years ago. I was so excited when I heard it was getting a physical release. It was really great to see how the panels were adapted to fill a page. It would be difficult to tell that it was originally published in a scrolling format.

The first volume reminded me just how strong of an opening this story has. It really draws you in with the atmosphere. The art definitely makes the book, each panel looks so polished but dynamic.

I’m really excited to dive into the next volume!

I had a great time reading this book. The art style was gorgeous with great colors. The first volume was really interesting, with great lore, great characters. The sapphic romance will be interesting as well as the development of Camille.
Can't wait for the second volume

Muted reads like an original fairytale, carrying an immersive sense of magic that flows through every page and illustration. Mundt’s art possesses the lush, atmospheric intensity of some of my favorite graphic novel illustrations, calling to mind the intense, dark art of Molly Knox Ostertag’s The Witch Boy, and with all of the complex characters. Camille is a truly wonderful protagonist who I couldn’t help but root for—her genuine heart and desire to find somewhere she belongs made me immediately like her, and she propels this story forward. She’s often flawed and confused, but that makes her even better, making her someone I don’t just want to succeed, but can empathize with myself. I also love this entire world, augmented by the illustrations—it feels so close to ours and yet utterly more magical. This series is definitely one I’ll want to be keeping an eye on!

Muted follows Camille, who is still grieving the loss of her mother and twin sister. The last thing Camille wants to do is return to her old home deep in the swamps of Louisiana. When the time comes for Camille to perform the demon-summoning blood ritual that every prospective matriarch in her family must complete, she is afraid of making a mistake. No matter how hard she tries to be a witch worthy of the Severin name, nothing is ever good enough for her aunt. Camille has practiced and practiced, but instead of the beat of demonic wings or the snap of talons, her blood calls forth evergreen vines and leaves. Terrified of what this might mean, she flees into the swamps. But her failed ritual gives her something precious: time away from Aunt Athalie. Time to spend with her beloved familiar Toben and kindly cousin Silvia. This series tackles some dark themes within the first few chapters, and it felt like more time could have been given to process them. In the end, I couldn't vibe with this series, but I would recommend checking it out if you are already a fan or the synopsis speaks to you.

Synopsis: When Camille performs her demon-summoning ritual, there are just vines and plants obeying her witchcraft. She flees into the swamps of Louisiana and is left behind at the Severin's family mansion by her stern aunt Athalie and sweet cousin. Now reunited with her bird Toben, is when she discovers more about her lost family and her magic behaving strangely.

Miranda Mundt first had this story up as a #webtoon webcomic but now it will be released in print and boy am I glad: this graphic novel enveloppe the first 27 episodes of the series. The next graphic novel will be published in October and honestly, I can't wait to read more about Camille's journey in this coming-of-age fantasy.
I saw the cover and immediately hit the request button on #netgalley (thank you for this #ARC!). The colours pop and the drawings are so appealing: Mundt's style is so cool!

I was amazed by the art, locked in by the plot and generally loved the whole package. This is a ☆☆☆☆☆/5 for me! Hope it will entertain you as much as me and join the #muted -loving community!

I am so excited to see more diverse web comics getting the traditional publishing treatment! Muted follows Camille, a witch of the prominent Severin coven who struggles to find her place in the world. She and her cousin, Avaline, have lived under Matriarch Athalie's abusive control their whole lives after the death of the previous Matriarch, Camille's mother, along with the rest of her family in a tragic fire. So when Camille fails the summoning ritual meant to secure her place among the Severins, she feels completely lost. Soon, Camille begins to unravel the secrets of her family and magic, and revelations come to light that threaten to destroy everything she thought she knew...but also perhaps bring her closer to blooming into her truest self. Muted has plenty of LGBTQIA+ representation, but the primary romantic relationship is polyamorous AND sapphic. Prominent secondary characters give us asexual and transgender representation as well. New Orleans and the NOLA region serve as the primary setting, and racial diversity is plentiful in the cast.

I am a huge advocate for including content and trigger warnings at the beginning of a work, and Miranda Mundt includes a page at the beginning to address the overarching themes that may trigger readers. However, I wish volume 1 would include a more in-depth list of trigger warnings: fire, parent and sibling death (flashback), blood depiction, PTSD, depression, suicidal thoughts, scars (burns, cuts), anxiety and panic attacks, alcohol consumption and abuse, abandonment...and that's just the first volume. Considering how much darker the story gets in later chapters, I strongly suggest a more comprehensive list going forward. Still, it's better than nothing.

Now, regarding the adaptation! I have noticed that formatting these webtoons for printing can occur with varying levels of effort; I'm pleased to say that Ten Speed did an excellent job with the transition from a vertical scrolling style to the more typical layouts of graphic novels. Indeed, some images are seen even more fully on the page without the horizontal margin limitations! Volume 1 covers chapters 1 - 27 of the original webtoon, condensed down to 7 seven chapters plus the bonus mini episode. The illustrations for each chapter title page are brand new and gorgeous to look at, and some panels look like Mundt went back and either polished or re-drew them to better fit the new layout, which is incredible. I don't have much of an opinion on where the story cuts off; it's certainly a cliffhanger, but since I read the entire work back when it was first releasing weekly on the Webtoon app I won't be experiencing the story for the first time.

All in all, this is one of the better web comic adaptations I've seen thus far, and I plan to purchase each volume for myself. Not only to support the author, but to collect a well-told story that breaks the conventions of the cookie-cutter books major publishers have been lazily pushing out for several years.

A fun coming of age story about witchcraft and friendship and the dark mysteries of the past. Camille's family is holding more secrets than she knows, and some of them involve her. When her magic doesn't work the way it is supposed to, when her summoning ritual starts to go wrong, she has to figure out why, and in the process begins to learn that it's ok to be different and unique. The important thing is to accept all of the different versions and aspects of oneself in order to truly blossom into your true self. Also there is a mysterious demon after her. What will she do?

A gorgeous, heavily captivating witch story! Set in beautiful Louisiana, this story was so fascinating. Camille is the odd one out in her family, though her overbearing and sometimes downright cruel Aunt doesn't help. Camille tries to perform the demon-summoning ritual that every Severin woman must perform, but it all goes wrong in the worst ways. Camille flees to the swamps, and it all goes downhill from there. The art is honestly very unique, and I love how it looks.

I liked the story. It was definitely cute and made me interested in the next part. However, the real reason I’m giving this 5 stars is because I just love the artwork so much. There were so many spreads in this book that I just stopped and stared at for extended periods because I just loved the way the artist chose to convey a particular scene. Beautiful, vibrant, and witchy. Will 100% continue with this story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an earc of this book so that I could read and review it.

⚝ Rating ⚝: 4.5✩ / 5✩’s (rounded up)

⚝ Review ⚝: I am going to start by saying I enjoyed this story so much I immediately hopped online and pre-ordered a physical copy to put on my shelves. Muted was BEAUTIFULLY done. The story follows Camile who, after the loss of her mother and twin sister at 8-years-old, has been raised by her authoritarian aunt, the current Matriarch of their coven. Camile has always known she was different, but never knew how or why. After failing a ritual that she has trained for her whole life, Camile is now staying with Silvia to prepare to attempt the ritual again. But living in the place where her mother and sister died years ago is starting to bring memories and truths to the surface that no one is prepared to face.

Every character was fantastic in their roll. I adored the relationship between Camile and her cousin, Avaline as well as the way the relationship between the witches and their familiars were portrayed (I would honestly die for Toben). The story flowed well and the pacing between chapters was smooth and easy to follow. I loved Nyra and every time she called Camile 'Princess', I melted a little bit.

⚝ Illustrations⚝: Stunning, beautiful, I loved every panel! All the characters were so visually unique and the movement between panels was engaging.

⚝ Representation ⚝: Lesbian FMC, Queer SC, Many POC characters, SC utilizes Wheelchair.

⚝ TWs ⚝: Physical and Emotional abuse, Self Harm, Death of Parent, Death of Sibling, Blood, Classism

My monthly reading breakdown for April will be posted to TikTok, IG, and Threads the first week of May.
